micro/culture is <strong>in</strong>dicated due to the air travel.<br />

Campylobacter spp are still the commonest cause of bloody stools <strong>in</strong><br />

patients.<br />

Clostridium difficile should be actively screened for, as the patient<br />

was a recent hospital <strong>in</strong>patient, and given the <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>cidence<br />

of severe disease caus<strong>in</strong>g C. difficile serotypes <strong>in</strong>ternationally (yet<br />

to be seen <strong>in</strong> Australia).<br />

Shiga tox<strong>in</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g E. coli are also a known cause of haemorrhagic<br />

diarrhoea and should be excluded if considered likely.
