CYLINDRICAL ROLLER BEARINGS N, NU, NJ
In applications where high radial capacity at very high speeds in relatively limited space is needed, cylindrical roller bearings
proved eminently successful. Cylindrical roller bearings, as the name implies, use cylindrical-shaped rollers as the rolling, loadcarrying
elements. Usually, the rollers are made with the length of the roller being equal to the diameter of the roller. Cylindrical
roller bearings offer the highest radial-load capacity for a given bore and width of all types of rolling bearings. While they
have no special field of appllications, cylindrical roller bearings are generally found in heavy-duty, power-producing, powertransmission,
and power-absorbing machinery. In the N type, ther rollers run between two integral flanges attached to the
inner ring; the outer ring is made without flanges.
In the NJ type, there are two flanges on the outer ring and one on the inner ring. This allows the cylindrical roller bearing to
handle small axial loads. A common application for an NJ design cylinderical roller bearing is to locate the armature of the
electrical traction motor used on diesel-electric locomotives.
The most common type of cylindrical roller bearing is the single row design, known as NU. In the NU type, the flanges are placed
on the outer ring and the inner ring is made without flanges.
