LENT
Lent has begun this week with a few generous parents making pancakes for the children on Shrove
Tuesday and then Mass and the distribution of ashes on Wednesday. Fr John reminded us of the
purpose of Lent and the prayer as we received the ashes was ”Repent and believe in the Good News”.
Prayer, fasting, almsgiving and doing good deeds are still traditional practices of Lent. We often see the
world‟s needy in our living rooms through media, and real progress can only be made through changing
the situation with our donations and prayers. Prayer today means stopping and taking a breather from
the „rat race‟ and listening to God. Fasting makes more sense when it means going without in order to
share with others: living simply so others may simply live.
Project Compassion boxes will be placed in the classroom during Lent.
It would be good if children were encouraged to do a job or two to earn some money to put in the box so
that they are actually doing the good deed.
The year has commenced smoothly and it has been good to meet up with parents at the Fish & Chip
nights, parent meetings and the commitment mass. The last Fish & Chip night will be next Tuesday for
the Prep Classes where we hope to see all families in attendance.
Testing has begun in Numeracy and Literacy and this is compared to data collected and passed on from
the previous teacher to ensure that children are being taught at their level of achievement.
Parent Association meeting February 23 rd at 7pm in the hall meeting room. Don‟t forget all parents
are invited. Subway Dates will be discussed at PA meeting and are yet to be finalised.
SAFETY
We have had some very dangerous practices happening as children are being dropped off and picked
up. Twice this week we have had incidents where children were almost knocked over.
THEREFORE PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING AND FOLLOW CAREFULLY
Before & After School Drop Off and Collection
The safety of your child is of utmost importance to us. Please abide by road rules when dropping off and
picking up children. Please refrain from doing U turns near the school entrances and stopping in the
middle of the road to drop off or pick up children.
Parking
Please note that parking officers are VERY diligent around the school. The parking around the boundary
of the school in Mora Ave & Davey Ave is permit parking only and only the teachers have permits and
parents have been fined when just stopping to drop off children. Parking is permitted further down and
on the opposite sides of Mora Ave and Davey Street and on the church side of Johnson Street but there
are time limits. Children can walk to school if dropped further down the street on the school side.
We have been able to set up a “2 Minute Drop Off Zone” outside the school gate in Davey Ave, however
you MUST not leave the car or park for longer than 2 minutes. This area is most useful especially if you
do have younger siblings in the car. After school children can see you as you arrive and go to the car.
Please be mindful of our neighbours and do not park over their driveways or in their driveways.
The area behind the parish house is NOT available for parking as this is restricted to permits.

Just another reminder to inform the school office as soon as your address or phone numbers are
changed to ensure contact in case of emergency.

TO THE OFFICE BY NEXT WEDNESDAY 29 th FEBRUARY AT THE VERY LATEST – PLEASE
COLLECT FORM FROM THE SCHOOL OFFICE IF YOU ARE ELIGIBLE - REFER TO PREVIOUS
NEWSLETTER OR ASK AT THE OFFICE FOR DETAILS.

SCHOOL FEES & LEVIES
Accounts for 2012 school fees and levies have now been sent home with the children. If you have not
received an account yet please check in your eldest child‟s school bag.
We would ask that if anyone is experiencing any difficulty in making timely payments, they should
contact the school office and talk to the office staff or make an appointment to meet with the principal. It
is stressed that all situations are treated with the utmost confidentiality.
MEDICAL DETAILS
Please ensure that all medical details are up to date and have current directions from your doctor These
forms need to be updated each year and forwarded to the school ASAP please.

Allergy Form
Anaphylaxis information treatment form if an Epipen is required. This must be supplied
by the parent and in current date status at all times.
PARENTS OF YEAR 6 STUDENTS
If you are intending to send your child to a Catholic Secondary school and have not yet enrolled your
child , you should do so immediately as the applications for enrolment for Year 7 in 2013 close on March
2 nd 2012.
Year 5 parents may like to start looking at the options for your child for the following year. More details
were sent home with the year 5 /6 students during the week .
PARENT INFORMATION BOOKLETS
All parents should have received a Parent Information booklet regarding activities, expectations of
children and parents in the learning process for your child‟s level.
The „Information About Your Child’ sheet for each child should now be completed and returned to your
child‟s class teacher. This information is very helpful for the classroom teachers when getting to know
your child and developing a good rapport with them.
MUSIC CLASSES
Music Classes will be run by the School Creative Music. Classes will operate on Wednesday nights in
the meeting room at the back of the church and in the portable classroom in the Mora Ave playground.
Entry to the lessons in the portable classroom will be through the double gate in Mora Ave. The meeting
room is behind the church in Johnson St. Lessons include Violin, Keyboard and Guitar at present. If you
wish another instrument to be taught, please contact the music office. Brochures are available from the
school office.
Children who are attending classes are NOT to be waiting for classes without adult supervision or
playing in the junior playground.
The cost of these lessons is not included in school fees and are by arrangement with the music school.

There has been some confusion regarding the terms associated with the grade and the Level
Our classes are structured according to the levels referred to in the Victorian Essential Learning
Standards which are :
Level 1
Year Prep (soon to be called Foundation)
Level 2 Years 1 & 2 ( once called grade 1 & grade 2)
Level 3 Years 3 & 4 ( once called grade 3 & grade 4)
Level 4 Years 5 & 6 ( once called grade 5 & grade 6)

Catholic Education Staff will work with staff on the process for the
School Review which is to take place in June.
Please note that the date March 8 th was originally marked as a school closure day but CEO staff could
not keep that date, therefore the change to the 23 rd . I am aware that some families had arranged a
long weekend for that weekend. If that is the case I am happy for the families to keep to those
arrangements and we will make sure that there are no important things happening on that date.

Literacy News
Don‟t forget the Parent Helper Training sessions being held for parents who are new to
assisting in the classroom. Parent helpers must have attended a training session and have an
approved Working with Children Check before helping in the classroom. There was a fantastic
response last year and it was a great opportunity to inform parents about the school‟s Literacy
program and the role of parent helpers in the classroom.
Notes have already gone home with Prep – Grade 2 students for you to indicate your interest in
attending.

Tennis Classes at Sacred Heart – A flyer went home recently regarding tennis lessons at Sacred Heart – the time
listed was incorrect – lessons are from 8.00am to 8.30am.
Singing and Dancing Opportunities in 2012
The Australian Youth Choir and the Australian Youth Dance Theatre not only give young people the
opportunity to develop their skills within the Performing arts under expert guidance, but the chance to make new
friends and perform in exciting concerts. Our kids work as a team, develop lifelong friendships and have great fun.
