Hilary and Rob of Emmaus Cheltenham
a unique approach to homelessness
Tucked down Henrietta Street,
behind the Brewery the Emmaus
Charity Shop might look like any
other, selling furniture, bric a brac
and clothing. But did you know that
this shop is part of an international
movement that has a UNIQUE
approach to homelessness?
Emmaus Gloucestershire is one of 26
communities in the UK providing homeless
people with a place to live and work.
The shop in Cheltenham is one of four in
Gloucestershire that supports 23 formerly
homeless people, called companions. It is
UNIQUELY staffed - in return for board and
lodging companions give up the right to state
benefits and work 40 hours in the shops and
furniture warehouse.
We have a UNIQUE way of using the surplus
that we generate – we give it to others
who need it more than we do. This can be
local charities, individual families in need,
and international aid projects. Currently we
are supporting homelessness services in
Gloucestershire and several projects in India.
It’s not about the money we generate and
the excellent shops we provide in four
communities, it is about changing lives.
We have believe that in helping others we
help ourselves, and that meaningful work
restores dignity and inclusion in society.
The perception of people who are homeless
is that they are a drain on society, but the
residents of Emmaus Communities turn this
perception on its head. Not only do they work
to support themselves, but they also work to
help others.
It is a UNIQUE and successful business
run much like a co-operative. All goods
are donated and are sold on at low prices
with a high turnover of stock. We don’t
sell new goods or pay for our stock. The
people of Gloucestershire generously give
their unwanted goods and larger items are
collected free of charge. Emmaus rarely
says no to goods offered and we dispose of
the things we can’t sell in way that doesn’t
damage the environment – last year we
saved 415 tonnes from landfill.
It is a UNIQUE business and successful
business model. In 2011 UK research
(Just Economics) forecast a Social Return
on investment (SROI) of £11 for every £1
invested. The savings to taxpayers for every
companion living and working at Emmaus
Gloucestershire is calculated to be £47,442.
The first Emmaus Companion, living with
the founder Abbé Pierre in 1948 in France
helped to build temporary homes for those
in need, first in the priest’s own garden,
then wherever land could be bought or
scrounged. He later said; “Whatever else
he might have given me - money, home,
somewhere to work - I’d have still tried to kill
myself again. What I was missing, and what
he offered, was something to live for.”
It’s UNIQUE – but it works! It works because
companions work 40 hours a week to make
us independent and surplus generating. It
works because the people of Cheltenham
and Gloucestershire provide us with the
goods to sell and come and buy from us.
Most importantly it works because we work
for others and make a difference to lives
home and abroad.
Remembering Good Times,
Accepting Tough Times too:
Memory Stones
A simple bag of three stones may be a useful way to have a
really meaningful conversation with your children and help them
to find a way of coping with all sorts of memories. Sometimes
it can be hard to find a balance between the difficult memories
which are often associated with a death by murder or manslaughter
and happier, more positive memories. The three
different stones can be used to convey a message in a special
and safe way.
The smooth pebble feels ordinary and fairly comfortable to hold in your hand. It is there to represent ordinary,
everyday memories of the person who died.
He always rang the doorbell when he came home from work even though he had a key.
She always sang along with the adverts when they came on the TV.
The rough rock feels sharp and painful to hold. It is there to represent the memories of difficult and hard
times and also memories of the way that the person died.
I remember some of the rows we had; we said some hurtful things to each other.
When I close my eyes I can still see the picture in my head of how she must have looked.
The gemstone looks and feels precious, shiny and polished. It is there to bring back memories of the
really special times spent with the person who died.
I’ll never forget that day on the beach when he tried to catch the frisbee in his mouth and got a face full
of sand. He couldn’t stop laughing.
I remember making a birthday cake in the shape of a car with her; it didn’t really look like a car but we
thought it was brilliant.
The first two stones can usually be found in a garden or park. Gemstones can be found at craft or gift
shops. Encourage your children to hold each stone in turn and give examples of memories and events
that they could attach to the different stones. You can also share your own.
