Participation in Conferences Overall Arts and Science Faculty presented more than 40 conference papers. A significant number of Arts and Sciences faculty presenters were also keynote or plenary speakers during 2009. Invited speakers Chemistry Dr. Avin Pillay was a guest speaker at the Waste Management Conference in Dubai in January 2009. His talk was entitled CO 2 Capture and Sequestration for GHG Reduction and EOR Applications and focused on growing concern over industrial emissions of CO 2 to the atmosphere and its consequent impact on climate. Physics A total of 3 presentations were made. Dr. Abdellatif Bouchalkha was an invited guest speaker to the conference: Intelligent Field Development 2009, held in March 2009 in Dubai. His presentation was entitled “Wireless Sensors Technology in the Oil Industry”. He also presented a paper with the title ‘Modeling of Dust Effect on Solar Panels in Abu Dhabi’ at the Second International Energy 2030 Conference, 4th-5th November, 2009 in Abu Dhabi. Dr. Bouchalkha also served as a Steering Committee member for the 4th IEEE – UAE Student Day , American University in Dubai (AUD), May 2nd, 2009. Drs. Curtis Bradley and Abdellatif Bouchalkha were active members of the Local Organizing Committee for the 4th International Conference on Thermal Engineering: Theory and Applications (ICTEA 2009) meeting, organized by Drs. D. Siginer and M. Z. Saghir, January 12-14, 2009 at the Petroleum Institute, Arzanah Building. H&SS Dr. Dalton Garis was a featured speaker at the Project Management Institute in Bahrain in January. He gave an assessment of the local impact upon the GCC region of the global economic and financial situation, and drew attention to the serious trouble facing the construction sector. Dr. Garis has also been a regular guest commentator for the BBC World TV Middle East Business Report on oil markets and their effects on world oil prices. He appeared 12 times during the last year. Dr. Abdullah Al-Shami had a particularly successful and prolific year as an invited conference speaker as the following list testifies: At the Islamic International Finance Conference on “Islamic Finance in a European Financial Services Framework” from October 12th – 16th ‘09 in Malta, Dr. Al Shami delivered a keynote address and took part in 4 plenary panel discussions: • Islamic Finance – did it resist the Global crisis? (keynote) • Did Islamic finance weather the crisis? (plenary panel discussion) • Takaful VS Conventional Insurance (plenary panel discussion) • Islamic Funds and Sukuk (plenary panel discussion) • Islamic Banking VS Conventional Banking analysis of BASE 11 and other implications country issues (plenary panel discussion) • Islamic Capital Market (plenary panel discussion) 93 The Petroleum Institute Annual Report 2009
College of Arts & Sciences He was a guest speaker at the Institute for International Research, on “Islamic Finance Forum (IIFF)”, April 26-27th, 2009 in Dubai, where he gave two presentations: • Do Sukuk Comply with the Shariah Rules • The Rules of Sharia’ah Boards and Scholars He was also a guest speaker at three other conferences: • Shari’ah and Fiqh: Which is most accommodating, enabling people to adhere in the modern world?, presented at the BRISMES Annual Conference on “Frontiers: Space, Separation and Contact in the Middle East” University of Manchester July 4th- 6th, 2009, UK. (guest speaker) • Islamic Contributions to Economics and Finance: given the present global economics situation, presented at the Annual General Conference on a Post Recession Scenario for Malta, May 22nd-23- rd, 2009, Malta. (keynote) • “Orientalists and their perception of the image of Arab and Muslim culture: a case study of Joseph Schacht” at the International conference on “The Image of Arabs and Muslims in the World Literature”, Damascus University, Syria, April 05th-07- th, 2009. (keynote) Communication As author of two recent academic, research-based books, one of which received an outstanding review by Raphael Salkie (Professor of Language Studies, University of Brighton, UK) in the Times Higher Education of May 28th, 2009, Dr. Caroline Brandt was invited as a plenary speaker at the International Journal of Arts and Sciences Conference, Bad Hofgastein, Austria in June, 2009. Her topic was: “Writing Successful Academic Books: from Proposal to Publication.” Dr. Brandt focused on the academic writing process but also presented on all aspects of the book-publishing process, including finding and approaching a publisher, preparing a proposal and negotiating a contract. Finally she addressed editorial, production and promotion matters. Various starting points were suggested for anyone considering writing an academic book, and several essential ingredients for success were provided. The plenary, one of three held on the first day of the conference, was extremely well attended, and led to much discussion and subsequently consultation. Dr. Roger Nunn was the guest speaker for Iranian teachers of English in the UAE at their annual Teacher Training Seminar in February 2009, in Dubai. He delivered a presentation and workshop on classroom methodology: “Is the method Concept Obsolete? Redefining Method as a Teacher-Centred Concept.” In April , Dr. Nunn was invited as a plenary speaker at the Asian EFL conference in Pusan, South Korea. The conference focus was on the “Multiple Roles of the Language Teacher.” Dr. Nunn presented his latest research and ideas on “method-in-use” in the area of competent classroom methodology, and also presented on alternative approaches to competent academic writing for academic journals in a concurrent session. He also gave a plenary keynote address on a related topic: “Comparing Teachers’ Method-in-use across Cultures” – at the English as an International Language Conference hosted by the English as an International Language Journal and Dokuz Eylül University, Izmir, Turkey: (October 2009). He gave the final plenary address presenting findings from his PI-funded research on “Key Aspects of a Modal for Analyzing Competent Academic Texts across Scientific Genres” at the Asian ESP Conference at Chongqing University, China at the end of October. Math At the ICTEA conference at the PI in January 2009, in a special session on Applied Mathematics Dr. Jaap Geluk gave a presentation on second order results in subexponentiality. Dr. Fahir T.
