ST. FABIAN CHURCH PAGE 4 FARMINGTON HILLS, MI R.C.I.A. Have you been considering becoming Catholic? Have you been wondering what the Church teaches and why? Have you felt the Holy Spirit nudging you to learn more? Were you baptized Catholic, but have been away from the church for some time and would like to come back? If so, we invite you to join our R.C.I.A. (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) group! We meet Sunday mornings, from 9:00am until 10:55am, beginning Sunday, September 22 nd and go through Easter. All materials are provided, and there is no cost to you, other than your time and enthusiasm. Our gatherings are informal and include prayer, discussion, Scripture, as well as other learning mediums. Our hope is to answer any questions you may have as honestly and as completely as we can. There is no obligation, so, if at any time you decide that this is not where God is calling you to be, you are free to leave with our blessings. If you decide you do want to become Catholic, we will prepare you to be brought into the Church at the Easter Vigil in April. If you have been baptized in another Christian faith, we will need a copy of your baptismal certificate. Registration is necessary and you can do that by calling Celia St. Charles at 248-553- 4610, or by emailing her at: cstcharles@stfabian.org. We look forward to meeting you and accompanying you on this part of your faith journey! BAPTISM PREPARATION : If you are a new parent and this is your first child to be baptized at St. Fabian, you are invited to participate in the on-line baptism preparation class by e-mailing Celia St. Charles at: cstcharles@stfabian.org. I will send you a set of questions that you will be asked to answer and return to me, along with a baptismal information sheet. After returning these documents , you will then be invited to watch a DVD on baptisms at St. Fabian. This DVD is shown the 3 rd Thursday of each month at 7pm in the church. After watching the DVD you may then call the parish office to schedule your child’s baptism. Our next date for watching the DVD is: Thursday, August 8th If you have already had other children baptized at St. Fabian, you do not need to do the prep class. Simply fill out the “Baptism Info” form that can be found on the web site under Baptism Prep and e-mail it to: cstcharles@stfabian.org. Then call Celia at 248-553-4610 to schedule your child’s baptism. We celebrate baptisms on the 4 th Sunday of every month, immediately following the 12:30 pm liturgy. Sunday, September 22nd is the next available date for baptisms. A.C.T. (Acting on Catholic Social Teaching) Are you looking for something to do this summer to help the disadvantaged? If so, please consider joining one of our groups that helps serve dinner to the needy in Detroit. Every month we make 2 trips to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen on the east side of Detroit. Our Friday trip involves serving lunch and our Thursday trip, dinner. Sometimes we serve as few as 300 people, but often, many more hungry people are fed by our volunteers. The next summer Friday date is August 9. This group of 4 or 5 people meets in the St. Fabian parking lot at 10 AM, carpools to the Kitchen, serves lunch from 11 until 1 PM, and returns by 1:45. The remaining Thursday dinner date for the summer is August 22. This group of 6 to 8 people will meet in the church parking lot at 3 PM, carpool to the Kitchen, serve dinner from 4 until 6, and return by 6:45. One Saturday a month we also send a group of about 5 people to serve dinner at COTS, a shelter in downtown Detroit. For this trip the group meets in the St. Fabian parking lot at 4:45, carpools to COTS, serves dinner from 6 to 7 PM, and returns by 7:30. We bring along desserts to serve to the residents, as well as bread donations from Panera, which are kindly obtained for us by a parishioner. Sign-up sheets for these outings will be posted near the gym this summer, where Mass will be held. Reminder phone calls will be made a few days before the outings. Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time PAGE 5 August 4, 2013 Adult Faith Formation Opportunities “This Is Our Faith” Have you ever wished for the opportunity to update your understanding of the Catholic faith? If so, please consider joining us as we gather to learn more about what our Church teaches. We will meet in the school cafeteria from 5pm until 6:15pm on the 2 nd and 4 th Monday OR Tuesday of each month beginning October 14 th OR 15 th . This is a great chance for parents dropping off their children for Christian Formation classes, but it is open for anyone who wants to join us. We will be using the book: “This Is Our Faith” by Michael Pennock. You can purchase it from the parish office for $12 or order it on-line. Pre-registration is necessary—see below. Scripture Study You have several opportunities to learn more about Sacred Scripture this year! Each Tuesday evening beginning September 10 th , we meet from 7-9pm in the parish office conference room to learn about the upcoming Sunday readings through reading what the scholars say and then discussing how we can make them relevant to our daily life. All materials are provided and there is no cost to you. Because each week is an independent study, you are welcome whenever you can make it. On Wednesday mornings, beginning September 11 th , from 9am-10:30am in the small social hall, we are once again offering the “Catholic Scripture Study” program. This is a 28-week program. The cost for the participants’ guide is: $46.95 + shipping. They will be studying Joshua, Judges and Ruth. Please register by contacting Jane Hier-Rose at: 248-661-4528, or Barb Heilman at 248-592-0470. There is also a vicariate wide Scripture study that is facilitated by Fr. David Santoro and is offered at St. Gerald’s on Farmington Road from Oct. 2 nd -Nov. 20 th on Wednesdays, from 7-8:30pm in their social hall. They are studying 1 st & 2 nd Corinthians. A free will offering is accepted. “Catholicism” Another way to update your faith will be through participating in a ten week class where we will be studying Fr. Robert Barron’s “Catholicism” series, which explains not only what Catholics believe and why, but also displays in breathtaking, visual detail the richness of the Church’s global culture via high definition DVD’s. These sessions include listening to Fr. Barron present the Church’s essential teachings as we watch him travel around the globe to see the Faith in the depths of its beliefs and practices. Registration is necessary—see below. These sessions will meet on Tuesday mornings from 9:00am until 10:30am, from October 8 th through December 10 th (We do NOT meet on Dec. 3 rd ). Lector Training Any confirmed, active Catholic, age 16 and older, who is gifted with an excellent speaking voice, is invited to become trained as a lector to read at our weekend liturgies. Training will take place on Thursday, September 19th, from 7-9pm in the church. Lectors are scheduled two months at a time, and are typically on 2-3 times in that 2 month period. Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion Training Any confirmed, active Catholic, age 14 and older is invited to become trained as an EMHC. We do not schedule EMHC’s—rather you help at whatever Mass you attend. Training will take place on Monday, October 7 th , from 7-8pm in the church. Vatican II Emeritus Pope Benedict XVI called for a “Year of Faith,” which celebrated the 50 th Anniversary of the opening of Vatican II. As a way to close out this Year of Faith, which ends in November, we are excited to have Fr. Vic Clore, who was actually in the seminary in Rome during Vatican II. He will give us a 6 week overview of how the Vatican II documents deal with such topics as: Are non-Catholics able to be saved, what role do the laity have in the Church, what is informed conscience, etc. Everyone is invited to join us in the social hall on Wednesday evenings, Oct. 9 through Nov. 20 (off Nov. 6) from 7-9pm.
