Who doesn’t love a baby? Little fingers and toes, a
tiny nose and ears, bubbly smiles, and gentle coos
cause even the toughest among us to pause and
marvel at such a glorious work of creation. Author
Carl Sandburg went so far as to say, “Never will
a time come when the most marvelous recent
invention is as marvelous as a newborn child.”
We couldn’t agree more.
In reflecting on the past year at Methodist Health
System, we found ourselves impressed at the
number of these marvelous inventions carried to
full term through the Life Shines Bright Pregnancy
Program at the Methodist Dallas Medical Center
Golden Cross Academic Clinic.
Consider: The average percentage of preterm births
in the Methodist Dallas service area is 18 percent —
that’s almost 1 in 5 babies born at increased risk
for a variety of complications, including premature
death. But for young women in Life Shines Bright,
that rate is only 5.6 percent, or a little more than
1 in 20 babies. It’s an astounding success story
and one we’re delighted to highlight in this year’s
issue of Crossroads.
Upon further reflection, we couldn’t help but
recognize that these success stories — and the
hundreds of others we see every day — belong
to you. Every hour volunteered, every dollar shared
is your gift toward the even greater gift of life itself.
In these pages, you’ll read about the hundreds
of women who had access to free mammograms
this year, the patients managing chronic conditions
with medications acquired through MedAssist, the
young medical professionals of tomorrow learning
about service and integrity today, the 2,000 babies
expected to be born in Mansfield next year, and
several other gifts that you have given to both
Methodist and the communities it serves.

You’re helping more babies arrive on time
“Oh, this baby’s moving! What’d you have for breakfast?”
exclaims Darlene Howl, women’s health care nurse practitioner,
to a young mom 30 weeks along in her pregnancy.
The little guy has the hiccups, and both she and Howl
giggle about his tiny noises as they listen to him through
a Doppler device.
This is just one brief, touching glimpse at the Life Shines
Bright Pregnancy Program, established at the Methodist
Dallas Medical Center Golden Cross Academic Clinic three
years ago to bring down the area’s preterm birthrate —
averaging a staggering 18 percent.
Of the 300 women who have completed the program
since 2008, only 5.6 percent of them had preterm births.
That rate beats not only the county, state, and national
averages today, it’s also 4 percentage points lower than
the March of Dimes’ national goal for 2020.
Such overwhelmingly positive statistics don’t just appear,
however. Stephen Patrick, MD, residency program director
for obstetrics/gynecology (OB/GYN) and OB/GYN department
chair for Methodist Dallas, credits generous donors,
the talents of dedicated staff, and some perfect timing
back in 2007.
The program is a shining example of how extra time with
a provider, education about a healthy pregnancy, and a
nurturing environment can save a baby’s life — and future.

The Life Shines Bright Pregnancy Program
has proven effective in lowering preterm
birthrates by over one-half.

latest success stories.
How Life Shines Bright was born
Shortly after being named residency director at
Methodist Dallas, Dr. Patrick learned that the community
surrounding the hospital was home to the
Metroplex’s highest preterm birthrates. Preterm
births can produce devastating consequences for
children at birth and later in life, including increased
risks for learning and hearing disabilities, blindness,
breathing and behavioral problems, cerebral palsy,
and, in some cases, death.
Also to be considered is the economic strain. The
medical costs for a baby born on time are about
$4,000. For a baby born early, they’re more than
10 times that amount. When the March of Dimes
came to Dr. Patrick looking for a hospital to help
implement CenteringPregnancy ® , a program proven
effective in lowering preterm birthrates by over one-half,
“it was like a lightbulb went on,” Dr. Patrick says.
Julie Whitsitt, executive director of the Dallas
Division for March of Dimes, recalls: “Methodist
saw the need, and we saw the need. Knowing
that the program had proven outcomes, we felt it
was something that would be highly effective and a
great fit for the area where Methodist Dallas sits.”
In 2009, First Lady Laura Bush dedicated the
proceeds from her Robert S. Folsom Leadership
Award dinner to Life Shines Bright, giving the
program the inaugural financial boost it needed.

The Methodist Dallas approach
At this point, one could say the rest is history, but
in Life Shines Bright’s case, the pregnancy program
is actually making history.
For starters, Methodist Dallas is the only hospital
in Dallas County to accept the March of Dimes’
invitation to implement CenteringPregnancy.
Because of its incredible success in lowering preterm
birthrates, the hospital has become the gold
standard for other health care facilities across the
nation to follow.
While CenteringPregnancy is designed for all women
regardless of socioeconomic background, the majority
of women benefiting from Life Shines Bright are
uninsured or underinsured and quite young, often in
their teens. Most also have behaviors that can put
their babies at risk, such as smoking, drugs, poor
dental hygiene, and poor nutrition.
Life Shines Bright addresses all of these issues,
inviting local experts to lead discussions with the
young women about good parenting choices. This
form of prenatal education is unique to Life Shines
Bright, which has welcomed to the program lactation
and safety consultants, nutritionists, and dental
hygienists. Representatives from the Women, Infants
and Children Peer Dads program helped advise
young fathers, and Junior League of Dallas members
have shared tips on budgeting and finances.
Howl also leads a sewing circle with the young
women, who embroider baby blankets and make
rebozos — long shawls for carrying their babies.

