about Páramo’s ‘coming of age’,
two decades after he originally
developed the unique fabrics
that first set the brand apart...
Páramo is coming out of its
adolescence. 20 years ago Páramo was
just a concept – perhaps a twinkling
in my eye! 17 years ago just a couple
of garments were available. But now
as a brand it is recognised as being
uniquely successful. Páramo combines a
radical and uncompromising approach
to providing comfort and safety in the
mountains with outstanding ethical
manufacturing and, arguably, the
lowest environmental profile of any
clothing in the market.
No compromise performance
The Technical bit
– Directionality and Design
make Páramo different
The original idea behind the Nikwax
Analogy fabric was highly theoretical.
Was it possible to use fabric structure
combined with water-repellency to
mimic the way that mammals stay
dry? Liquid water occupies around
1/700th of the volume of water
vapour, so it is much more efficient to
try to move liquid water in clothing
than to rely upon conventional
moisture vapour transfer.
The idea that liquid water could
be actively directed away from the
body with Analogy fabric was first
tested 20 years ago in the South
American Andes. But only when it
was combined with garment design
from Greg Care – an outdoor leader
and outstanding innovator – did
Páramo start to take off. With Páramo
clothing there is no compromise on
performance – we do not produce
purely fashion items. We want our
clothing to look good, of course, but
it has to fulfil its prime functions, and
more, in the environment for which it
has been created:
Directionality – moves liquid water
to where you want it.
‘On the hill’ Design – means garments

Manufacturing in Colombia
For the first 10 years of Páramo we
didn’t promote the fact that Páramo
manufacturing rescues families from
poverty and worse. We didn’t publicise
the Colombian side of the operation
because we felt that Páramo should
make its reputation first and foremost
through its technical performance. Only
once our partners in Colombia, the
Miquelina Foundation, had achieved
the prestigious ISO 9001 quality
standard did we feel that we should
communicate their excellent social
project. There was also some reticence
from the workers’ side, did the Páramo
workers want to be recognised as
having been given a route out of
prostitution and exploitation?
But these days our Colombian
partners are profoundly proud to be
members of the Páramo/ Miquelina
family. Having started with just 10
ladies, now there are more than 250
making Páramo in Colombia, and
thousands of people, including the
new generation, have benefitted
and are benefitting from the training
programmes, the kindergarten, the
school, the psychological and support
ECO benefits
Environmental Opportunities
Páramo combines fabric structure
with renewable water-repellency in
order to produce a waterproof jacket.
Consequently, the functionality of
Páramo waterproofs can be renewed
again and again and... again. And
there are no membranes or laminates
to fracture or fail. Early on we learned
that polyester resists ultraviolet
degradation much better than nylon,
so we moved our range entirely over to
polyester. This gave us the opportunity
offer a genuine life-time guarantee.
The extra advantage lies in how
much energy is consumed for an
average Páramo waterproof ‘user year’
compared to most outdoor membrane
jackets that might only last for 3
hard years, rather than at least 15
for Páramo. From an environmental Best wishes
viewpoint, Páramo wins hands
down. In theory, our 100% polyester
garments, with no membranes, Nick Brown
laminates or taped seams, are also Páramo MD
services and the housing cooperative
that have been set up around the
project. Now some of the first
post-Páramo graduates – children of
people who started in our early days
– are working in Miquelina’s business
administration in Bogotá. Every

to walk!
Maybe you’ve always had a dog to take, rain or shine, or were
chivvied from a young age into family treks up hills and down
dales. Other walkers can look back to a specific time when they
started to walk – often with friends or for a particular goal.
We’ve talked to a few walkers to find out what started them off...