The secret is to try to find a way to hold the three stones in your hand – the rough alongside the precious
and the ordinary – and to hold these three types of memories together in a way that they all find their
place. The rough becomes no more important than the other two and in time can be described in ways
that hurt less.
Using this simple bag of stones can help break the conspiracy of silence that sometimes creeps in when
tough stuff happens in families. When having a difficult day, the stones can also be a useful way to start
a conversation, for example:
Does the rough rock feel particularly sharp today?
Everyman Theatre
Will Harvey’s War
F.W. Harvey was born in
Gloucestershire in 1888 and
is one of the most popular UK
war poets, writing powerful
poems through his own
experiences of the Great War.
The Everyman Theatre have
been given exclusive access
to an unpublished novel by
Harvey called Will Harvey’s
War to mark 100 years since
the start of World War 1.
The Everyman Theatre on Regent Street
Cheltenham presented their own production
of Will Harvey’s War at the beginning of
August, with four of the theatres professional
actors & actresses and in addition the help
of local volunteer actors and sponsors.
Magically they created the romantic story of
Gloucestershire and the battle of the Somme.
After a year in the planning, this performance
was ready to be the official launch of
Gloucestershire Remembers World War 1.
Amazingly this romantic story of survival and
escape was absolutely brilliantly adapted
for the stage. It showcases the deep
adjournments of Harvey’s mind, and the
dark places he observed and experienced.
Paul Milton the director wanted to create
an exploration story from the unpublished
works instead of a memoir of Harvey’s
experiences. However Milton has kept the
truth in the story, such as his brothers loss of
life during the war and the capturing by the
Germans to the Prison Camp, you are able
to comprehend life in this time. The fictional
part of the production is the romance with a
gypsy girl.
The play starts with Will as a young
boy, growing up in Gloucestershire and
attempting poetry. Forward a few years
later were Will is now a solicitor in a town
far from home and up North, gloomy and
unlike the characters dream. War is then
declared and Will and his brother Eric are
called up. However the story then focuses on
the love story between Will and a gypsy girl
who he had met years before when home in
Gloucestershire. She has disguised herself
as a man and joined the army unbeknown
joining him on the front. Their journey of
escape is gripping the edge of your seat
journey across the borders, finally they are
free and homeward bound for the romance
to final come to the end.
The performance contained elegant dancing
and music that packed a punch at the
moments most powerful. The Everyman’s
Community Choirs joined the Cheltenham
Silver Band to craft music such as Holst’s
Mars to Pack Up Your Troubles.
Will Harvey’s War will be undertaking
creative residences in Primary Schools
across Gloucestershire over 10 weeks in the
autumn. The Everyman should be proud of
this wonderful performance.
Nick & Chloe Gazzard
appear on This Morning
Nick and Chloe appeared on ITV’s this
morning program to talk about Hollie and
the work that the Trust is doing. Having
traveled up on the Tuesday evening, Nick,
Chloe and Mandy arrived at the ITV studios
at 8:30 on Wednesday and taken straight
to the Green Room. Nick and Chloe were
then taken into the make up room where
make was applied to them both and Chloe
had her hair done. Back to the Green
room to sit with the other guests and
celebrities including Dr Dawn Harper from
Embarrassing Bodies and Jenny Faulkner.
After a brief chat with the Assistant
producer it was time to walk to the main
studio room and sit on the sofa. Presenting
were Eamon and Ruth who greeted
us and chatted while the adverts were
on. They were both very charming and
understanding and very professional.
Eamon even gave Mandy a big hug off
camera. Time then came for the 11 minute
interview on Hollie and the work of the Trust
and the rest is history as they say.
It was a great opportunity to speak live on
TV and one that all three of us thoroughly
enjoyed. Bring on the next one!!! Hopefully,
with many tweets being made and ITV
having a link to the Trust site from there
website will bring many more people into
contact with the Trust and highlight its aims.