Changed lives
“We talk about the law of unintended consequences,
and it’s usually about bad consequences,” Dr. Patrick
says. “But these are good consequences.”
Among these positive outcomes are healthy moms
and babies, mothers finishing their education, involved
fathers, and because of contraception and
natural reproduction education, a lower repeat
teen-pregnancy rate.
These young mothers’ stories speak for themselves:
One encouraged her cousin to quit using drugs
and join the program when she got pregnant.
Another found the comfort of loving arms around her
when she confessed she was living in a car to avoid
an abusive relationship.
And another, Judith Lazo, is now working as the
administrative assistant for Life Shines Bright and
pursuing her prerequisites for Methodist’s Associate
Degree in Nursing Program.
“I see a lot of transformation in these girls that
come in scared, alone, some without support at
home,” Howl says. “They begin to feel self-confident.
It empowers them — taking possession of their own
care, their own body. They feel like they’re a part of
their pregnancy. That empowers them to be strong
mothers and to be able to care for a family, a child.”
At each Life Shines Bright session, Howl meets
one-on-one with every patient, answering her
questions and offering appropriate medical advice.
In the group setting, she welcomes discussion and
tries to help the girls grow into a support group for
each other.

The future of Life Shines Bright
Dr. Patrick’s vision to pioneer a new standard of
prenatal care in Dallas and beyond is awe-inspiring.
“Through Life Shines Bright, I hope we’ll see a drop
in the poverty rate,” he says. “I hope we’ll see a
drop in the preterm birthrate. I hope we’ll see more
kids going to college. I hope we’ll see more regular
vaccinations. I hope we’ll see a healthier community,
and not just in terms of health care but also in terms
of education, crime, drug use, and poverty.”
Thanks to generous donors, the Golden Cross
Academic Clinic now has an entire floor dedicated to
Life Shines Bright, which used to host four meetings
a week in a lobby space. Dr. Patrick hopes to screen
1,200 women a year in the new space.
Another goal for the program is to implement more
community outreach initiatives to help women learn
their risk factors for preterm pregnancy.

of these babies would be born premature. If not for you, some
would not be born. Thanks to you, children have opportunities

No more fear

At the end of a Life Shines Bright session, Howl gathers up
the young women in a circle. They hold hands, and together
they say a positive statement Howl has found to share with
them. This week, it’s from the Bible: “Perfect love casts out
fear” (1 John 4:18).

Crystal Charity Ball
The Crystal Charity Ball spends 3,000 hours a year on
a selection process to choose programs worthy of its
generous support — amounting to $100 million in the
past 60 years. Its 100 active members are dedicated
to making a difference in children’s lives, and this year
they’ve chosen to benefit the Life Shines Bright Pregnancy
Program.
“We really are impressed with their focus and what
they’re doing,” says Connie O’Neill, 2011 Crystal Charity
Ball chairman. “These young people — both the teens
and infants — are the future of our country. We feel very
passionate about being able to help them.”
United Way
Since 1999, Methodist Health System employees have
had the opportunity to donate part of their income to
support United Way. This year, United Way reciprocated
by supporting the Life Shines Bright Pregnancy Program.
“We invest in programs that change lives forever by
breaking the costly, destructive cycles of dependency,”
says Jennifer Sampson, president and CEO for United
Way of Metropolitan Dallas. “Life Shines Bright aligns
perfectly within our health impact area.
“It reduces the risk of premature birth and more
complicated long-term health issues, and the program
will also save millions of dollars in expensive downstream
neonatal intensive care. It’s the perfect example of the
long-term solutions we at United Way are seeking.”

Junior League of Dallas
For 30 years, the Junior League of Dallas has
supported Methodist Dallas Medical Center.
Not only do 39 of its members volunteer a total
of 2,340 hours a year, but it has also put its
generous financial support behind the Life
Shines Bright Pregnancy Program.
“Life Shines Bright has almost completely eradicated
a significant health issue,” says Susan Wells, president
of the Junior League of Dallas. “It’s so effective
that, it appears to me, it will be a model for prenatal
health care in the future. I think Methodist will be a
leader in the nation for this program because their
results are incredible.”
March of Dimes, Dallas Division
The March of Dimes’ mission is to provide healthy
birth outcomes for all babies, so it seemed natural
to encourage health organizations to adopt
CenteringPregnancy ® . Methodist Dallas was the only
hospital in Dallas County to rise to the challenge
with the Life Shines Bright Pregnancy Program, and
the folks at March of Dimes couldn’t be happier
with its success.
“It has our wholehearted support,” says Julie
Whitsitt, executive director for the Dallas Division.
“We are hugely enthusiastic about it. If this program
were everywhere, the mission of March of Dimes
would be much closer to the finish line.”
Marilyn Herrick, director of program services at
March of Dimes, says the program is “transforming
the community. The name is appropriate,
because this program is shining a bright light on
this community.”

