Hollie Gazzard Anniversary
4 5
Hundreds of people gathered in support Hollie Gazzard’s family at the memorial
service to mark the first anniversary of Hollie’s death. Those attending
included the Police and paramedics who were first on the scene along
with the whole Police investigating team.
funeral. This was followed by a minutes
silence at 6.51, the exact time
that Hollie passed away. Despite
the tears, Hollies dad wanted those
attending to remember the happy
times and the positive work that the
Trust was now doing as a great legacy
to Hollie.
Flowers were laid and candles lit outside the Fringe Benefits Salon in Southgate
Street where Hollie’s life was tragically cut short. The service was
opened by Ellie Higgs singing Bruno Mars hit ‘Just The Way You Are’, the
song that Hollie’s coffin entered the Cathedral to a year ago.
Hollie’s father Nick addressed the hundreds of people attending stating that
“It is sad Hollie is not here but tonight is about celebrating her life and the
last 20 years. A year ago events changed our lives forever, which we will
never get over. We have all had different strategies with how to cope with
it. Hollie was very fun loving and had lots of dreams. She was only here for
20 years but she packed more in that 20 years than most people do in a
lifetime. She travelled and had seven roles in hairdressing in different parts
of the country, including the cruise liner she worked on. She made an enormous
amount of friends.”
Reverend Canon Neil Heavisides from Gloucester Cathedral then praised
the Gazzard family for setting
an example by setting up the
Trust and helping others. He
said. “There are three people
we would all like to thank and
that is Nick, Mandy and Chloe
for setting an example, the way
they have built on Hollie’s life
and are trying to improve the
lives of others.”
The family invited everyone back to
the King Teddy in Longlevens where
Hollie worked to enjoy one of her
Cocktails.
The service was ended by Ellie
Higgs singing Diamonds by Rhianna.
Ellie said: “I was honoured to sing at
the service. It was incredibly emotional,
I was a little nervous
because there were so many
people, but it went well.”
The Trust raised £85,000
last year and they supported
the funding of 4 hairdressers
at Gloucestershire College,
financing the cost of
youth workers at increase
the Peace and supporting the
delivery of healthy relationship
workshops in a number
of senior schools through GDASS. This year they have a number of new
projects and initiatives that they want to run costing £250,000.
Prayers were then said by the
former St Johns Churchdown reverend Katy Morgan, who spoke at Hollie’s
I was referred to LNH Management Solutions when
looking to setup a new business venture. I’ve been very
pleased with the time Lee initially spent with me advising
on the business structure and helping with all of the
necessary set-up and registration requirements. Since
this, Lee regularly keeps contact to ensure the business is
running smoothly and has always been available to offer
his support in a personal and approachable manner. I’ve
been highly impressed with his services and would have
no hesitation in recommending him to other small businesses.
project management is excellent, her
They know their customers are in
Dear Chris and Caroline, Thank you again for the
outstanding service. As you know, I had a specific
idea in mind which had some unusual features.
I did not feel confident that the first company I
approached could achieve the design I wanted
after their repeated failure to provide a drawing
to my specifications. In contrast you provided the
drawing I needed quickly and efficiently which,
together with your professional and caring
approach, left me in no doubt about placing an
order with you. My mother and I are delighted
with the stone, and I know my father would have
liked it. It’s funny but it seems so appropriate for
him, with its height, slim width and stylish
features. I hope I can equal your high standards
in the small planting area in front of the stone
with my flowers.
You both do such an important job and you do it
extremely well.
3. Prepare. Most networking meetings have an introductions round - at
Stef Thomas
12 4Networking we call it the 40 Second round. This is your opportunity to 13
engage with the other people in the room. Prepare it like you would any
Five ways to kickstart your networking
other marketing material. Write it down and, even better, record it on your
smartphone to make sure it is the right length and that it sounds like you.
in 2015
You wouldn’t “wing it” with any of your other marketing material. Don’t do it
here.
Do you get a lot of success from your business networking? Or do you go along
and are never sure how to make it “work” for you?
Do you watch the people who are making networking work for them and wonder
what they do differently? This month, Stefan Thomas, author of Business
Networking for Dummies gives us his ideas on five changes we can make when
networking
1. You have to be there, regularly. If you make only one change to your networking
in 2015 then
do this. Plan your networking activity and be
there. Don’t think you can only turn up once or
twice
a year when you need to make some sales.
