How To Choose the Right Superyacht Chiller
MTD Series
A reliable and ample air conditioning system is essential in any
superyacht design. No matter how elegant the surroundings,
they won’t feel luxurious if the temperature of the living area is
less than comfortable. Not only will the right air conditioning
system provide a pleasant voyage for passengers and crew,
but it will also maintain the required temperature range for the
operation of critical electronic equipment.
It is wise, therefore, to engineer the air conditioning system for
the unique characteristics of each yacht, and address climate
control with as much attention and expertise as you give to the
design of the vessel itself.
Assessing real-world air conditioning requirements takes
experience and specialized knowledge, so look to Dometic
Marine for the resources and expertise you need. Our senior
engineers can design your yacht’s air conditioning system or
review your design and specifications to make sure everything
is correct.
The Three Biggest Challenges When Choosing the Right
Manufacturer
Challenge #1: Engineering Support
Trust Dometic’s expert engineering team to review your
drawings and specifications to ensure all measurements
and load calculations are correct. Or, we can layout your
entire system, size all the appropriate capacities, and design
the most suitable system for your vessel. Dometic can also
supervise the installation of your air conditioning system and
provide on-site training and complete documentation to your
crew.
Challenge #2: Broadest Selection
Dometic provides the world’s broadest range of chilled water
systems, including air handlers and controls. Our chillers
provide up to 2.88 million BTUs of cooling or heating and come
in a variety of configurations, with custom designs available.
Dometic air handlers feature WhisperCool technology and are
available in unique vertical and horizontal configurations that
maximize space utilization. Network-capable controls can be
incorporated into most ship-automation solutions.
With 50 years of experience, Dometic has provided the most
proven, innovatively engineered marine air conditioning
systems in the world.
We understand the three biggest challenges faced by naval
architects, ship builders, and owners when choosing the right
company for their air conditioning equipment: Engineering
support, broad selection, and global service.
Challenge #3: Global Service
Monitoring and control of the chiller and
individual air handlers (with optional CAN
bus adapter) over the internet is possible
with the ethernet capability of the on-board
Chiller Gateway Network Interface (pg. 13).
A seawater-cooled chiller, installed in the engine room, cools or heats the ship's interior via a loop of chilled or heated fresh water. Along
the fresh-water loop are the air handlers, which blow cold or hot air, and also dehumidify the environment.
The air-cooled Radome ECU (pg. 17)
keeps critical navigation equipment
inside the radar dome running at
optimal temperatures.
Air handlers are designed to be installed in tight spaces such as walls, storage areas, and overhead spaces,
then ducted to the various cabins, corridors, and living areas. Fresh Air Makeup Units can be installed and
ducted to the return stream of air handlers to help improve air quality throughout the vessel's interior.
Cabin temperature, fan speed, and humidity levels are controlled and monitored by
sophisticated digital cabin controls. Chiller operation, water temperatures, faults, and
other information are monitored by the Tempered Water Logic Control (TWLC).
The optional Chiller Gateway Network
Interface (pg. 13) provides local or remote
control and monitoring of the chilled water
system. The Gateway is available with
graphical color touchscreen.
