SU-9O11
stereo preamptifier with Buitt-tn Pre-Preamp for Mc cartridge
Built-ln Mixing Circuit Lets You Jam
with Any Source.
Play or sing along with records. tapes. or
broadcasts by plugging a high quality
microphone into the front panel input jdck.
Adjust volume to blend into the rest of the
music with the mic level knob.
The special mixing circuit prevent source
impedance from affecting the output. Signalto-noise
level is a high 73dB (lHF, A);
frequency response is f lat and wide:
2OHz - 45kHz, -3dB; 0 - -0.1dB at 10kHz.
An independent set of rear panel output jacks
makes it easy to record your performance.
Our Direct Approach to Fidelity Gives
You More Exciting Music in a Smaller
Package.
The new SU-9011 brings you clearer, more
precise reproduction because it represents a
more direct design approach than was
previously possible.
Innovations incorporated in our previous
Technics components prepared the way for
the SU-9011, allowing us to make this preamp
both more compact and more accurate.
Low Noise MC Pre-PreamP Built'ln.
The SU-9011 has two phono inputs, one for
MM only, and one for either MC or MM
cartridges. You can plug your MC cartridge
output directly into the SU-9O11 and enjoy
better fidelity than if you used a separate
step-up transformer. Why? Because the builtin
pre-preamp is not only an impeccable
piece of electronics in itself, it is right in with
the rest of the preamp circuitry so you don't
suffer from mismatching or the warped
frequency response and noise that can come
from using two sets of phono cables. The
extremely high signal to noise ratio of 69dB
(lHF, A) is striking for an MC pre-preamp.
Since this is equivalent to a noise
input of -152d8V, you hear the quietest
Phono (MC) THD vs. InPut Level
pianissimo against a background of
unobtrusive silence. With the MC input,
distortion is a mere 0.02"/" at a preamplifier
output of 1V (2OHz to 20kHz).
Our own original low noise transistors, the
M47LP are in large part to thank for these
impressive figures.
Remole Action Switch, Gold-Plated
Input Jacks, LED Indicator lor MC
Operation.
Switching between MM and MC in the
"phono 1" position is by a new tyPe of
remote action switch. This original device
transfers the actual switching operation from
the front panel to the ideal point within the
circuitry so there is no danger of hum.
The phono 1 input jacks are gold plated to
ensure smooth signal transmission from
cables to preamp.
Another extra is the front panel LED that
lights up when the pre-preamp is switched on.
88dB S/N with MM Phono lnput.
When you use MM cartridges you'll also
enjoy a higher signal-to-noise-ratio.
Referenced to an input of 2.5mV, S/N is SBdB
(lHF, A) which means that the noise level is
1/25,000 of the signal level. The phono
equalizer amp features M47LP low-noise
transistors in the differential first stage with
current mirror loading. This is followed by a
voltage amp and SEPP output stage in a
class-A configuration. Thanks to careful
selection of circuit elements, RIAA
equalization is +0.2d8 from 30Hz to 15,000H2.
Center-Defeat, Unique Tone Control
Circuitry.
In the center position, tone control circuitry is
completely disconnected so that frequency
resoonse is accurate and flat. Tone control is
by class-A driven lC's for low noise and low
distortion.
Input and Output Selectors Designed
for ldeal Switching Performance.
Both the input selector knob and tape
monitor selector are designed so that actual
switching takes place at the ideal location on
the circuit boards for minimum signal
degradation and crosstalk.
Stabilized Voltage Power Supply lor All
Circuils.
This extremely stable power supply provides
the basis for accurate amplification of the
transients which make up music. The
transformer features magnetic shielding of
the coil surface for much better leakage f lux
prevention than in the conventional cut-core
type. The rest of the extra large power supply
circuit is also shielded to prevent adverse
inf luence on the signal circuitry.
Minimized Gang Error in Volume
Control.
This highly accurate volume control has been
designed for minimum gang error and
minimum inf luence on frequency response.
Even at low volume levels, the high range is
not deemohasized.
Subsonic Filter.
Switch on this 30H2, -12dB/oct filter when
you need to cut out harmful low range noise
such as rumble or record warp frequencies.
High filter
Use this 7kHz, -6dB/oct filter to cut out high
frequency noise such as tape hiss and record
scratches.
Phono (MM) THD vs. InPut Level

SE-g O21 stereo DC Power Ampr irier
Anolher Step Towards the ldeal Power
Amp.
Electronics engineers like to describe the
ideal amplifier as a wire having gain. In other
words, the ideal amp would amplify the input
signal as is, without adding coloration or
affecting phase relationships. The SE-9021
comes remarkably close to this dream. lt is a
irue DC amp with virtually flat response from
OHz to 100kHz. Original phase relationships
are maintained within the audio spectrum so
you hear music the way it sounds "live."
Advanced DC Amp Circuitry Delivers
60W + 60W (both channels driven into
8ohms,20Hz to 20kH2,0.01% THD).