Brad Brown, director of marketing and business development at Austin Commercial, says the company is
proud of its long-standing relationship with Methodist, dating back to the late 1980s. But in the past four
years, the company has made Methodist — specifically the Life Shines Bright Pregnancy Program — a
beneficiary of its E. V. Brown Memorial Golf Tournament to raise funds for pediatric needs.
“We live here, we work here, this is where we are based,” he says. “Children are an important part of the
future, so obviously the entities that benefit the children and, ultimately, the betterment of the entire Dallas

“The mission of Golden Cross answers the call
of Christ: ‘Heal the sick … Freely you have
received; freely give,’” says Julie Yarbrough,
chairwoman of the Methodist Health System
Foundation Golden Cross Division board of
trustees. For more than 85 years, the ministry
of Golden Cross has helped to ensure that
those in need have compassionate care.
Today, Golden Cross continues to reach out to
those who are underinsured and uninsured
through lifesaving health care programs offered
in cooperation with the Methodist Dallas Medical
Center Golden Cross Academic Clinic and beyond.
“The MedAssist program connects patients to longterm
drug assistance plans, bridges the gap until
those plans begin, and monitors patients’ medical
conditions as they take the medication over time,”
Clinic Administrator Greg Davidson says. With
the assistance of a MedAssist social worker, a
dietitian, and a health educator, patients apply
for medications from pharmaceutical companies,
take their medications as prescribed, follow
suggested dietary regimens, and participate in
chronic disease management programs.
Davidson says it’s projected that the program will
purchase more than 600 prescriptions at a cost of
$65,466 and acquire free medicines estimated at a
market value of $546,328 during fiscal year 2011.
Also this year, Golden Cross partnered with
St. Andrew United Methodist Church to provide
diabetes education to patients at the West Side
Clinic in Plano, an outreach mission of the church
that serves many of the underinsured and
uninsured in Collin County.
From August through November, both a registered
dietitian and certified health educator funded
by Golden Cross offered a series of diabetes
management classes based on American Diabetes
Association guidelines, Davidson says. Topics
covered included healthy eating, taking medication
properly, and adopting healthy coping mechanisms.
As a feature of the partnership, the sessions also
served to train other professional health educators
to continue the classes at the West Side Clinic after
November, with the ongoing availability of Golden
Cross to consult and provide in-kind resources.
“Because of the generosity of our donors,
Golden Cross is treating more working poor,
elderly, and indigent than ever before across
Dallas and Collin counties,” Yarbrough says.

Mansfield women now have access to specialized care
When Methodist Mansfield Medical Center was
built five years ago, young, growing families were
especially glad they could welcome their newest
members into the world at their hometown hospital
instead of traveling to a facility in another city.
Since then, the number of women giving birth at
Methodist Mansfield has doubled, in part because
more obstetrics groups have moved their practices
to the hospital.
To meet the growing need for women’s services —
especially labor and delivery (L&D) — Methodist
Mansfield began construction in March on an
expanded Women’s Pavilion, to be completed in
December 2011.
“We have high expectations to meet the needs of a
great community,” says Jeanne Reeves, RN, BSN,
MS, chief nursing officer at Methodist Mansfield.
“More families will have access to some of the most
advanced, high-quality care for newborns, even to
the point of intensive care needs.”

More room for more babies
Rob Schulz, chairman of the Methodist Mansfield
Women’s Pavilion capital campaign committee,
says one of the great expectations for the expansion
will be to fully utilize the L&D department’s level
IIIA neonatal intensive care unit, as well as to treat
more than 2,000 women a year. That’s twice the
number treated in 2010.
The $9.1 million expansion will include:
• Six new labor, delivery, and recovery rooms
• A larger waiting room
• An expanded antepartum area
• Expanded medical staff work areas
• Expanded cesarean section recovery
and support.
“I feel like this expansion is one that’s going to
catapult this hospital into a completely different
dimension,” Schulz says. “The contributions
being made today are going to have a huge
impact on what Methodist Mansfield becomes
for our community long-term.”
Big gifts helping little lives
Schulz says there’s no way to outgive what
Methodist Mansfield has given to the community,
but seven major donors have demonstrated
significant appreciation for their community
hospital with extraordinary philanthropic gifts.

As part of its vision to support women’s health
initiatives at Methodist Mansfield, the Auxiliary has
pledged $150,000 over five years to the Women’s
Pavilion expansion.
“We were excited to embrace a meaningful project
that would focus on helping moms-to-be feel safe
and comfortable while receiving exceptional care,”
Auxiliary President Dee Lemser says. “To me,
this gift is like a Christmas present for the future.
This December, the Auxiliary will be giving a gift
of support to local women and newborns in
Mansfield and surrounding communities.”
Ronald and Linda Hopton-Jones
Auxilian Linda Hopton-Jones says supporting
the Women’s Pavilion expansion was a “natural
reaction.” Because their oldest granddaughter,
Raegan, was born seven weeks premature, the
Hopton-Joneses felt a special connection to this
meaningful project.
“Ron and I have empathy for other parents and
grandparents who have to go through the
trauma of not being able to go home with their
baby,” Mrs. Hopton-Jones says. “We spent a lot
of time in the waiting room outside the NICU when
Raegen was born. We wanted to support a space
that meant something and had special meaning to
us and our family.”
For that reason, they decided to dedicate their
generous contribution of $150,000 to the family
waiting room adjacent to the neonatal intensive
care unit (NICU).
The Lupe Murchison Foundation
The late widow of former Dallas Cowboys co-owner
John D. Murchison was committed to supporting
health care in the community, and since her
passing the foundation has carried on that legacy.
This year, the organization chose to give a gift of
$125,000 to name the Methodist Mansfield NICU
in honor of Mrs. Murchison.
“Health care and children’s welfare were hallmarks
of Mrs. Murchison’s generous giving, and granting
this support to protect the tiniest, most fragile
of lives reflects those passions perfectly,” says
Mike Redden, finance chairman of the Methodist
Health System Foundation board of trustees and
co-trustee of the Lupe Murchison Foundation.