Vintage Shopping Tips
Following the success of Dawn Porter’s Channel 4 series This Old Thing Vintage
Clothes Show, the love of vintage as rocketed. Dawn’s message is simple, forget the
High Streets throw away fashion and get back to the thinking of there is still life in
this old thing.
Shopping for vintage isn’t easy, you need patience and not going into it with
something particular in mind. If vintage scares you because it size confusing and
moth holed pieces do not panic this is the beauty of vintage.
Sarah Mckew
Fashion & Features Editor
© Sarah McKew 2014
So I give you my top tips for vintage shopping...
1. Sizing – The sizing is completely different now,
to then. It’s best to just try on and ignore the
labels, women were smaller. I am a size 8 but I fit
in 60s/70s size 12 and a size 14 in 1950s.
2. Check the garments – Some vintage shops
can be dark and crowded, make sure you
hold the garment up to the light to check for
holes and repairs needed. Check the armpits,
before the days of deodorant sweat damaged
fabric to the acid in perspiration….gross I hear
you say……yes indeed but a good quality
dry cleaners can rectify smells and stains. It’s
also important to check the buttons and zips.
However you can update pieces with changing
the buttons if some are missing. Anything that is
missing its ok to ask for a reduction in the price.
3. Shoes are tricky – Lots of vintage places
will admit it’s difficult getting shoes. Shoe sizes
were smaller…however if you are lucky enough
to find the perfect pair it is important to always
check the bottom of the shoes. Check the
leather around the buckles and straps, these
may break easily. In some cases the sole can
be reinforced but this can be expensive.
4. Don’t be scared to head to the Fitting Room
– Vintage items can look bizarre and bright or
lack hanger appeal, but try it, you don’t know
until you do! Have fun doing so and you might
be pleasantly surprised. Open mind…
5. Talk to the Assistants….If you are looking for
era specific pieces talk to these guys who can
help and advise. They should know their stock
inside and out, but its also an opportunity to
make a friendship where they can keep special
pieces behind for you.
6. It’s not just Vintage Shops – Charity shops
are also a great place to pick up classic pieces.
But you have to know your labels…and I don’t
mean names. The main thing to look for is the
Made in Britain label and washing label! If there
is no washing or care instruction this is pre
1970s! The big give away is the date on the
label…or the RN number this is started in the
50s, you can look online the RN number to find
out how old the garment is.
7. Have a Kit….when I say Kit I mean go
prepared. Know your measurements and go
with a tape measure. It will save a lot of flapping
in the changing rooms! Have a waist belt in
your kit, it’s miraculous the difference when
garments are pinched in. Most importantly a
smile…for when you need those discounts.
Smokey Joe’s
Smokey Joes is a family run business
with a difference. It provides retro &
vintage entertainment, pop culture and
great coffee! The business spans across
three generations supplying game
machines, Props and all things Retro
American.
Any Cheltonians remember Smokey Joes
has the gaming arcade where they spent
most of their childhood and teenage years
with friends. But recently Smokey Joes
re-opened their doors to give Cheltenham
a Vintage Coffee Bar. Where ever you look
you notice something new and cool of days
gone by.
They serve great coffee, American waffles,
bagels and Milkshakes all day, but why
not have an afternoon tea party? My
friend turned 29 again and the best way to
celebrate this birthday was Smokey Joes
Afternoon Tea party, which provided more
food than the 15 of us could eat!
It doesn’t stop there, they host regular
events including Vintage and Craft fairs
and workshops. I can’t wait until their next
Vintage Fair on Sunday 7th September from
11am until 4pm.
Smokey Joe’s
So for all you vintage lovers and if you just
want to go back in time, this is the place to be.
Beauty
This month as I am all vintage inspired I decided to try the Classic Beauty Products of old that
we remember on our Mothers and Grandma’s dressing tables. These are still on our shelves to
purchase, and keep the Iconic beauty secrets alive. Sometimes the Old Classics are the best!
