ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers)
held in Honolulu, USA in May 2009. He also chaired
the session “Alternative Energy and Sustainability” at
the SAOGE 2009 Saudi Arabia International Oil & Gas
Exhibition and Conference in Dammam, Kingdom of
Saudi Arabia in November 2009.
Dr. Nawrocki was a keynote speaker at the 3rd International
Conference on New Developments in Rock Mechanics
and Engineering in Sanya, China in May 2009
where he discussed wellbore stability issues and use
of elastic properties of rocks in petroleum engineering
studies. He also chaired the technical session on “General
Problems and Fundamental Research” in Sanya.
Dr. Ghedan was an invited speaker at the SPE CO2-
EOR Abu Dhabi Workshop in April 2009 and delivered
two presentations: “Challenges of CO2-EOR Compositional
Modeling” and “Optimization for Full Field Development
with CO2-EOR”.
Dr Sarma delivered a keynote technical talk at the
SPE Advanced Technology Workshop on EOR in Bali
in August 2009.
Dr. Williams made two conference presentations in
2009: one in EAGE/SPE Joint Workshop - Well Testing
and Seismics Proceedings in Germany and at the
2009 SPE Annual Technical Conference & Exhibition,
in New Orleans, USA.
Dr. Lu gave two presentations at the SPE Middle East
Oil & Gas Show and Conference, Bahrain, in March
2009: “Steady-state productivity equations for a multiple-wells
system in sector fault reservoirs and channel
reservoirs” as well as “pressure behavior of horizontal
wells in dual-porosity, dual-permeability naturally
fractured reservoirs”.
Students’ activities and
achievements
Petroleum engineering graduate seminars were initiated
in 2009 and our students were exposed to several
professional and networking opportunities through
the Society of Professional Engineers (SPE) and other
organizations. Our SPE Student Chapter, with Dr.
Nawrocki, remained active. The Student Chapter organized
a charity campaign in the last year and hosted
three technical presentations by industry professionals
and our faculty as well as a meeting with SPE President,
Dr. Leo Roodhart. Our students also regularly attended
technical meetings organized by the Abu Dhabi Section
of SPE. Four of our PED female students attended
the SPE Abu Dhabi Section Annual General Meeting
on 16th June 2009. In 2009 Dr Nawrocki completed a
three year term as the PI SPE Student Chapter Faculty
Sponsor and Dr. Ghedan became the next sponsor.