in honor of Laura Irvine
Laura Irvine holds a special place in the hearts of Methodist Mansfield Medical Center’s leadership team.
As their former president, Irvine helped the hospital establish a presence in the community and led the
way to Methodist Manfield’s Women’s Pavilion expansion.
To show their gratitude, the hospital’s leadership team has raised $10,000 for the opportunity to name
the pavilion’s nurses station in Irvine’s honor.
Although Irvine recently assumed the role of Methodist Dallas Medical Center’s president, a sign of
appreciation for her inspiring leadership will remain in the Laura Irvine Nurses Station.

When Methodist built its campus in Mansfield, the
Esstmans were thrilled. Mrs. Esstman was even one
of the Auxiliary’s charter members. Now the couple is
giving not only time but treasure, as well, through their
generous gift of $100,000.
“Methodist was the only health system that had the faith
in the Mansfield area to come and put in a wonderful
facility for us,” Mrs. Esstman says. “Our philosophy is
that we support the community in which we live in many
different ways.”
Mansfield Women’s Club
For the Mansfield Women’s Club, supporting the
expansion of the Women’s Pavilion “is a perfect fit
for our philanthropic endeavors,” Club President
Kathleen Powers says. “We’re proud to be a women’s
organization, and with this gift of $25,000, we
have the opportunity to demonstrate support for
our community and, at the same time, promote
good health care for women.”
The club has supported Methodist Mansfield from
the beginning, contributing $125,000 over the years
to such projects as the cardiac unit and the NICU.
Meredith Hatch Foundation
When Meredith Hatch was killed in a tragic accident
three years ago, the community rallied to offer its
condolences and support to her family. Her husband,
Sherman, and their three sons decided to find a way
to give back to the community by supporting the
things Mrs. Hatch valued, including children’s health.
“Our foundation is geared toward charities specifically
for children,” Mr. Hatch says. “My wife was so involved
in the community and loved kids, loved to be involved
with children, and loved physical fitness. We would
hope our gift of $25,000 encourages future moms to be
healthy, have a healthy pregnancy, and hopefully have a
smooth delivery.”
Dura-Tech Processes, Inc.
As a family-run business, Dura-Tech Processes, Inc.,
saw the Women’s Pavilion expansion as an opportunity
not only to give back to the community by supporting
Methodist Mansfield but also to pay tribute to one of the
company’s co-founders, Nancy Hubbell. The company
donated $25,000 to have a recovery room named in
her honor.
“She was a strong, positive person who always had a
bright outlook about the future,” Linda Hubbell says of
her mother-in-law. “On behalf of Dura-Tech Processes,
Rick and I are hopeful that the women who come

Guild, Auxiliaries set up Methodist for success
Methodist Hospitals of Dallas Guild
The Methodist Hospitals of Dallas Guild has pledged
$110,000 over the next two years toward mammography
equipment for Methodist’s new mobile mammography unit.
“That van serves an incredible number of women — almost
daily — who otherwise wouldn’t go to the hospital for mammograms,”
says Olivette Hubler, 2010–2011 president of
the Guild.
The Guild’s generosity has also extended to the Junior
Volunteer program, funding two $1,000 scholarships at
Methodist Dallas and Methodist Charlton.
Each of the Guild’s fundraisers, including the annual style
show, aims to welcome the community into the hospital.
“When you invite people who might not otherwise be
there for a book sale or style show, it showcases what
a fine organization this is, and it’s nice to give back to it,”
Hubler says.
Methodist Dallas Medical Center Auxiliary
Methodist Dallas Auxiliary President Lu Hester says she’s
inspired by the charter auxilians, who 90 years ago raised
$70,000 to help build the original Dallas Methodist Hospital
and sewed all its linens.
“I consider the work we do as God’s mission,” she says. “We
are to be of service to the hospital with integrity and respect,
work with its clinical services, and volunteer in any way we
can.” That includes knitting caps for newborns, hosting jewelry
and pecan sales, and running the hospital’s gift shop — the
group’s biggest fundraiser.
Last year the Methodist Dallas Auxiliary’s efforts led to a donation
of $68,732 toward equipment for the neonatal intensive
care unit, four GlideScope ® intubation devices, a digital
hymnal for chaplaincy services, and six nursing scholarships.