You’re expecting people to want to buy when
you
want to sell. Life doesn’t work that way round.
Think about the furniture stores which advertise
on telly. You know, the ones who have had
a sale
on since sometime in 1975! Why do you think
they keep advertising week in week out? They
have to be there at the moment when you
start thinking of buying new sofa.
They don’t just pop up when they need to
make some sales and neither should you.
Be there
consistently. Then you will be there when
someone in the room needs your product
or service.
2. Arrive with positive intent. What are
you intending to get from this networking
meeting? Are you approaching the meeting
positively? Or are you just turning up and hoping for the best? At the very
least turn up with a smile and enjoy the experience. I’m always amazed when
people turn up to networking meetings with a face like a smacked arse and then
wonder why everyone else responds in the same manner.
4. ALWAYS follow up. What happens when you leave the networking meeting?
You check your ‘phone. Wonder why you’ve got a missed call from your
child’s school, wonder why your best client has
Emailed you and realise you’re now running late
for your next call. In short, you start to forget the
conversations you had. And everyone else is the
same. So you have the opportunity to be the one
who stands out by always remembering to follow
up. Call the people you have met and arrange to
have a second, longer conversation with them.
Don’t wait for them to come to you.
5. Join up your networking with social media. You
don’t “get” Twitter or LinkedIn? Tough. It’s too late
to pretend that social media isn’t going to affect
business. You have the opportunity to be regularly
in touch with your prospects on social media. You have the opportunity
to remind them of your expertise. You have the opportunity to be there at
exactly the moment when they realise they need your service. The things
is, your competitors have that opportunity too. You may be better at what
you do than your competitors. But they are better at keeping in touch on
social media. Learnhow to use it properly. Find someone in your networking
group who can help you. But don’t pretend you can do without it. The
world is joined up online now and the people who are truly benefitting are
those who realise that face to face relationships are even more important
than ever. Those who join up their real life and virtual relationships build
the strongest connections and the most mutually profitable networking.
ADDICTED AND RECOVERING
16 17
One persons story from adiction and the road
to recovery
I started gambling when I was 17 years old...
...I was attending GlosCol in Cheltenham and got friendly with a lad who liked
the odd bet on horses and football. My
gambling carried on normally into my first
employed job where I could pop to
the bookies a few times a week to bet on
horses, again this was on £1 or £2.
Over the next few months something
started to click in my head that this was
easy money and the bets slowly started
to increase from £2 to £5 per bet and also
gambling every day in addition to having
extended lunch breaks and skiving parts
of the afternoon. I then managed to get a
different job which was well paid and then
the my life and gambling started to become unmanageable as I was well and
truly Addicted. I would skive off work to go to racing events at Cheltenham or go
to the bookies...I would also go to
the bookies when I should of been
managing a business. Addicts
have to lie to cover their tracks so
loved ones do not know what you
are getting upto. Addiction is very
much about pleasure, pain and
the lie’s that you tell yourself and
others every day it really is like being
on a Hamsters wheel..circle of
addiction with no way out...or so I
thought.
in the direction of a Self Help group
for Gamblers, slowly but surely my
life started to improve as I was given
some new life skills to help stop me
gambling. As the years went by I
relapsed a couple of times but now I
have been clean for a good period of
time, I now work on my recovery and
try to help other compulsive gamblers
do the same. Whatever your
addiction there is always a
way to start again, my future is now
what I make of it :)
If you think you need help or you
know of someone else with a
gambling addiction then for more
information visit :
www.gamblersanonymous.org.uk
I would be telling elborate lies to
my girlfriend of the time or starting
arguments so I could go gambling...
gambling was my life and everything
else had to fit round it. You have
moments of clarity where you realise
you need help and need to stop
but then you end up stealing or
manipulating someone to get money
once your own funds dried up.
After several crisis points in my life I
called Gamcare and they pointed me
Unique Food...... Racks Bar & Kitchen
So for our first Unique Food Review we choose the lovely Racks Bar &
Kitchen on St Pauls Road in the heart of Clifton. The Restaurant itself is
lovely decorated with a funky but elegant vibe going on, with a mixture
of students and Clifton residents. We got ourselves a couple of drinks
and surveyed the Menu...what jumped off the page was Home Made
Brief Intro by Racks
Steak & Kidney Pie for myself and
the Mrs(@Dusky210) choose Home
Made Chicken Pie.
