opened the 6 th meeting of the <strong>Global</strong><br />

Direc<strong>to</strong>r General, and Dr Lorenzo Savioli,<br />

(WPR) of the World<br />

Health Organization<br />

(WHO), thanked the<br />

government of Korea for<br />

hosting the meeting and welcomed the<br />

participants. She highlighted the<br />

substantial physical and psychological<br />

burdens of LF and noted progress in<br />

developing effective labora<strong>to</strong>ry <strong>to</strong>ols and<br />

public-private partnerships <strong>to</strong> eliminate<br />

LF. Several countries in the WPR appear <strong>to</strong><br />

be close <strong>to</strong> eliminating LF and others have<br />

made substantial progress. Dr Tee called<br />

upon the GAELF <strong>to</strong> assist Papua New<br />

Guinea in mobilizing the financial and<br />

technical resources necessary <strong>to</strong> eliminate<br />

LF.<br />

496 million. The strength of the GAELF lies<br />

in its members, each with a different<br />

mandate, but all sharing the same goal. Dr<br />

Engels reviewed some of GAELF’s<br />

successes and reiterated<br />

WHO’s full support. He<br />

emphasized that MDA for<br />

LF elimination should be<br />

thoroughly integrated with<br />

preventive chemotherapy<br />

for neglected tropical<br />

diseases (NTDs). He<br />

thanked GlaxoSmithKline<br />

(GSK) and Merck & Co., Inc.<br />

for their continued commitment <strong>to</strong><br />

provide antifilarial drugs, free of charge,<br />

for as long as necessary. He encouraged<br />

the meeting participants <strong>to</strong> celebrate the<br />

successes already achieved and noted that<br />

the LF elimination programme already has<br />

been successful in improving the health of<br />

millions of poor people.<br />

On behalf of the delegates <strong>to</strong> the 6 th<br />

GAELF, Professor David Molyneux,<br />

Executive Secretary of the Executive<br />

Group, GAELF, extended his thanks <strong>to</strong> the<br />

Korean hosts of the meeting, and noted<br />

the significance of holding the meeting in<br />

a country that has successfully eliminated<br />
