From The Servant’s Quarters
• Welcome to December! Welcome to Advent!
Welcome to “the most wonderful time
of the year!” You may not feel this way as you
read the Scriptures given us for these early
Advent days. They can be a bit scary and terrifying!
Why such “heavy” readings at the
outset of this holyday/holiday season?
• From our Christian point of view we are
living during the “in-between” times. Jesus
was born, lived, taught, died, and rose over
two thousand years ago. When he returned to
the Father in heaven, he quoted General Mac-
Arthur, “I shall return!” In the mean time he
entrusted us with the task to continue his
work – bringing healing, reconciliation, and
wholeness to our fragmented world. The
Spirit of Jesus working through us continues
to establish the original Divine Plan for this
world.
• These first weeks of Advent we are reminded
to be “sober and alert, ready and
watchful.” We recall the many people and
events that led up to the first coming of
Christ to help us ready the way for His return.
Closer to December 25 th we shift gears
to focus more on the miracle and joy that
comes with The Divine wrapping Himself up in
the swaddling clothes of our human condition.
• And so, for starters, let’s embrace the
call to prayer and to outreach to those less
fortunate than our selves. Through works of
charity we allow the Lord to make of us a fit
place in which He can dwell more deeply. The
Advent clarion call is, Maranatha! Come Lord
Jesus!!
• We are very grateful to all who organized
our annual “Holly Days.” What a great way to
have a foretaste of Christmas joy. I hope
everyone has a chance to experience some
part of this parish event.
• Be sure to hang up your stockings
Wednesday evening. Thursday is the celebration
of St. Nicholas. This bishop from the 4 th
century is a great model for outreach to the
needy and oppressed.
• For Father Nicholas's 60th birthday, the
congregation at St Mary's, Newark, England,
decided to give him a present of a new suit.
Father Nicholas was so moved by the gift that the
following Sunday he stood before everyone and began
his homily with a tear in his eye, 'Today I am
preaching to you in my birthday suit.'
ADVENT WREATH
The custom of the Advent wreath dates back to
the folk practices of people in early cultures who
gathered evergreen wreaths and lighted fires as
signs of hope in a coming spring and renewed
light. In ancient Rome, people decorated houses
and public buildings with evergreen wreaths and garland to welcome
a New Year.
Christians continued to practice these traditions and by the 16th
century, Catholics and Protestants throughout eastern Europe
used these symbols to celebrate their Advent hope in Christ.
The use of the Advent wreath spread to other parts of the Christian
world.
LOST & FOUND
PLEASE take a minute to check the lost and found if you
think you’ve left something behind here at Church. There
are eyeglasses, earrings, keys, baseball caps, baby cups and
even a shoe! The lost and found is underneath in the white
cabinet outside of the Great Room, opposite the Food Pantry
Cupboard.
The family of John Bohdalik wishes to extend our deepest gratitude
to everyone who helped by gifts of time, food, money donations, or
love and prayers during his illness and afterwards for his funeral.
No words can ever express what this means to us. Our deepest
thank you also goes to ALL the St. James’ Staff members, for how
they reached out to John when he was not able to work and during
the time he was in hospice care.
For Funeral Visitation, Mass, and luncheon, thank you to Fr. Mike,
Daryl, Deacon Bob, Deacon Mike, Andy Pomeroy, the Choir and
Barb, the Bereavement Committee, the Funeral Luncheon Committee
and Dave and Mark Kenney for the music during the luncheon.
For all friends who helped during and after, in any large or small
way, your kindness was overwhelming.
For those who so generously donated to the two special memorials
John himself requested, $1,000 was given to St. James and $550 was
given to the Leukemia-Lymphoma Society. There were several
other charities to which donations were made as well, so thank you
all for the gifts that were given.
God Bless you all for your love and prayers,
Fields of Hope and Dreams Community Garden
Advent Conspiracy: Spending Less = Giving More. In 2007 a small movement was started by three churches – The
Crossing in St. Louis, Imago Dei in Portland and Ecclesia in Houston. The movement is called Advent Conspiracy http://
www.adventconspiracy.org and it’s now worldwide. Its three main goals: 1) Reduce unnecessary stress, debt and the hyper
commercialism of Christmas, 2) Invite “presence” of relationships and reflection about what we are truly celebrating and
3) Work towards wiping out the number one killer on this planet, lack of clean water. (Remember last year’s draught, or St.