Searching for a new favourite restaurant in Clifton? Look no further than
Racks Bar and Kitchen. As Clifton restaurants go, we have a huge variety of
food on offer: from the famous Racks Burgers and Racks Pies to our super
salads – not forgetting the
best Sunday Roasts in Bristol!
With lunches starting at
£5 you can’t go wrong with
our fresh, made to order
menu.
The core principles behind
all of our food are: freshness,
provenance, taste
and quality.
As a restaurant in Clifton,
we feel it is our duty to
make the most of the fantastic ingredients on our doorstep where possible
sourcing locally from the West Country. Our relationship with local butchers,
greengrocers, bakers and fishmongers ensures we have the finest produce
around.
After a short wait but not too long
our drinks were ready and we
looked forward to our meals, we
cast our eyes over other customers
food coming out and we were impressed.
Then out came the food
and wow what a treat both pies were homemade and looked exactly
that.
The Pies were surrounded with gorgeous veg and was well presented by
the chef and now it was done to the tasting and boy were we impressed
the meat was lovely and tender with loads of it and the vegetables were
cooked to perfection and we couldn’t believe how big the pies were.
Conclusions
Lovely surroundings and buzzy atmosphere
We both agreed that it was the best Home Made Pies we have ever had,
check out Pie Wednesday as only £5 per pie.
Really Impressive Restaurant and will be back again :)
28 29
Waiting for Ash and Dom outside
Starbucks on a Sunny Sunday morning.
Im approached by a back flip in the air
and a perfect landing in front of me. I will
need more than coffee to keep up with
these guys.
Ash 24 and Dom 24 started free running at
the age of 12 whilst at school, after been told
by the school to stop it they didn’t start again
until they were 19 and Dom was shooting
photography for a college project. Following
watching Jump Britain they decided to
practice and take this up as a hobby, but the
hobby turned into lifestyle for them both.
So what’s Free Running? Free Running is the
art of expressing yourself without limitations
of movement. The philosophy behind it is
to express yourself fluidly. It was started
by Sebastien Foucan who used martial
discipline and added acrobatic movements to
it. It has become a few international events
such as the Red Bull Art of Motion and used
in the popular video game Assassin’s Creed.
Now they are teaching in Cheltenham, Stroud
and Bristol with an age range of 8 – 46. ‘Kids
are always jumping and climbing, it’s natural.
But there is more too it’
You will see Ash and Dom between Stroud
Rush skate Park and Rush in Bristol. They
discovered the Bristol Park and later found
it burnt as an act of vandalism, since the
rebuilding and the session’s available
crime as dropped by 60% in the area. ‘The
biggest reward is seeing someone achieve
something new’ the guys speak passionately
about the community and how Free Running
is now a family to them. ‘As its community
based, everyone should get involved’ it’s
always been about getting people involved
and getting the rewards. It’s a chance to
release and learn about yourself. You learn
from yourself and each other. It’s not all
physical it is about friendships.
Dom continues to explain that ‘Most of the
people involved have had family issues or
problems within their lives, with the groups
they become family and people start to come
outof their shell, you then start to have a
different outlook on life.’
So what are their sessions like, Ash explains
that they can train for 4 hours and meet
up with different people and learn 10 new
moves in an hour. ‘Come rain or shine, we
adapt to the environment. We experience
different things and new places give new
ideas. It could be a different surface or
texture. The architecture can change
everything.’
When I ask the guys what is your favourite
place in Cheltenham to practice they cant tell
me but you will often see them in Montpellier
Park around the band stand. So I wonder
how to do the locals and the police feel about
this? ‘We get on well with the Police, they
know that we are respectable and we did
shock them because we are polite and make
conversation instead of giving them grief as
most do’ The police have a good relationship
and understand the group and encourage
them with their development.
The future for Dom and Ash are clear they
want
to teach in schools and get better awareness.
They are starting promo videos to show
training and learning. ‘It’s not just all about
the performance’ Its not a competitive sport,
unfortunately it will be commercial. But have
to ensure people don’t lose the passion.’
the children to act as messengers between you and your spouse. Divorce
is a difficult enough time as it is for the children however, if they have a set
routine and know when they will be spending time with each parent, this
can make it easier for them. Never make negative comments about your
spouse to the children or in their hearing as even with very small children,
this can leave them feeling confused and upset.
