St. James
Menomonee Falls, WI
From The Servant’s Quarters
The people who walked in darkness have seen a
great light! This is the day the Lord has made!
Let us be glad and rejoice in it! Merry Christmas
to you! We extend a special welcome to all of our
guests and visitors: relatives and friends of our
parishioners, to students home for the holidays, to
all who have come to St. James from near and far.
If you are new to our faith community, be sure to
read our bulletin, cover to cover! And visit the parish
web site. You will discover many different ways
to participate in the life of our parish. We even
have links to video recordings of our liturgies and
special events, thanks to the dedication of one of
our members, Andy Pomeroy.
A child is born to us, a son is given us! His dominion
is vast and forever peaceful! Who would have
thought that the Almighty, the Lord of the entire
universe would wrap himself up in swaddling
clothes after being born in a
manger! Ever since His birth
at Bethlehem, nothing truly
human can separate us
from the love
of God. As we
experience the
challenges, the
joys, and the
many different
feelings that are a part of our human condition, we
can take heart. The Lord Jesus knows them all,
from the inside out. Even though Jesus the Christ
is also God, that did not give him “an edge” on us in
coping with his humanity. Come, let us adore!
Because Christmas falls on a Sunday, we “lose” the opportunity
to celebrate the Feast of the Holy Family
and the Baptism of the Lord, on the weekend.
The Holy Family feast is moved to Friday, December
30 th . Maybe you can find a way to celebrate
this in your homes.
The feast of the Baptism of the Lord is scheduled this
year for January 9 th , a Monday. That also happens
to be the beginning of the national Vocation
Awareness Week. So we plan that to be the special
focus of the GIFT program that week. We’ll be
hearing from Deacon Mike Rooney and his wife
Betty about the diaconate ministry. Nate and
Heidi Lasnoski will speak of the vocation of marriage.
And I’ll lead a discussion on religious life and
priesthood. Even if you are not registered for the
GIFT program, you are welcome to join us for the
adult presentation portion that begins at 12:15pm
on Sunday, January 8 th , and 6:15pm Tuesday, January,
10 th .
In the name of our entire community of faith, I’d like
to express our gratitude to all who helped to make
our Christmas celebrations and worship environment
so beautiful and inspiring. What a great way
to “ring out the old…and welcome the New Year.”
A woman went to the post office to buy stamps for
her Christmas cards. “What denomination?” asked
the clerk. “Oh good heavens! Have we come to
this?”Said the woman. “Well, give me 30 Catholic
ones, 10 Baptist ones, 20 Lutheran and 40 Presbyterians.”
Christmas Giving Tree
Thank You! Thank You! St. James is a caring and giving
community, as was evidenced by the outpouring of support
for our Christmas Giving Tree. Your donations included over
$5,500 in gift cards and an abundance of games, toys,
clothing and other items. All of these gifts are sincerely
appreciated by our sponsored organizations, Interfaith, Milwaukee
Center for Independence, Sussex Outreach Services,
Hebron House and the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
These gifts will certainly touch many individuals and families.
Merry Christmas!
St. James Human Concerns Committee
THAT MAN IS YOU!
Men - Christmas will soon be a memory and everyone will
turn their thoughts to their New Year’s resolutions like: stop
smoking, drink less, loose weight, start working out, read
more, watch less TV or something to improve oneself. But
what about your spiritual nature? Why not strengthen your
faith and your relationship with God by attending THAT MAN
IS YOU! - a biblically based leadership development program
for men. This program stresses clarity of thought and integrity
of action. How clear have your thoughts been lately? And
what about the integrity of your actions? - does this program
sound like it was designed for you? The program is meant to
help all men become better husbands, fathers, brothers,
neighbors and leaders within our community.
The program will resume on Wednesday, January 25 th at 5:30
(that’s right 5:30 a.m.) and will end at 7:00 a.m. It will again be
held at St. Mary’s parish in Menomonee Falls and will start
with a continental breakfast and networking, followed by a
DVD presentation based on biblical principles, then men
break into small groups for discussion and it will end with a
closing prayer, energizing men to face the challenges of their
day. Last fall over 50 men attended from the cluster of: St.
Mary’s, Good Shepard and St. James. Make this year’s New
Year’s resolution to improve yourself by getting up early on
Wednesday, January 25th and attending – THAT MAN IS
YOU! All are welcome and YOU are invited. For further information
CHRISTMAS TREE TRADITION HAS ANCIENT ORIGINS -
King Tut never saw a Christmas tree, but he would have understood
the tradition which traces back long before the first
Christmas. The Egyptians were part of a long line of cultures
that treasured and worshipped evergreens. When the winter
solstice would arrive, they brought green date palm leaves
into their homes to symbolize life's triumph over death. The
Romans celebrated the winter solstice with a fest called Saturnalia
in honor of Saturnus, the god of agriculture. They
decorated their houses with greens and lights and exchanged
gifts. They gave coins for prosperity, pastries for happiness,
and lamps to light one's journey through life. Centuries ago in
Great Britain, woods priests called Druids used evergreens
during mysterious winter solstice rituals. The Druids used
holly and mistletoe as symbols of eternal life, and place evergreen
branches over doors to keep away evil spirits. Late in
the Middle Ages, Germans and Scandinavians placed evergreen
trees inside their homes or just outside their doors to
show their hope in the forthcoming spring. Our modern Christmas
tree evolved from these early traditions. Legend has it
that Martin Luther began the tradition of decorating trees to
celebrate Christmas. One crisp Christmas Eve, about the year
1500, he was walking through snow-covered woods and was
struck by the beauty of a group of small evergreens. Their
branches, dusted with snow, shimmered in the moonlight.
When he got home, he set up a little fir tree indoors so he
could share this story with his children. He decorated it with
candles, which he lighted in honor of Christ's birth. There is
more to the tradition, but we don’t have the space to detail it
here. We just want people to be good stewards of the earth.
Merry Christmas from the Field of Dreams Garden
Volunteers.
THANK YOU!
I would like to thank my Christmas committee, Confirmation
Students, and everyone who helped prepare and decorate
the Church for Christmas. I would also like to thank Karl from
Shady Lane Nursery and Chad Johnson from Johnson’s
Nursery for the beautiful poinsettias. Please sponsor these
two nurseries. Again, thank you for helping to make our
Church environment a wonderful place to come worship for
Christmas. Cookie Helman
