Our company is rooted in the industrial 

revolution of Northern Europe. Our history 

can be traced back to 1841 when a small 

workshop was set up on the banks of the 

Aker river in Oslo, Norway. Mechanical and 

marine engineering soon became the core 

of our business. 

In the 1960s oil companies discovered 

oil and gas in the North Sea. Our engineers 

shifted focus and soon became pioneers 

in the development of this region, which 

still holds the position as the biggest 

single market for the offshore oil and 

gas industry. 

We are building our future on this heritage, 

but also on the capabilities and resources 

of the many people and companies who 

have since become part of Aker Solutions. 

Today we are present in 30 countries on 

every continent. We are approximately 

18.000 people who all share the same 

values.

In 1985 one of our engineers 

made a quick sketch on 

a napkin. At the time the 

technology didn’t exist. 

This is ingenuity delivered 

Today that idea is reality. The 

ground breaking subsea gas 

compression system is a world 

first and a technological leap. 

Aker Solutions brings together engineering, 

technologies and services for oil and gas 

drilling, field development and production. 

We apply our knowledge to deliver 

better solutions. Our expertise is the 

result of our long track record in the 

industry, our involvement with a wide 

range of ambitious and professional 

customers and the challenges that we 

have faced and solved together. 

In the 1960s, our first involvement in the 

oil and gas industry was to convert and 

prepare existing offshore units for the 

harsh and difficult conditions in the North 

Sea. Shortly after we started developing 

our own solutions. The Aker H-3 drilling 

rig was one of the first. Forty years and 

[37] units later, it is still one of the most 

celebrated rig concepts in the industry. 

We have created new technology ever 

since. Faced with the challenges of the 

North Sea, the oil industry had to come 

up with good, safe and reliable solutions 

for the development and operation of 

deepwater fields and difficult reservoirs. 

Aker Solutions and other players in 

that region became pioneers in subsea 

field development, floating production 

concepts, horizontal wells and increased 

oil recovery. 

In 1985 an Aker Solutions engineer 

came up with the idea of moving gas 

compression equipment from the topside 

and place it at the bottom of the sea. 

The subsea gas compression solution 

produces pressure which allows the 

hydrocarbons to travel up the pipelines to 

a platform or receiving terminal onshore. 

His visionary first idea first captured 

with a pencil on a thin sheet of paper is 

becoming a reality at a deepwater field in 

the Norwegian Sea. 

Our innovative solutions are both big 

and small. We developed the Pusnes 

safe chainstop for the safer anchoring 

of offshore units, combining the normal 

chainstopper function with a new safety 

device. This device will arrest a rendering 

chain, protecting the winch motor and 

equipment against damages during 

anchoring operations. A small device that 

can make a major difference. 

These are just a few examples of how 

we apply our knowledge and how new 

solutions become reality when we tackle 

challenges with competence.

From reservoir to production 

Our portfolio of oilfield products, 

systems and services stretches all 

the way from the reservoir to the 

wellstream processing systems that 

generate marketable and valuable 

hydrocarbon products. Our target 

is to deliver the best. Each product, 

system and service competes on 

a stand-alone basis in the market. 

But, with our broad portfolio and 

know-how, we understand the 

challenge and apply the knowledge 

to create the solutions. Here are 

some examples, from reservoir to 

production. 

1 Reservoir, geology 

Understanding what is in the reservoir 

and how it can be drained is the ultimate 

challenge for our customers. Finding a 

good solution starts with geo services, 

such as geological and geophysical 

interpretation, petro physics, reservoir 

modelling and simulation, production 

technology and operation, and well site 

geology. We are the largest petroleum 

sub-surface consultancy in Norway. 

2 Deepwater drilling 

Offshore drilling places enormous 

importance on efficient and reliable 

operations. The drilling equipment and 

systems we deliver are based on forty 

years extensive experience, with safety 

and drilling uptime as top priority. 

3 Drilling risers 

At water depths of up to 12,000 feet, 

connecting and disconnecting riser joints 

fast and safely saves time and improves 

safety. Aker Solutions’ CLIP riser is a 

significantly faster solution than traditional 

flanged riser connectors.