Methodist Mansfield Medical Center Auxiliary
Thanks to its book fairs, accessory sales, and the popular annual
Holly Days event, the Methodist Mansfield Auxiliary has given
more than $150,000 to support programs, services, and equipment
for the hospital since its inception in 2006.
Most recently the group pledged $150,000 over five years toward
the $9.1 million expansion of the Women’s Pavilion.
Dee Lemser, president of the Methodist Mansfield Auxiliary, says
Methodist Mansfield is like a second home to the volunteers.
“We love to serve and want to make sure that every little incidental
need is met,” she says. “We want people to walk in and
recognize that we’re trying to be of service to them, to think, ‘I’m
sorry I’m sick, but if I have to be sick, I want my care to be at
Methodist Mansfield.’”
Methodist Charlton Medical Center Auxiliary
Formed in August 2010, the Methodist Charlton Auxiliary exceeded
its fundraising goals for its first fiscal year, raising $5,000. Its
gift-basket drawing, Tour of Tables, and holiday bazaar have
brought financial and moral support to the hospital.
“This is our community hospital,” Auxiliary President Marlies
Peregory says. “In the challenging economic times that we’re in,
everyone needs help, and that includes those who need medical
assistance. We’re happy to do our small part in raising money to
help Methodist Charlton keep giving back to the community.”

Chase Excellence students observe medical professionals in
action to learn more about their health care career options.

So many young people dream of becoming doctors,
nurses, and a variety of other health professionals.
Thanks to the Chase Excellence Junior Volunteer
scholarship program at Methodist Dallas Medical
Center, generously sponsored by the JPMorgan
Chase Foundation, high school students are learning
firsthand what it’s like to work in health care and how
to plan for a future career.
While most of the Chase Excellence students come from
low-income backgrounds, each earned a spot in the
program through a rigorous selection process.
“Extending learning opportunities, especially in low- to
moderate-income communities, is a key component of
Chase’s corporate philanthropy,” says Michelle Thomas,
head of the JPMorgan Chase Foundation in Dallas.
“We’re thrilled to start our third year of support for Chase
Excellence at Methodist and to be encouraging these
bright, gifted young people to hone their talents and give
back to their communities.”
Stephanie Leopard, director of volunteer services at
Methodist Dallas, says the JPMorgan Chase Foundation
grant gives the hospital a unique opportunity to help these
future medical professionals.
“Chase Excellence allows us to provide volunteer
opportunities for these high school students after
school,” she says. “It allows us to provide education
to introduce them to careers they may know nothing
or little about. And I’d like to think that these kids will
come back and work at Methodist, because they’re
from this community and they’ve invested in this
program, so they have strong ties.
“I also hope that we’ve helped them find a career
path and given them some role models that they
can relate to and emulate.”
And, of course, a key component to the educational
experience is service. Throughout the year, each student
volunteered 50 hours or more at Methodist Dallas.
“Volunteering at Methodist Dallas has been a great
honor!” student Emelia Beltran says. “I love helping out
the staff as well as interacting with different patients.
Every day at Methodist I learned something new that I
know can be helpful in my future choices.”

Every year, the outlook gets brighter for women with
breast cancer — largely because you’re helping
them afford and have access to lifesaving breast
screenings. The earlier breast cancer is found, the
easier it is to treat.
Hope for Dallas women
For 18 women last year, that diagnosis allowed
them to get connected to the treatment they
needed sooner rather than later.

One of Methodist Health System’s strongest teammates
in the fight against cancer is Susan G. Komen
for the Cure. In the past 11 years, Komen has given
Methodist almost $2 million — $326,000 this year
alone — to help provide diagnostic services for
women in Dallas County who are uninsured or
unable to afford them. By year’s end, approximately
1,000 women will have benefited from free screenings
at Methodist Dallas and Methodist Charlton
Medical Centers as well as on Methodist’s mobile
mammography unit.
“We aim to provide someone with financial need
with comprehensive breast care, and that’s what the
Komen gift helps us to do,” says Charla Gauthier, BS,
MPH, CCRP, supervisor of the Cancer Program at
Methodist Dallas. “Our goal is to eliminate all kinds
of barriers. If they say, ‘I can’t afford it,’ we say, ‘We’ll
pay for it.’ If they say, ‘I have no ride,’ we say, ‘We’ll
send someone to pick you up.’ If they say, ‘I only
speak Spanish,’ we say, ‘We’ll get someone who
speaks your language to help.’ Our goal is to get
them to a final diagnosis.”
“Just in the last couple of years, we’ve seen the
percentages of women getting their breast cancer
screenings increase,” says Jennifer Legere, executive
director of Komen’s Dallas County affiliate. “We know
that the investment we’re making in Methodist is truly
making an impact in the community, because they
are reaching out to the women who are underserved,
uninsured, or underinsured and getting them lifesaving
mammograms.
“Methodist helps women have the hope that where
they live shouldn’t be the deciding factor of whether
they should live or die.”
Joining the fight
In addition to Komen, other community organizations
have helped support Methodist’s efforts to
beat breast cancer:
Methodist Hospitals of Dallas Guild — When
Methodist decided to purchase a new mobile
mammography unit, the Guild pledged $110,000
to purchase new diagnostic equipment for the van,
helping with its much-needed upgrade.