DC amplification gives you accurate
reproduction of lower harmonics preserving
phase relationships unaltered.
is achieved
by the latest circuitry which eliminates not
only input and output capacitors but also
coupling capacitors between stages. With
60W per channel and a superb damping
factor of 100, the SE-9021 amplifies all the
dynamism of a full orchestra with the detailed
expression that allows you to pick out
individual instruments.
Gain, Phase vs. Frequency Response
less at rated oower over the entire audio
soectrum trom zOHz to 20kHz. While this is
an impressively high figure, note that at half
the rated power THD drops to an
infinitessimal 0.005% (20H2 to 20kHz), so low
as to be nearly unmeasurable.
Dual Transistor First Stage for Stable
DC Handling.
Instead of the conventional FET's, we have
taken the unusual step of using dual
transistors to form the first stage differential
amplif ier. This stage is current mirror loaded
and the following stages are in a floating
state so that even if there is thermal drift, it
will not cause DC potential to drift. With
carefully matched transistors and stabilized
voltage power supply for the voltage amp
stage, very stable operation is ensured down
to DC.
Precision Peak Melers Indicate even a
Single Wave at 10kHz.
With an incredibly fast rise time of loqrsec or
less, these precision peak meters give you
accurate indications of even the shortest
peak transients.
This remarkable speed and accuracy is
achieved with a high performance linear
detector based on an op amp lC along with a
logarithmicompression circuit.
These meters have a wide range of from
0.001W to 120W with a precision that gives a
OdB reading even for a single wave of a
10kHz frequency.
3-Stage Darlington Output Stage.
The output stage has high linearity and low
output impedance thanks to 3-stage
Darlington construction, an improvement over
the conventional 2-stage Darlington type.
Newly Developed Large El Core
Transformer and Large Electrolytic
Capacitors.
With two 6,8001rF electrolytic capacitors for
each channel, the total comes to 27,2OO{F.
The El core transformer features special
resins having outstanding thermal
conductivity characteristics. The resuli is a
power supply section that handles the
dynamic characteristics of musical signals
with ease.
Speaker Switch Relay and Protection
Circuitry
We have employed relays for speaker
switching to reduce the number of contacts
and minimize the inf luence of switch contact
impedance. These briefly turn off the
speakers during on/off amp switching and if
the protection circuitry detects upstream DC
leakage. The output transistors are also
protected by the relay when there is a short
circuit at the outout terminals.
Signal-to-Noise Ratio ol 113d8 and Flat
Response.
'113dB
S/N (lHF, A) means no matter how
quiet the musical passage being reproduced,
it is unlikely you will ever be bothered by
noise. Frequency response is so flat from
2OHzto 20kHz, +0d8, -0.1d8, that you could
hardly ask for more linear reproduction.
DC/Low-Cut Filter Switch.
The low-cut filter can be switched on for
added speaker protection when necessary.
The One Tuner with Lower Distortion
and Higher Selectivity.
Now you don't have to choose between
high selectivity and low distoriion.
The ST-9031, through the careful choice of
high performance components and
advanced design, gives you both these
essential features in single exceptional
AM/FM stereo tuner.
THD 0.08% (1kHz, mono), Selectivity
75d8.
You need high selectivity to slice out the
station you want from the other stations
on the FM dial. But the problem in the
past was that if you wanted higher
selectivity, you usually had to settle for
higher distortion along with it. With the
new circuit technology and components in
the ST-9031 you don't have to
compromtse.
The SAW (surface acoustic wave) filter
provided one means to solve this problem
since its amplitude and group delay
FM Selectivity
characteristics can be fixed independently.
The other contributor is a set of two
4-element ceramic filters with excellent
narrow band group delay characteristics.
Amplif ication is by an all-stage differential
S-stage amplif ier featuring two lC's having
high stability and superror [miter
characterist ics.
This lF stage gives you a high selectivity
of 75dB with no more than 0.08% THD
(1 kHz, mono) 0.1"/" (1kHz, stereo) so you
get just the station you want with exciting
clarity.
Wide Flat Frequency Response.
For accurate reoroduction of broadcasts
you need as wide and flat frequency
resoonse as oossible. Besides the wide
range, low distortion FM detector circuit,
the Chebyshev-type low pass filter used
after the MPX stage also contributes to
flat frequency response: +0.2d8, -0.8d8
from 20Hz to 15kHz.
Clearer, More Precise Stereo
Reproduction : 50dB Separation
(1kHz).
Attacking jitter was one of our priorities in
designing the ST-9031. Jitter distortion
occurs as an unwanted signal element
when the pilot signal "beats" with the
modulated signal. In this unit we have
employed a special jitter elimination
circuit that gets rid of this distortion in
the MPX stereo demodulation circuitry.
This is accomplished with a narrow-band
band-pass filter and differential amp so
that the MPX lC is supplied with a pure
pilot signal without distortion.
While separation at lkHz is 50dB, the high
range improvement shows up as 40dB at
10kHz.