It was the Ten Tors
event, the weekend
long hike organized by
the army on Dartmoor,
which gave me a love
of the outdoors. I first
competed in this event at
the age of 14, and went on
to enter many more times
throughout my teens.
I have some great memories of training
with my friends in the winter months;
we often found ourselves walking into
driving rain and sleet or having to
wade through bogs and rivers. So I was
glad to have several Páramo garments,
which without exception kept me dry,
comfortable and warm.
In particular my Alta jacket proved
invaluable. As well as serving me well
on Dartmoor I have also used it (and
the 3rd Element I later invested in)
when climbing and walking in the
Swiss Alps and have worn it on
several skiing holidays too. Over the
years they have proved to be the
most useful, reliable and versatile

It was the Moonwalk that got
me started...
11:30pm, I’m at the start line yawning
then we’re off! 15,000 people charging
through London’s streets for 26.2 miles
IN OUR BRAS. Insane, but all in the
name of charity, Walk the Walk, for
breast cancer research – hence the
dress code!
1 hour in, we’re going over Tower
Bridge. The wind has picked up
and my bra isn’t the warmest
outfit. Time for my Velez Smock.
5 hours in, it starts to rain.
Again my Velez Smock comes
to the rescue, not only keeping
me warm and dry but I’ve
stashed a collection of chocolate
bars in the pocket!
7 hours in, we reach Hyde Park. With
my legs about to give way I see the
finish line. But no, we still have to walk
around the whole park, another 2 miles,
arrggghhhh!!! My sister has a burst of
energy and skips the last mile – I really
should have done more training...
...finally the finish line, the sun is up and
I’m ready for bed. My Velez now comes
in handy as a pillow. Thanks Páramo for
helping me survive the night!

the walking habit – 2 miles to school,
family walks at the weekend, and
walking holidays with HF Holidays,
where my parents had first met.
My love of walking has remained
steady throughout my life. There
are few things that give me greater
pleasure than a day hiking in the Peaks
or walking the Seven Sisters from
Eastbourne to Cuckmere. I dare say I’ll
be walking in my old age; I can’t think
of a better way of keeping fit.
These days I am seldom without my
Páramo Fuera Peak jacket; it weighs
virtually nothing, yet its clever venting
means it keeps the worst of the wind
and rain out without me ever getting
uncomfortably hot. So much better than
those sweaty cagoules I used to wear!

Ramblers Association
British charity Ramblers promotes
rambling, protects rights of way,
campaigns for access to open country
and defends the countryside. 500 local
groups improve conditions for walkers
at a local level and organise hundreds of
walks for young walkers (‘Hike’ groups)
and families as well as mixed groups.

The Long Distance Walkers
Association
Members share a common interest
of walking long distances in rural,
mountainous or moorland areas. The
LDWA promotes organised challenge
walks and pioneers new walking routes.

people of all ages and abilities. You
don’t have to be a club member to

It changed my life – I’ve never been
bored since! Nothing has beaten that
first panorama of Weald, Downs, and
Sea. At 10, after a family holiday to
the Lake District – a week of unusually
perfect weather and awesome peaks –
I was ‘addicted to the outdoors’. When
too old for Girl Guides, I joined the Air
Training Corps, with access to adventure
training centres in Llanbedr, Capel Curig
and Windermere, and abroad to the
Ardeche and Czech Republic.
I started the Duke of Edinburgh Award
keen to experience everything it offers,
especially how to navigate when you
can’t see a thing in horrific weather.
Nothing teaches you how to dig deep
in times of trouble more than the

“In my volunteer work for the Friends
of Bedgebury Pinetum, I get involved
in many activities, but my absolute
favourite is conducting Guided Walks.
In two hours, I give a potted history
of the Pinetum – the most complete
collection of conifers in the world
– point out areas of interest and
describe the Pinetum’s aims.
I always take my Páramo Alta II with
me on my walks – it’s lightweight,
D of E Award. This may sound cheesy,
but being able to rely on my Páramo
waterproofs in the worst of times
is a real help. The trousers stayed
waterproof even when torn and
wicked water away after wading
through bogs got them wet inside.
Now the D of E Expedition is over,
what next? I’ll still be walking, that’s
certain. I’ve registered for my ML
(Summer) Award to help other young
people experience the outdoors.
I dream of bigger peaks and higher
mountains - all in due course,
obviously. But every time I pack my
rucksack, the one set of gear always in