Think Pink! Volley 4A Cure — Founded by breast
cancer “conqueror” Sheri Mathis, this volleyball
tournament brings together students from four high
schools that compete to raise money for mammography
and nurse navigator services at Methodist
Charlton. In its first two years, the organization has
donated $12,500, a large portion of which went to
the Methodist Charlton Women’s Imaging Center
to cover the cost of mammograms for women who
can’t afford them and to help with training and
education for patients and staff. It also helped the
hospital start its nurse navigator program, which
aids women throughout their cancer journeys.
Epsilon Sigma Alpha (ESA), Theta Pi Chapter —
Thanks to a $12,000 donation from ESA, Methodist
Charlton has been able to provide mammograms
for 95 South Dallas women who otherwise couldn’t
afford them.
“It gives a venue and a hope to women who otherwise
would not get their screening mammogram,
especially those who may have a family history
and no other means to pay for their screening
care,” says Lisa Hammonds, RT(R)(M), radiology
and women’s imaging manager at Methodist
Charlton. “I’ve seen this grant make a huge
difference. Some of our grant recipients were
diagnosed with early stages of breast cancer.
We are thankful this grant was available.”

Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks, shared
high praise for his friends Pat and Emmitt Smith,
the recipients of the 2010 Robert S. Folsom Leadership
Award last fall.
“I know a competitor when I see one, and in this
case I see two — two amazing competitors who
put that spirit and energy … into things that really,
really matter,” the master of ceremonies said.
“When they set their minds to achieve something,
it always happens.”
Cuban was not just referring to the former Dallas
Cowboy’s record-setting athletic abilities or dance
moves on Dancing With the Stars. Nor was he
solely focused on Mrs. Smith’s acting talent
or achievement as the first African American
Miss Virginia and runner-up Miss USA contestant.
He was most importantly considering the Smiths’
abundant service work outside of their professions
that earned them the Folsom Leadership Award
for 2010.

Honoring servant leadership
“The Smiths have always done things behind the
scenes and have not asked for notoriety or praise,”
says Daryl Johnston, who co-chaired the Folsom event
with Troy Aikman. “They’ve touched the lives of so
many children.”
The couple’s organization, Pat and Emmitt Smith
Charities, aims to create unique experiences and
opportunities for underserved children. Mr. Smith has
also been involved with initiatives and organizations
such as the Children’s Defense Fund, Make-A-Wish
Foundation, Salvation Army, Ronald McDonald House
Charities, and United Way.
The founder and CEO of TreasureYou TM , Mrs. Smith
is committed to inspiring girls and women to discover
their purpose and passion in life. She also works with
the Dallas Elevators mentoring program, supports
battered-women’s shelters and breast cancer initiatives,
and serves on the Methodist Dallas Medical Center
advisory board.
A week before the Folsom Award dinner, President
George W. and Laura Bush opened their home for a
reception with special friends of the 2010 Methodist
Foundation Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award.
Here President Bush acknowledged the Smiths’
servant leadership.
“Laura and I are privileged to be a part of this
special occasion to honor Pat and Emmitt Smith,”
he said. “Without a doubt, they exemplify the great
legacy of Bob Folsom.”

A commitment to Methodist
The Smiths found their way to Methodist when
Mrs. Smith’s father and Mr. Smith’s mother had
heart attacks.
“They received intense love, support, and kindness,
and we want others who may not be able to
afford health care to receive that type of care,”
Mrs. Smith said.
At the award dinner, the couple expressed
their gratitude to Methodist, for the care their
parents received, and to the city of Dallas, for
its welcoming spirit.
“I spent the last 20 years of my life right here in
Dallas,” Mr. Smith said. “I tell you without a doubt
Dallas is my home. Thank you all for supporting
my wife and me through all of our endeavors.”
Words of thanks were also extended to Methodist
Foundation President and CEO April Box Chamberlain
for her work in the community and at Methodist;

Trevor Rees-Jones receives 2011 Folsom Leadership Award
In 2011, the legacy of honoring exceptional community leaders
and, in turn, supporting Methodist Health System continued as
Trevor Rees-Jones became the seventh recipient of the Methodist
Health System Robert S. Folsom Leadership Award.
A lifelong Dallas-area resident, Mr. Rees-Jones has not rested on
the laurels of his oil industry successes. Rather he and his wife, Jan,
have seen them as a vehicle to help them minister to the underserved
people of North Texas.
Through the Trevor Rees-Jones Foundation, established in 2006,
the couple strives to share the love of Jesus Christ with those who
are disadvantaged or who are suffering spiritually, physically, or
emotionally. In particular, their foundation emphasizes assisting
children and their families who, because of circumstances beyond
their control, lack the opportunity or resources to improve their lives.
In honor of the mission and vision of the Rees-Jones Foundation,
the proceeds from the 2011 Folsom event will be used to support the
health system’s pastoral care ministries. In 2010 alone, Methodist’s
chaplains, seminarians, and religious laity of all faiths provided more
than 32,000 pastoral visits, and the health system provided more
than $82.6 million in unreimbursed charity care.
2011 Honorary Event Chairs President George W. and Laura Bush,
along with Event Chair James B. Francis Jr., joined hundreds of
supporters to honor Mr. Rees-Jones on Oct. 5 at a gala event in the
Hilton Anatole Hotel’s Grand Ballroom.

