Soldier ‘B’<br />

Soldier ‘B’ was also interviewed by Sergeant J Robinson <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RMP on<br />

September 16, 1971 and a witness statement was obtained. (This soldier<br />

has also been interviewed by <strong>the</strong> <strong>HET</strong> as part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> review process. His<br />

present-day recollections are documented later in this report). His initial<br />

account is summarised as follows:<br />

He said that about 12.45am on September 15, 1971 he was on duty in<br />

Observation Post 10, Blighs Lane Camp, Londonderry in company with<br />

soldier ‘A’.<br />

During that evening approximately 150 local residents had started to<br />

build a barricade across Eastway. This number later reduced to between<br />

10 and 15.<br />

He recalls soldier ‘A’ stating he had seen someone at <strong>the</strong> junction <strong>of</strong><br />

Eastway and Lonemoor Road pointing a rifle at <strong>the</strong>ir observation post.<br />

Just as soldier ‘A’ said this, he fired one round from his 7.62mm rifle.<br />

Soldier ‘B’ <strong>the</strong>n said that he looked in <strong>the</strong> direction <strong>of</strong> Eastway /<br />

Lonemoor Road and saw two men dragging someone /something from<br />

behind a small wall towards a nearby building.<br />

He added that <strong>the</strong> area was well lit and he had a clear view. He did not<br />

see anyone with a rifle.<br />

Michael Martin CAMPBELL<br />

Detective Sergeant Ruddell <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> RUC interviewed Michael Campbell on<br />

September 16, 1971.<br />

Mr Campbell said that about 12.15am on September 15, 1971 he left his<br />

home address at 52a, Westland Street, Londonderry with his friend Mark<br />

McLaughlin. It was <strong>the</strong>ir intention to walk to some shop premises at<br />

<strong>William</strong> Street to check that all was in order.<br />

He checked <strong>the</strong> shop premises at 12.30am and at <strong>the</strong> suggestion <strong>of</strong> Mr<br />

McLaughlin decided to walk home via Lonemoor Road. On route <strong>the</strong>y met<br />