The
Jurassic coast

of the Year 2007
The Jurassic Coast is one of the UK’s
best-known landscapes. Dramatic
rock formations, enormous landslips,
distant views, intimate coves and
fossil-rich shorelines are all featured
in the 95 miles of coast between
Exmouth and Poole Harbour. Packed
into this comparatively short stretch of
coastline are exposures of three major
geological time periods (Triassic,
Jurassic and Cretaceous) representing
185 million years of the earth’s history.
Constant erosion from the sea means
that the cliffs are always changing
and new fossils are exposed.
It is a dynamic landscape, not only
from the geological point of view
but also from a human perspective.
For years people have visited this
coastline. Some come to rest and
relax, others take a more active
approach by walking, sailing and
wildlife-watching. Many more people
live and work along the coast, older
traditions of stone quarrying and
fishing being interwoven with more
contemporary employment in the
tourist industry.
As part of a major arts project, I have
been given the exciting opportunity
to document the Jurassic Coast over
the next 18 months, working with
other artists (poet, sculptor and
musician) to produce a new audiovisual
presentation and book which
will celebrate the unique diversity and
drama of this World Heritage Site.
As with all landscape photography
projects, the best results come from
working in all weathers and in all
seasons. Spring flowers, summer
crowds, autumn storms and winter
sunsets will all be part of the story. And
that will mean being on the coast at any
time of the year and in any weather.
My current garment of choice is the
Velez Adventure Light Smock, I rarely
take it off but I’m also pretty fond of
Fuera windproof kit for summer use.

I have been very privileged to live and work in the North West Highlands of
Scotland for the last 30 years, both in the hills and on the sea. For the last
17 years I have been based on Knoydart, where I run a boat taking walkers,
divers and photographers around Knoydart, Skye and the Small Isles.
For me there is nothing to beat the
pleasures of walking in the hills on a
winter’s day, or being able to share with
other people the stunning scenery and
wonderful wildlife during the summer.
I have tried all sorts of clothing to
protect me from the elements but in all
that time I have never found one ideal
solution to the wind, rain, sun and
snow that I encounter – until now.
Since getting a Velez Adventure Smock
last year there has been no going back.
Without a word of exaggeration, the
Smock – and the Cascada Trousers I use
in the winter – are the best designed
gear I’ve ever had. Light, waterproof,
breathable and so comfortable that, as
I boasted to my son, you don’t know
that you’re wearing them.
I’m now inseparable from my Velez,
summer or winter. Until recently that
is – landing some guests on an island
I managed to leave it on a rock below
the high tide mark and when I returned
it was gone. My son commented dryly
that it was probably because I really
didn’t know whether I was wearing it.
But I like to think that somewhere out
there is a very stylish and comfortable
cypress green seal!

Which base layer?
A Páramo Reversible Shirt OR a reversible Cambia Tshirt
Both are reversible – so what’s the difference?
u The key difference between these base layers is the amount of insulation they provide:
• So if you feel the cold or are undertaking low level activity with long static periods (such as bird
watching) you’ll benefit from the additional insulation a Páramo Reversible Shirt provides;
• If you ‘run hot’ or are likely to be working hard and expending lots of energy, then a Cambia base

Overlayering: keeping
warm The Páramo way
How to keep warm and dry in the cold and wet – Páramo style!
It’s hard during a day’s activity to wear one set of clothing to meet
all conditions – so how best to stay comfortable?
The conventional
layering approach
Base layer/ mid layer/ shell, with the
fleece mid layer carried in the pack,
to be worn when needed, for comfort
or survival. BUT:
• The wetter that fleece gets, the less
it insulates. Soak a conventional
fleece in water and it loses up to
95% of its insulation.
• Getting a mid layer on and off can
be a complicated manoeuvre
that cancels out all the benefits
– especially in high winds or
precipitation. Removing the shell
lets the rain in and any warmth out,
simply to try and attain more warmth.
• Often we choose to suffer the cold
rather than undertake this risky
manoeuvre. We rush on, unwilling
to stop and get our bearings – and
risk getting colder in the process.
• Alternatives for extreme situations,
such as survival bags, often
compromise mobility completely.

Base layer and Analogy waterproof are
