MINI BACK IN WRC
The MINI John Cooper Works WRC by MINI’s official team for the FIA World Rally
Championship (WRC) was unveiled in its WRC colours — red, white and black — on
11 April in Oxford.
‘MINI is back in the world of rallying,’ said Dirk Hollweg, head of MINI
Motorsport. The last time MINI rallied was in the 1960s, where the classic
MINI Cooper S won countless victories. Now, MINI hopes to mark their return
with more of the same.
Team Principal David Richards said, ‘Everyone is now looking forward to
getting the WRC season started.’ That start will come on 5-8 May, when MINI
takes part in the Rally d’Italia Sardegna, held across the island of Sardinia.
Team drivers, Northern Irishman Kris Meeke, will run as number 37; and
Spaniard Dani Sordo will carry number 52. These are the same car numbers
used during MINI WRC Team’s back-to-back victories of the legendary Monte
Carlo Rally in 1964 and 1965.