Many new fields typically have higher 

pressures and temperatures, and require 

longer step-outs. We provide complete 

subsea production systems and additional 

products such as work-over systems and 

processing and boosting technologies. 

Together they form a reliable solution to 

drain challenging deep-water reservoirs. 

Some reservoirs require gas compression 

to ensure optimal well stream and 

recovery. The world’s first subsea gas 

compression system is currently being 

built by Aker Solutions, replacing a 

traditional platform and instead placing the 

entire compression system on the seabed. 

5 Umbilicals 

Our umbilical and power cable systems 

enable safe and reliable control of 

subsea wells and the wellstream. We are 

the global market leader for steel tube 

umbilicals, which we have delivered to 

the world’s most challenging fields in 

deep and ultra-deep waters. 

6 Hydrate inhibition 

Avoiding the formation of ice and hydrates 

in the well stream is important to maintain 

the flow from reservoir to production 

facility. We combine flow assurance 

analyses, in-house umbilical and subsea 

equipment expertise, with a world-leading 

understanding of MEG (monoethylene 

glycol) regeneration and reclamation 

to provide a highly efficient, recyclable 

hydrate inhibition solution.

Subsea production systems 

Surface trees 

The majority of the world’s hydrocarbons 

continue to flow through wellheads on 

land and on platforms fixed to the seabed. 

Our special Splitter wellhead allows 

you to drill up to three wells from a 

single wellbore. 

8 Mooring equipment 

As the oil industry has moved offshore 

to ever more hostile environments, the 

secure mooring of vessels is crucial. Our 

mooring equipment includes Pusnes 

anchor windlasses and various winches, 

all designed to withstand and perform in 

all conditions, from hurricanes to -50˚c. 

9 Process systems technologies 

Efficient treatment of oil, gas, produced 

water and solids is key to value creation 

in the upstream business. Our specialised 

products, technologies and services cover 

design and engineering of new process 

systems as well as maintenance and 

modification of existing systems. 

10 Sulphate removal 

Injecting treated and de-sulphated 

seawater into the reservoir helps maintain 

pressure and control scaling and souring 

effects in the reservoir. The sulphate 

removal technology we provide delivers 

treated and de-sulphated seawater for 

injection into the reservoir, which provides 

cost savings and improves safety when 

handling wellstreams. 

11 Asset integrity management 

Making the most of your production assets 

requires just the right maintenance at just 

the right time. By applying knowledge and 

advanced technologies and methods, we 

provide optimised life-cycle maintenance 

that reduces inspection costs for offshore 

oil and gas operators. 

12 Well intervention 

Ensuring an unobstructed flow of 

hydrocarbons from the reservoir typically 

will require well intervention and a range 

of down hole services. Our wide range 

of offers includes slick line and wire line 

operations, wire line tractor and related 

applications as well as cased hole logging. 

Our new deepwater well intervention 

vessels offer a faster and more costefficient 

alternative to conventional 

well intervention by drilling rigs. 

13 Offshore loading systems 

Field development in arctic conditions 

requires special equipment such as 

offshore loading systems. Pusnes 

offshore bow loading systems are 

designed for high performance in 

extreme weather conditions.

message from the exploration drilling 

crew about a promising new discovery. 

Coming full circle the journey should 

take you back to the beginning, a clean 

and pristine seabed or field of land, 

which should bear little or no mark 

of industrial activity. 

The discovery moves from promising to 

proven reserves. The field develops with 

reliable and efficient production facilities. 

With our help you are able to safely 

operate, maintain and modify facilities to 

secure optimal depletion of the reservoir. 

And towards the end of field life, we help 

you carefully plug and abandon the wells, 

remove and recycle the installations. 

A successful development requires 

understanding of these different stages

better. The more flexible and versatile the 

development concept is, the easier it will

industry. At Aker Solutions we 

understand the need to secure a

best knowledge. Staying competitive 

has become a battle for talents and 

for access to new and emerging 

technologies. To win this battle we 

have developed and continue to 

develop valuable long term relations 

with leading universities and research 

institutions. We have also created 

an International Talent Programme 

and several local technical graduate 

programmes in key regions to capture 

young talents who can become 

prosperous individuals, driving our 

company forward. 

