End of Year Gathering
Wednesday 7 December, The Farrall Centre
One of the key events that brings our School student, parent and staff community closer is the
End of Year Gathering. On this special occasion, we are able to gather, share, enjoy and
celebrate the performances and talents of many students K-12. The theme of the gathering
will be Peace.
This year there will be a slightly different format. We will be holding two gatherings, one at
6.00pm and the next at 7.45pm. We would suggest that parents with younger children
consider attending the gathering at 6.00pm, and we encourage older students and their
families to attend the 7.45pm gathering.
We ask that families are seated together in the spirit of the event. Unaccompanied students
will be seated in an area to be supervised by staff. We look forward to seeing you there.
This year at the Gatherings the whole School is being encouraged to donate gifts of nonperishable
food to the Salvation Army as a response to their Food Alert sent out last month.
Wicker baskets will be placed beside the Christmas tree in The Farrall Centre and anyone
wishing to donate a food item is welcome to place this in one of the baskets. We recognise
that some students and parents have already donated food in the classrooms at Morris and at
Clemes and these food boxes will be placed under the tree. If you have any questions about
this activity please contact Sandra Brooks 6210 2255.
Movember
Throughout November 2011, The Friends’ School Service Committee has been raising funds
for Movember, in support of mens’ health initiatives. Three of our staff members, Ben
Smethurst, Martin Bower and Aidan Hibberd grew moustaches, sharing their progress on the
webpage http://mosista.co/friendsofthemo. In support of their efforts, Bridget Wallbank,
Grace Bunton, Briody Hilder and Tess Hatfield baked cupcakes to sell on the free-dress day
held on 16 November. The free dress and cupcakes raised over $1000 with another $1000
raised through sponsorship of the staff moustaches. Thank you and congratulations to all of
the staff and students who contributed to this fantastic effort.
Western Shore Bus Service
Many parents would be aware that the School has traditionally operated a Western Shore bus
service to and from school. The service provides transport for children from Kindergarten to
Year 6 and the route encompasses some central and southern suburbs (terminating at
Margate). We are presently considering demand for the service to continue into 2012. The
School has written directly to families that we believe may benefit from this service. If you
do not receive a letter but wish your child to use the service in 2012, please contact the
Morris Office to obtain pricing and an expression of interest form by no later than Friday 9
December 2011.
Monday 5 December 9.00am-3.00pm
We look forward to welcoming Year 6 students to the High School campus for a day of taster
School office to let us know as soon as possible.
Year 10 Week Zero
to a Christmas Party for the disadvantaged on the agenda for the CAS days. Clemes tutors are
looking forward to meeting their new Tutor groups during their orientation days. Please
contact the High School office early if your child is ill and unable to attend on a particular
day.
Year 8 Geology Excursion
On Tuesday 6 December, Lindy Pritchard’s Year 8 Science class will participate in a
Geology excursion. The trip will take place during their regular Period 4 Science time and
into lunchtime. Students will visit Long Beach, Sandy Bay and will go on a short walk along
the beach investigating a range of geological features. Students are to wear sports uniform on
this day, including sturdy shoes that will allow them to comfortably walk on some rocky
terrain. They should be prepared for all weather conditions – with a coat, hat and sunscreen.
Students will also need to bring a cut lunch and drink. Please contact Lindy Pritchard,
lpritch@friends.tas.edu.au or 6210 2236 if you would like more information.
6.00pm Wednesday 14 December, The Farrall Centre
The Farewell Assembly for Year 10 draws to a close their time in High School through
words, music, awards and presentations from a variety of areas of School life. While most
students will continue into Year 11 at Clemes, a few are leaving to pursue their studies
elsewhere and we take this opportunity to farewell them. The assembly lasts for around an
hour and reports are distributed at the end of the assembly in House areas in the foyer or side
of the stage. We invite families to join us for this special event.
