PART A : Training method<br />

STEP I<br />

15 Minutes<br />

Introduce the topic by outlining the following objectives of the session. A flip chart or<br />

transparency can be used.<br />

By the end of training, participants should be able to:<br />

a. define <strong>counselling</strong><br />

b. understand and define the different types of <strong>counselling</strong><br />

c. describe the <strong>counselling</strong> process<br />

d. define the stages of <strong>counselling</strong><br />

e. list the aims of <strong>counselling</strong><br />

STEP II Brainstorming 60 Minutes<br />

1. Use any of the following statements and questions to trigger discussion<br />

a. What do you know about <strong>counselling</strong>?<br />

b. Describe some problems in your community and outline how these have<br />

been resolved<br />

2. Write on the flip chart all the responses given<br />

3. Using these ideas together with guidelines presented in this training guide,<br />

formulate a working definition of <strong>counselling</strong><br />

4. Share with participants some of the definitions outlined in this training guide.<br />

5. Conclude the session by clearly spelling out the differences and similarities<br />

between <strong>counselling</strong> and health education<br />
