Chronic diarrhoea <strong>in</strong> a returned traveller<br />

Good answer. The second cyst is Entamoeba coli (Mature Entamoeba coli cysts typically have<br />

8 nuclei, and measure usually 15 to 25 µm (range 10 to 35 µm). E. coli is the only<br />

species of Entamoeba with more than four nuclei <strong>in</strong> the cyst stage. Chromatoid bodies<br />

are seen less frequently than <strong>in</strong> E. histolytica ) (Images from CDC, website l<strong>in</strong>k below)<br />

Mature Entamoeba histolytica/Entamoeba dispar cysts have 4 nuclei that characteristically<br />

have centrally located karyosomes and f<strong>in</strong>e, uniformly distributed peripheral<br />

chromat<strong>in</strong>. Cysts usually measure 12 to 15 µm. E. dispar is non-<strong>in</strong>vasive, but<br />

morphologically identical to E. histolytica which is associated with <strong>in</strong>vasive disease of<br />

which colitis and amoebic liver abscess are the commonest manifestations.<br />