Methodist employees lend a helping hand to co-workers, community

You tend to the sick, evaluate lab and imaging
tests, care for babies, comfort families, and keep
the hospitals clean and efficient. Yet you, Methodist
Health System’s employees, still find it in your hearts
to support Methodist financially.
Hundreds of you belong to the 30-Minute Club
(30MC), donating 30 minutes of your salary per pay
period to support special projects at the hospital or
to the BEN (Basic Employee Need) Fund, which
distributes one-time grants to employees in times
of critical need.
Then in October, you kicked off the Give Like a Rock
Star! employee giving campaign, raising thousands
more dollars. This campaign was also a chance to
support United Way of Metropolitan Dallas, which
meets community health and human services needs
throughout the Metroplex.
It seems your generosity knows no bounds.
Consider how you helped Mike Duke, stationary engineer
at Methodist Dallas Medical Center for the past
27 years. A couple of years ago, esophageal cancer
treatment left him out of work for a year.
“My boss, Moe Fotoohi, went to the Methodist Foundation
and explained my situation,” Duke says. “The
BEN Fund stepped up, and I was able to pay some
bills and carry on till I got back to work. Even my
co-workers had taken up a collection.”
When Duke came back to work in January this year,
he decided to pay it forward and become a 30MC
member himself. Duke’s story also inspired other
co-workers to start contributing to the fund.
“I want to thank everyone who contributed to the
30-Minute Club,” Duke says. “It helped me more
than you know. I just hope that I can repay whoever
needs help next.”
Your kindness: A source of strength
Anh Meinschein, pharmacy technician at Methodist
Dallas, is equally grateful for the support she received.
In February 2010, a biopsy revealed that her husband,
Mark, had cirrhosis of the liver, a condition that left him
so weak that Mrs. Meinschein became the couple’s
sole provider. Six months later, her husband also
had a seizure and stroke and spent almost a week
in the hospital.
When an unexpected check from the BEN Fund
arrived in the mail, Mrs. Meinschein was moved
to tears, relieved to have help with finances.
“But the main thing is how it helped my spirit,” she
says. “I feel I’m not alone, and I feel that the hospital
really cares for me, and that helps me.”
Over time, Mr. Meinschein’s condition has worsened,
and he is now applying to get on a liver transplant list.
While his wife is concerned for his health, she remains
grateful for the support of those around her.
“I thank you, the BEN Fund, and everybody from the
bottom of my heart,” she says. “You give employees
comfort and hope during the most difficult times in
their lives.”
You make lasting impressions
Duke and Mrs. Meinschein both find it difficult to talk
about their stories, but their hope is that others will
be inspired to make a small sacrifice that makes a
great difference. Thank you to all employees whose
contributions led to such a successful employee giving
campaign and who set the example of generosity.

“Jesus observed how the crowd put money into the treasury.
Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came
and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his
disciples to himself, he said to them, ‘Amen, I say to you, this
poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the
treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth,
but she … has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood’”
(Mark 12:41-44).
Methodist Health System employees give in many ways, large
and small, but every contribution makes a difference. Here two
of Methodist’s joyful givers share why they choose to give.
Jorge Mariano
His co-workers simply call him “Mariano,” and he’s gotten so
used to it that he forgets to answer to Jorge. But Mariano
enjoys the camaraderie of his job, as well as the opportunity
it provides to serve.
The catering attendant at Methodist Dallas Medical Center
joined the 30-Minute Club (30MC) almost three years ago
and is hopeful that his contribution will make a difference for
someone at Methodist.
“I’m happy that this is helpful, that my contribution may help
for a little something,” he says. “I don’t know how the money
will be used, but my contribution is my heart — it’s in my heart
to be able to give. Maybe in the future, I can do a little more.”
Gladys Coleman
Gladys Coleman wants to fill in the gaps: If someone is in need
of help, she wants to be there to provide it. As a member of
the 30MC since she came to Methodist in 2003, Coleman
has been helping to fill in financial gaps for her co-workers in
need by contributing to the BEN Fund.
“I’m single and I don’t have any dependents, so I just decided
‘Why not give something to the club,’ the environmental
housekeeper at Methodist Dallas says. “I want to do something
to give back to my job because they’re so good to me. I want
you to know I love my job.”
Coleman encourages others to give as well, no matter how
small the gift.
“If you have just a couple of dollars, you can help somebody,”
she says. “Just do what you can.”

welcome to the foundation board
Ashlee H. Kleinert
Ashlee H. Kleinert lives to serve those who are
less fortunate.
She is co-founder of In Any Event Dallas, an eventplanning
business that specializes in events and
marketing for nonprofit organizations. She and
her husband, Chris, also founded the nonprofit
Executives in Action, which recruits executives
in transition to help nonprofit organizations with
high-impact projects the nonprofits otherwise could
not afford. And now she serves on the Methodist
Health System Foundation board, a move inspired
by hearing her mother, Nancy Ann Hunt, talk about
the “void that Methodist fills in our city.”
Owen is passionate about service-oriented
businesses. She owned and operated her own
restaurant from 1997 to 2001 and believes her
experience in serving others will enhance the
perspective she brings to the board. She also
hopes to serve as an advocate for the elderly in
her new role.
Currently a partner with E. F. Properties, LC, Owen
acts as an adviser to MedicalWorx, a medical staffing
company. She also serves on the New Friends
New Life advisory board and the Wind River Ranch
scholarship committee board.
She and her husband, Sean Owen, live in Dallas
and have six children.