James’ well problems? Our community gardeners were trying to water every day). Here are some statistics to consider:
1) $450 billion is spent in this country during the month of December. Much of it is holiday shopping. 2) At any given time,
half of the world’s hospital beds are occupied by patients suffering from a water related disease. 3) 2.2 million people die
every year due to lack of access to clean drinking water. 4) According to the World Bank and United Nations Development
Program, it’s estimated that it would cost $20 billion to solve the global water crisis (i.e. less than 5% of what’s spent in this
country in December). Advent Conspiracy’s four tenets are: 1) Worship Fully: It’s not just going to church; it’s also donating
time, resources and giving of oneself to others. (Catholics call it: time, talent, treasure) Love wins, peace reigns and life
is celebrated. 2) Spend Less: Consider buying one less gift this Christmas. Be more available to people and suffer less
post holiday aftermath (i.e. debt, regret, stress). 3) Give More: Time is the real gift Christmas offers. Be more present to
others this holiday season. 4) Love All: By spending less at Christmas everyone has the opportunity to give to those who
need help the most. Love without borders or boundaries – locally; think of the “Giving Tree” in the gathering space, our
CCOS food pantry and the St. Ben’s meal program. Nationally and internationally, think of Catholic Charities or Living Water
International, http://water.cc. If it’s too late to change this Christmas, start the conversation so you can change next year.
And, if you want to join our garden volunteers: call (414) 587-1202 or email pschneider@wi.rr.com
Christian Family Movement (CFM)
Looking for stimulating discussion, faith-based action, and socializing
in the new year? Christian Family Movement (CFM) is
beginning here at St. James. Individuals and couples are invited
to join! CFM provides a time and place for adult parishioners to
share values, faith, and a place to experience Jesus in their lives
and the lives of their families. CFM is a way of life that develops
everyday Christians. Its goal is to bring people together to
form a faith-filled Christian community guided by love of family,
love of Church and service to others. The format consists of
meeting together monthly in small groups in the homes of parishioners
for scripture reflection, discussion, calls to action, and
socializing. Discussions are based on national CFM materials.
If you are interested in being a part of CFM in 2013, please contact
Peg Flahive in the Christian Formation Office, flahivep@archmil.org
or 262-253-2915. We hope you will consider
joining!
Aluminum Can Drive –
The Aluminum Can Drive is taking place THIS
WEEKEND, December 1st & 2nd. As many of
you know, the Aluminum Can Drives are a fundraiser
for the Mission Trip that takes place in the
summer. The drives are usually held on the 1 st
weekend of the “even” months which means if you
miss this one, the truck will be back in February. ALL proceeds
go towards Mission Trip expenses and scholarship money for Mission
Trip. Please drop cans off in the back of the Maurice Landscaping
truck which will be here some time Saturday morning. To
ensure we receive maximum money for our cans please take them
out of plastic bags. The aluminum cans will be taken to the recycling
center early Monday morning. As always, we ask that you
not drop off cans early or after the truck has been moved as we
have no place to store them. The Mission Trippers thank you in
advance for your support.
Adult Confirmation
If you are a Baptized Catholic who celebrated your First
Communion but not the Sacrament of Confirmation, please
consider attending classes beginning with an orientation
session on either Sunday, January 13 at St. Mary Parish in
Menomonee Falls (11:30 AM-1:00 PM), OR Wednesday,
January 16 at Good Shepherd Parish in Menomonee Falls
(7:00 – 8:30 PM). Adult Confirmation classes are a collaborative
effort of five local parishes. In 2013 St. James will not
be a host site, but you are asked to attend classes at either
of the two parishes listed above. Participants have the option
of attending either the Sunday morning or Wednesday
evening classes as your schedule allows. Staff members
and volunteers from St. James, St. Agnes, St. Mary, St. Anthony
and Good Shepherd help with the classes. To register
or for more information and a schedule of classes, please
contact Peg Flahive, 262-253-2915 or flahivep@archmil.org.
Feast of St. Nicholas, Advent and
Christmas Gift Ideas
Did you know the Christian Formation Office has three
different Bibles available for purchase? Bibles
make a great Christmas gift for the entire
family. A hardcover “Beginner’s Bible” for
children Pre-K through Grade 2 is available
for $10. A paperback “Catholic Youth Bible”
is available for $20. The (paperback)
“Catholic Faith and Family Bible” is available for $20.
Families might also want to visit a Catholic religious goods
store for additional faith-based gifts. I have found that
stores like Stemper’s in Milwaukee or the Gift Store at the
Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians
(Holy Hill) in Hubertus have a wide variety of religious
books, art and artifacts, Advent wreaths, religious Christmas
cards and items for children and youth. More information
can be found at www.stempers.com and http://
giftstore.holyhill.com. Other great family resources for Advent
and Christmas are available at http://
www.loyolapress.com and http://
catalog.franciscanmedia.org (formerly St. Anthony Messenger
Press). ~ Peg Flahive, Adult and Family Ministry
