Dear Parents, Alumni, Friends and Faculty,
Welcome to an international feast of décor, food and wonderful auction items at the “Friends Around
the World” 2006 Live Auction. This year, we celebrate those that have directly benefi ted from your
extraordinary generosity. First and foremost, we applaud all current and former parents, alumni, faculty
and friends for the many contributions and loyalty to this event which has brought new treasured
“friends” to our school community for years.
At Sidwell, our values do not dwell lifelessly in a mission statement, but live in all we do at the school.
They are expressed openly and forthrightly in our actions to lead in the areas of academic excellence,
Quaker values, the prizing of diversity and environmental stewardship. As we planned this year’s auction,
we noted not only that we are a community which embraces the diverse international heritage of
its members, but we are an institution actively engaged at the forefront of international education.
As lower school parents, we were impressed by the immediate introduction of the Spanish language
in the PK year. Japan is studied in the second grade and China in fourth grade. Two of our 2nd grade
teachers received a grant to visit Japan last year, and three of our teachers have been helping to democratize
schools in the former Soviet Union. Also the Chinese language is alive in the Middle School
in the 7th and 8th grades as is a successful minimester trip to Beijing. In the Upper School, our students
from our Chinese sister schools bring much to us and are active in sports, arts, and clubs. On
the broader international front, the Head of the Hope School in Kabul visited for a week, and Sidwell
hosted two students from Ramallah Friends School. The Japan Language and Culture Summer
Program entered its 22nd year as four students will spend three weeks in Tokyo and Hiroshima in
July and August. And this year, to celebrate Mozart’s 250th birthday, the chamber chorus traveled to
Vienna in March to perform in anniversary concerts.
The international effort is also evident in other aspects of the school: cultural, economic and racial
diversity of the student body championed by Josh Wolman and the admissions team; the faculty, a
global blend and true testament to Sidwell’s mission; and the current improvements of the physical
plant, an example to schools here and around the world as a place to learn and grow in a healthy
“green” environment. These are just a few examples which are receiving national attention and acclaim
in the educational community. We thank Bruce Stewart for leading the community in this exciting
global direction. He is an inspiration to us all.
We want to make special note of the “Sidwell Academy”, developed just last year and the soon to be
launched “The Apprentice”. Within both of these categories Sidwell parents have offered their unique
talents to share with other parents or, as in “The Apprentice”, with our children. These auction programs
provide wonderful opportunities that are also affordably priced.
Each year the chairs are blessed with a team of people who back them up at every step and give
them much needed advice. This year is certainly no exception…we thank them all. With a strategic
plan Patty Carocci, Sandy Rossi and Lauren Galleher, gave their all to the effort. We are indebted to
the extraordinary auction committee for their creativity, time and willingness to ask anyone for everything!
After confi rming that we actually said yes, on our fi rst day, Cathy Russell Donilon, without
whose advice and counsel we could not have made it through this, handed us a detailed description
of what the next few months would be like. Tracy Bernstein always watched our backs provid-

ing sound advice from her years of auction experience. On bended knee we thank the following for
their talents and patience throughout the entire process: the writing team of Liz Bernstein Norton ‘84 ,
Lisa Larragoite, Mary Jane Maslanka ‘72 and Susan Vitale whose clever entries could make anyone
open their wallets even wider; Ivy Howells, Wendy Susswein and Louise Micallef who have taken the
Sidwell Academy to huge heights; Donna Siahpoosh with silent auction decor; Peggy Doetzel for her
detailed and skillful follow-up to each auction item; the silent auction team of Kristin Donoghue, Ellen
Alexander, Karen Ballotta, Karen Marcou, and Cristina Ferreira at whose persistence former donors
were moved to re-donate and who discovered many new donors; Denise Coffi n and Cathy Russell
Donilon for placing us all next to interesting people; Hilary Stephens for reaching out to the Upper
School on our behalf. Our auction super star is Brittany East who designed the beautiful and creative
invitation, the catalog and all of the graphics. A special shout out of thanks to those parents who went
beyond the call of duty: Beth and Ron Dozoretz, who helped get the auction off to a great start with
the pre-party, Debra Harmon, Patti Solis Doyle, Tom Nides, Amy Nathan, Andrea Newman and Nomvimbi
Meriwether, who secured many fabulous items. Finally we would like to extend a very special
note of gratitude to former Sidwell parents Maxine Isaacs and Jim Johnson and Martin Franks and
Mari Schluening for their years and years of kindness. Again, to all of you, thank you for being here
tonight and sharing your many resources with others.