Ponds Cold Cream Cleanser – Boots £4.99
This is a classic creamy cleanser has been around since
1907. It doesn’t dry your skin yet removes all make up
even waterproof mascara. My skin felt smooth and not tight
after the first use and was pleasantly surprised how much
cleaner my skin looked. With celebrities such as Kylie who
used this old classic, it’s a traditional cleanser that is still
going strong.
Corn Silk Satin Loose Powder – £8.16
Grandma’s favourite and best seller on Amazon is this
amazing loose face powder. This product is amazing giving
a natural colour and great coverage. It’s even been used
as a Pre-Selfie powder by the Daily Mail.
Revlon Nail Varnish Boots – £6.49
Amazingly Revlon has been a beauty must have since the
1930s and who else makes nail varnish with a matching
lipstick? Sure its another red nail varnish but the classic
red colour is a perfect staple for your nail collection. It
didn’t chip and as promised it gave me 10 days of lasting
colour and was easy to paint smoothing away bubbles and
imperfections. I was very impressed
Great Lash Mascara by Maybelline – £4.99
Maybelline created their first mascara in 1917, however
their iconic mascara Great Lash hit our beauty bags in the
1970s and it is still a best seller worldwide. It thickened my
lashes and was flake free, it was easy to remove too.
Elnett Satin Hair Spray – £6.70
Every girl knows this one, but this well-known gold can of classic hairspray holds
hair for an immaculate look. Introduced into the UK in the 1960s this was the
hair spray on most mothers dressing tables that girls will be remember, even the
scent remains unchanged.
UNIQUE Cheltenham Sport
Review on Cheltenham
Pre-season predictions are seldom much to go
by in football, but Mark Yates and his coaching
staff would have nailed this picture (below) on the
wall before their campaign started in League 2.
FourFourTwo predicted Yates’ men to finish
bottom of the table, it differed to my prediction
of a top half finish - also in the August edition of
FourFourTwo.
Nonetheless, it was a summer upheaval; many
players who ended the 2013/2014 in a Robins
shirt are no longer at Whaddon Road, with Yates
bringing in several signings over the summer to
start a new and mould a new squad at Whaddon
Road.
So far so good for Yates and his Cheltenham
Town side – in four games played so far this
season, the Robins remain unbeaten – winning
their first game away at Bury 1-0; 2-1 in their first
home game of the season against Accrington
Stanley, 0-0 against Carlisle United and in their
last away game, Yates’ side came from two-nil
down to win 3-2 against Tranmere Rovers at
Prenton Park.
The summer re-moulding has involved match
winning performances from the majority of the
summer signings, including their new goalkeeper
and attacking players.
Robins legend Scott Brown moved to Scottish
Premier League side Aberdeen, the goalkeeper
position had to be filled, resulting in Yates opting
for Trevor Carson from Bury. The 26-year old has
already made an impact in between the sticks,
keeping two clean-sheets in four league games
and making a host of brilliant saves to keep
Cheltenham Town in the game against all four
sides they have played this campaign. His save
from Bury’s Jason Poole in the dying minutes of
the game got the Robins off to the perfect start,
and has since kept up his fine form – helping
the Robins start their season unbeaten in four
games.
page 32
Town F.C “The Robins”
New additions Koby Arthur and Jordan Wynter
have both netted for the Robins. Koby Arthur
arrived from Birmingham City in July on loan until
January 2015, and rewarded Mark Yates for the
faith he has placed on him with a home debut
goal against Accrington Stanley, which turned out
to be the winner.
Cheltenham Town’s latest signing, 20-year old
Jordan Wynter arrived from ex-Robins boss
Steve Cotterill’s side Bristol City last Thursday,
and, like his fellow new team-mates Koby
Arhur, Wynter netted the winner on his debut for
Cheltenham in their 3-2 away win at Tranmere
Rovers.
While Robins fans are undoubtedly delighted
with their team’s start to the season, there will be
modest approach to their sides fortunes, it can’t
last for the next 42 games… or can it? They face
two home games in the league and cup in the
next week – hopefully we can keep on dreaming
for just a little longer.