“We’ve all got to lend a hand, and we’ve all got to
lift each other up,” Kleinert says. “I know it’s cliché,
but the stronger all of our agencies and foundations
are in our city, the stronger our city becomes.
“On the board, I hope to be a support and lend any
help I can in any area that’s needed.”

Legacy, faith, service — these are all words that
capture the essence of Julie Yarbrough’s work
both at Methodist Health System and throughout
the community.

Kleinert serves on the board of directors for the
Dallas Women’s Foundation, One Heart Project,
and Hope for the Heart ministries. She also serves
on the advisory boards of the Genesis Women’s
Shelter Alliance, New Friends New Life, CARE,
and Letot Girls’ Residential Treatment Center.
The Kleinerts have three young-adult children and
live in Dallas.
Traci Ford Owen
Oak Cliff was the childhood stomping ground of
Traci Ford Owen. Many of the Fords’ family friends
were associated with Methodist Dallas Medical
Center, and the hospital was where they turned for
their medical needs. Even after the family moved
across town, the Fords continued to support
the hospital.
“When I was asked to be on the board, I didn’t have
to think twice,” Owen says. She was impressed
with the health system’s growth and considered it
an honor to serve alongside those same people she
knew as a little girl back in Oak Cliff.
“I wanted to give back to a community that was
very important to me as a young child and thank
those doctors that were there for me and were
there to help our family over the years,” Owen says.
Since the death of her husband, the Rev. Leighton
K. Farrell, in 2004, Yarbrough has continued in his
spirit of commitment to high-quality health care
at Methodist in various roles. Currently, she serves
as chairwoman of the Methodist Health System
Foundation Golden Cross Division board of
trustees, which she joined in 2004. Since 2009,
she has shared her more than 30 years of experience
in business management and finance on the
health system board’s auditing, finance, and quality
review committees.
Yarbrough is the president of Yarbrough Investments
and the author of Peace of Mind: Financial
Management for Life. Other books to her credit are
Inside the Broken Heart: Grief Understanding for
Widows and Widowers and Modern Languages
for Musicians.
She is a longtime active member of Highland
Park United Methodist Church in Dallas. Currently
she serves on the executive board of the Perkins
School of Theology at Southern Methodist University.
Yarbrough says she aims for her service to reflect
faithful stewardship of life. “To me, that means
using the spiritual and physical resources entrusted
to my stewardship to further God’s kingdom here
on this earth,” she says.

Training technology prepares
medical residents
Some learn by seeing, but Methodist Dallas Medical
Center medical residents learn by doing. With the
new Simbionix GI Mentor TM , surgery, gastroenterology,
pulmonology, and internal medicine residents
are getting hands-on experience practicing not only
basic procedures but complicated ones as well.
And it’s the physicians on Methodist Dallas’
medical staff who’ve rallied to raise almost $80,000
to purchase this equipment for the graduate
medical education skills simulation lab.
“It gives residents more autonomy in the operating
room, because they have practiced that same
procedure on a simulator 50 times before coming
into the operating room itself,” says Michael Truitt, MD,
an independently practicing surgeon on the medical
staff at Methodist Dallas and medical director
of the skills simulation lab, who led the fundraising
campaign. “This equipment improves patient
safety, it improves residency education, and it
improves efficiency.
“We felt like it was important enough that it would
make a significant statement if we put our time and
money toward this goal.”

later with $10,000 gift
Each year, your generosity does something remarkable:
It allows Methodist Health System to never
close its doors to a patient in need regardless of
ability to pay. In the last year, Methodist contributed
$82.6 million in charity care for people who could
not afford essential services.
Fifteen years ago, Seuk-Pyo “Francisco” Hong was
one of those patients benefiting from charity care.
On Dec. 2, 1996, the then-21-year-old from Korea
was in a car accident here in Dallas. He was taken
to the emergency department at Methodist Dallas
Medical Center, where he spent 45 days in the
intensive care unit in a coma resulting from a head
injury he sustained in the accident.
After he came out of the coma, Hong was transferred
to another hospital to recover and for
physical therapy.
“I was a university student at that time, so I couldn’t
pay any money for my care,” he writes in a letter to
the Foundation. “That was always on my mind.
“Now I am 35 years old and I am doing well. I work
… and saved some money to pay you back.”
Hong never forgot the hospital that worked to save
his life even when he couldn’t pay for the care. This
year, he said thank you with a generous donation to
the Foundation.
“I am Catholic, so I always pray to the Lord for
giving me the second life after that accident,” he
writes. “The donation is not everything I owed to
Him and your hospital, but I liked to pay back a
little money by giving you the donation.
“I hope you can help someone like me with that.”
