0:24 NEWS F1 FEVER IN THE HEART OF ORCHARD The month of April has proved to be a mouthwatering one for motor racing fans in Singapore, with the Red Bull Speed Street showcar event on 24th April taking the F1 fever into the heart of Singapore’s shopping high street, entertaining an audience 50000 strong that lined every single roadside spot and elevated surface along an 800m stretch of Orchard Road, closed for this event. The highlight of Speed Street was former Red Bull Racing driver David Coulthard’s performance with the RB7 F1 car, which swept last year’s Formula 1 driver and constructor championships. In addition to blazing fast sprints between ION Orchard/ Mariott Singapore and Buyong Road near the Istana, Coulthard also performed manoeuvres such as engine breaks, donuts, AVENUE FOR MOTORSPORTS ASPIRANTS Singapore is seeing the interest in motor sports evolving and reaching a new peak, driven by the highly successful Formula 1 races. With not every layman getting a chance to experience the motor sports event and much to the conjecture is often misconstrued, ITE College West has decided to set this right by teaming with Kartmaster to conduct a “Racing Team Technical Training Course” for ITE students. This course will help would-be motor sports aspirants to gain a foothold into this glamorous sport. The course will be conducted by a renowned instructor Mr. Roland Chong who has been involved in motor sports events for many years in the international arena. Being an official in Singapore Motor Sports Association (SMSA), Mr Chong has officiated in the Singapore’s Formula 1 event. The scope of this course will include classroom sessions, rules and regulations, driving theory and kart preparation before embarking on the practical aspect of the course. Those who make the grade will have a chance to experience the real thing. They also will learn about the race management. Outstanding students will be engaged by other teams in the Singapore Kart Championship (SKC) & Asia Kart Open Championship (AKOC) events. As Karting is often used as a foundation for motor sports activities with Formula 1 being the pinnacle, this locally trained pool of talents may one day become a “Team and burnouts, which are rarely seen, if ever, in Formula 1 races.