Auction Bidding Procedures
GENERAL INFORMATION
Unless otherwise specifi ed, the following conditions are applicable to all items offered at the Auction:
• All sales are fi nal. Items may not be exchanged and no money will be refunded. All items are sold
“as is.”
• Unless otherwise noted, items and services are good for one year and must be used by April 9,
2007. Unless specifi ed, dates and times are to be arranged at the mutual convenience of both the
donor and the buyer. Buyers are responsible for making arrangements in advance, checking expiration
dates and restrictions on contracts and/or gift certifi cates, and for retaining the original paperwork
until the donation has been redeemed.
• Catalog descriptions of items include estimates of the item’s fair market value. All values are
estimates only and are not guaranteed by the School. Values are as declared by the donors.
• By his/her purchase, the buyer waives any claim for liability against the School or its employees,
the Auction volunteers, the Auction fi rm and the Auctioneer, and the donor of the property or services.
Neither the School, the Auctioneer, nor the donor is responsible for any personal injuries or damages
to property that may result from the use of property or services sold.
• Items will be given only to those individuals showing proof of purchase.
• Getaways: Resort and family properties are not available to student groups or minors
unaccompanied by adults. Commercial vacations and accommodations require advance
reservations; offer is good on a space available basis; unless otherwise noted, meals,
alcoholic beverages, taxes, gratuities, and transportation are not included.
• Restaurants: Reservations are required for most establishments. Unless otherwise noted,
alcoholic beverages, taxes, and gratuities are generally not included.
• Services: Gratuities for stylists, technicians, trainers and other service providers are generally
not included in gift certifi cates. Please remember to show your appreciation accordingly.
• Tickets/Passes: Event, performances, and museum tickets/passes that do not specify a
date may require advance reservations and be subject to availability.
AUCTIONPAY
We are excited to have the services of AuctionPay allowing the Auction Committee to quickly attach
your auction night purchases with our invoicing/receipt software. At Registration, volunteers will swipe
your credit card into the AuctionPay terminal. When you are the successful bidder of an auction item,
your credit card number will immediately be associated with the purchase of that item, thus increasing
our effi ciency the night of the auction as well as in the few days after. AuctionPay helps guarantee
less processing error. We hope you will enjoy the benefi ts of AuctionPay!
SILENT AUCTION BIDDING PROCEDURES
• Bid sheets describing each item are displayed near each item. Bid amounts are pre-printed
on the bid sheets. The bidder should print his/her bid number next to the amount at which
he/she wants to bid.
• Please do not write on the backs of the bid sheets. If you fi ll in the last space on a bid sheet, ask
a volunteer for an additional bid sheet. Valid bids must be placed before the Auction closes.
• In the event of a dispute, the Auction Board or its designated representative will have sole

and fi nal discretion to determine the winning bidder.
• An Auction offi cial will nullify your bid if you are blocking or otherwise obstructing
another bidder from access to a table at any point during the Silent Auction OR if you bid
after the announcement of the close of bidding. Only an Auction offi cial may nullify a
bid. Questions concerning the Silent Auction should be referred to an Auction offi cial.
LIVE AUCTION BIDDING PROCEDURES
• The Live Auction will begin promptly at the conclusion of the Super Silent Auction and will continue
without interruption until all items have been auctioned.
• To enter a bid, the bidder raises his/her card. Bidspotters will be assigned throughout the room to
assist the Auctioneer in recognizing bids.
• The highest bidder acknowledged by the Auctioneer will be the purchaser. In the event of any dispute,
the Auctioneer will have sole and fi nal discretion to determine the successful purchaser.
• If the Auctioneer determines that an opening bid is not commensurate with the value of the item or
not equal to the minimum set by the donor, the Auctioneer may withdraw the item for sale.
• The purchaser will be asked to sign an acknowledgement sheet at the time of purchase noting his/
her bid number and winning bid amount.
• Payment for Live Auction items must be received the night of the Auction.
IMPORTANT REMINDERS
The success of the Auction depends on the goodwill of the donors and on careful observance by the
buyers of terms stated on bid sheets and gift certifi cates. BUYERS SHOULD NOT ATTEMPT TO
ALTER THE TERMS OF A DONATION. The District of Columbia sales tax will not be charged on
any tangible items you purchase at the auction tonight (Act 15-250 of the D.C. law 15-85, March 10,
2004).
IMPORTANT TAX INFORMATION
Federal income tax laws and regulations impose important requirements concerning the documentation
you must have in order to substantiate the deductibility of certain charitable contributions. Auction
purchases are tax deductible only to the extent that the amount paid for an item exceeds the fair
market value of that item. Further, the Internal Revenue Service now requires charitable organizations
to provide receipts listing the fair market value of each item. At the Auction and in the week to follow,
you will be provided with a receipt that will list both the fair market value of each item purchased and
the amount you paid for each item. Please save the receipt for your records in order to substantiate
any income tax deductions you may take as a result of your Auction purchases. Buyers and donors
should consult with their tax advisers for defi nite advice concerning deductibility.