As the industry matures, the need for 

a new generation of technology and 

products is a necessary means to staying 

on top. The result is that we have to 

be part of the groundbreaking ideas of 

tomorrow, through collaboration with 

various educational institutions. 

Recently Aker Solutions signed a frame 

agreement with the leading engineering 

university in Norway, NTNU in Trondheim. 

Under this frame agreement we are 

currently running four PhD programmes. 

The knowledge based engineering 

(KBeDesign) programme focuses on 

improving quality and reducing cost and 

time. The PhD programme within tribology, 

is part of mechanical engineering, taking 

a closer look at the science of surfaces in 

motion, while the marine hydrodynamics 

PhD focuses on liquids in motion. The final 

PhD programme centres on multiphase 

boosting technology, a science that allows 

increased oil recovery from the reservoirs. 

Seeing people as part of the solution to 

meeting the technology of tomorrow, we 

started the International Talent Programme 

in 2006. The objective of the programme 

is to supply and develop talents to help 

expand our capabilities in winning and 

executing new business in growing 

markets. The talents spend two intensive 

years on three separate assignments 

within the company. They are mentored 

throughout the process in order to best 

support their abilities. Today 90% of 

the talents are full time employees in 

Aker Solutions, of which many hold key 

positions in our growth regions. 

Once we hire an employee, there are 

multiple ways of growing within our global 

company. Our internal academy, called 

Aker Academy, helps Aker Solutions 

employees to grow and develop. It is a 

virtual entity in which programmes and 

activities are built around developing core 

competencies, developing leaders and

With safety and care 

Having an HSE mindset is one of 

Aker Solutions’ core values. This 

stretches beyond caring for our people. 

The results can also be seen in the 

technologies and products we develop. 

One example is the most advanced 

3D simulators in the industry, which 

enable us and our customers to 

educate and train rig personnel in safe 

environments onshore. By reducing the 

need to travel offshore and allowing 

crew to practice for as long they want to, 

without concern for rig downtime, 

the simulators increase safety. 

Our groundbreaking 3D technology also 

makes it possible to monitor how drilling 

systems work on board the rig. As a result, 

we can record and analyse every detail of 

the drilling process in order to find more 

efficient solutions. 

Before a big upgrade of drilling equipment 

and control systems, the entire operation 

is thoroughly and virtually tested. This 

increases predictability and lowers the 

risk of the operation. In addition, the 

commissioning time may be cut by 

several weeks of rig time, generating 

major cost savings. 

We offer real-time technical support 

and troubleshooting, significantly 

reducing response time. Through our 

service centres onshore, our skilled and 

experienced teams stay online to assist 

rigs anywhere in the world, at any time. 

Often, the time previously spent getting 

people offshore and on site can now be 

spent optimising rig performance and 

solving problems - even on several rigs 

at the same time.

possible to monitor how 

drilling systems work on 

board the rig 

Safety in design 

We have more than 40 years experience 

within the design of floating facilities. 

This includes some of the world’s most 

advanced semi-submersible drilling 

and production platforms, tension leg 

platforms and FPSOs (floating production 

storage and offloading vessels). 

Throughout the development of these 

facilities, HSE is incorporated in the design 

itself. All our products are designed to 

minimise risk. One example is how we 

have developed ever safer designs for 

platform and vessel hulls. 

Today, all hull penetrations have been 

eliminated. That means there are no sea 

chests or through-hull connections, and 

that all ballast water only flows in or out 

through external column top manifolds. 

We design our facilities to eliminate the 

possibility of inadvertent flooding of 

hulls during hurricane abandonment, an 

important feature in offshore locations. 

We have also developed a design that 

reduces bulkhead penetrations between 

hull quadrants, which prevents ballast 

water spreading. 

These are the types of design 

improvements that have created safer 

installations and facilities. The same 

thinking goes into the design of platform 

topsides, subsea products, process 

systems modules and all the other 

products and systems we deliver.