TOP TIPS ON AN AMICABLE DIVORCE
The Family Law team at John Hodge Solicitors has been guiding clients
through divorce and separation with over 70 years combined experience
and knows that divorce brings with it inevitable pain and heartache. However,
if you and your spouse can put aside animosity and keep a level
head, there is no reason why you cannot approach the process in an amicable
way. We have used our experience to put together these tips on how
to achieve an amicable divorce:
1. Keep the channels of communication open.
Your first instinct after deciding to issue divorce proceedings might be to
cut off your spouse from every aspect of your life. If you are looking for
an amicable divorce this is not the way to go about it. It is preferable to let
your spouse know that you are open to all forms of communication and
that you are happy to discuss matters with them.
2. Obtain your financial records.
Start to collect your financial details, by way of twelve months’ bank statements,
your last three months’ wage slips, details of your pension etc. your
solicitor will want to see this information as early as possible. Money and
finances are perhaps the biggest stumbling block during divorce proceedings
and the earlier you and your spouse are able to discuss such issues in
an open and honest way the better it will be for everyone in the long term.
3. If you have children together.
Make plans with your spouse as soon as possible as to how the children
will be cared for after separation. This will probably mean that the children
will spend some time in each parent’s new home. Accepting that due
to the practical realities of life, balancing work commitments, school and
after school activities this time may not be divided exactly equally is important.
As soon as an agreement is reached, stick to it. Do not turn up late if
you are collecting the children from the other parent without explaining
to your spouse beforehand and, under no circumstances should you use
4. Keep an open mind. It is important that during this difficult time you
keep an open mind when negotiating with your spouse. Problems arise
when either or both parties become entrenched in positions and refuse to
compromise. Obtaining legal advice early on in your separation can help
you to be realistic about your expectations during divorce and separation
particularly as regards the financial outcomes.
5. Tell the truth.
This is an absolute must in all matters financial, or you may find yourself
being penalised by the court. Truth in all matters, even if it hurts, is by far
the best policy. If you try to hide things and your spouse finds out, they will
be unlikely to want to reach an early settlement.
6. Be empathetic.
Everybody goes through various emotional stages during a divorce, be it
anger, sadness bitterness etc but not necessarily at the same time. If your
spouse seems to be finding things tough at a time when you are feeling
fine, give them some time and they will catch you up. Trying to force people
into a situation that they are not yet ready for can be cruel and unlikely
to bring about agreements in important matters.
7. Choose your legal advice wisely.
It is important that you employ the right solicitor to help you through this
difficult process. Our Family team at John Hodge Solicitors are all experienced
in all areas of Family law. All our team are members of Resolution
and are dedicated to helping you to achieve an amicable divorce and guiding
you through the pitfalls of a very difficult period in your life.
Our Family team offer an initial free
So here we are on 23rd February with Steve Cotterill’s Robins still flying high in 1st
place and looking like they are there to stay. Bristol lost Away to Colchester United
3 – 2 Tom Lapslie’s first senior goal helped move Colchester out of the relegation
zone as they beat leaders Bristol City. The 19-year-old gave the hosts the lead on
three minutes after goalkeeper Frank Fielding spilt Elliott Hewitt’s cross. Macauley
Bonne’s header doubled their advantage and Chris Porter added a third before the
break. Goals from City pair James Tavernier and Aden Flint set up a tense finish,
but the hosts hung on for a valuable three points. Tavernier’s 50th-minute cross
eluded Sam Walker to give City a glimmer of hope before centre-back Flint headed
in his second goal in two games, but Steve Cotterill’s side fell to their second defeat
inside a week. The result sees Colchester move out of the bottom four for the
first time since November, while City’s lead at the top of League One is cut to two
points. Bristol City manager Steve Cotterill told BBC Radio Bristol:
“It was two halves. The first half we didn’t turn up. It was a shocking pitch and
we got the ball pinched off us a couple of times. “We ended up being 2-0 down
and then before we knew where we were a third went in. “It was a horrible pitch.
You couldn’t play football on it but that’s no excuse, really. “We should have been
brighter than that, but we weren’t.” The next six fixtures will decide if The Robins
can secure first place, conserving they are seven points clear of third place. The
main games look like Gillingham in 11th Place on 14th March and also the massive
game against Walsall on Sunday 22nd March an epic end to the season awaits.
This is how the the following games look like for The Robins:
Time for Bristol City to see the job through now, we can do it !!
