She never knows when a manufacturer will need something delivered ASAP. “Emergencies don’t happen on a 9 to 5 schedule,” she said. Aubin is owner of Delivery Express, a family-owned delivery service that provides rapid shipping in critical situations. The company can ship anything that isn’t hazardous, ranging from costly parts to printed materials to small machines. It just has to fit within the dimensions of its vans, which carry loads up to 3,300 pounds, 51 inches high and 144 inches deep. The company’s drivers literally can pack up and go anytime, anywhere in the United States and parts of Canada. Most of the time, they’re faster and cheaper than other delivery services. “Our drivers are on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year,” Aubin said. “We can offer the same service—if not better— than bigger companies. But since we don’t have all the overhead, we’re much more competitive.” When Mactech needed to deliver one of its pipe-cutting machines from Red Wing, Minnesota, to Lafayette, Louisiana, for example, it could have chosen any major shipper. It chose Delivery Express because it offered direct pick up and was less expensive. “We’ve had really good luck with Delivery Express,” said Mactech President Joel Wittenbraker. “They usually deliver a little faster than they say that they will and they’re competitively priced.” When a mill in Northwest Ontario Son Dan Aubin and Mother Vicki Aubin of Delivery Express, a family-owned delivery service that provides rapid shipping in critical situations. shut down and needed parts to get up and running, Cole International, a Canadian customs broker, called Delivery Express to pick up the parts from the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport and deliver them to the mill. They arrived 7 hours later. “From the experience I’ve had with Delivery Express, they’re very good in critical situations,” said Don Pawluk, branch manager of Cole International Freight. “Certainly they provide a niche market for us, especially when we need them to go into some of the more remote areas where mines are located.” Delivery Express does not charge extra for going off a main route. The company also does local deliveries in the Twin Cities, shipping up to 3,300 pounds for a flat rate of $80. She wanted to homeschool her kids so they could travel the country with her. A few years later, however, Aubin had enough business to support a company of her own, so she purchased some vehicles, hired a few employees and established Delivery Express. Recently, her son, Dan, joined the company, having completed his degree in marketing from Concordia. He is charged with helping Delivery Express grow and has big dreams for their little company. “Ever since my junior year in high school, I’ve known what I want to do with my life,” he said. “My first plan is to build Delivery Express to a multi-billion dollar international corporation, and use its assets and influence as the power behind my dream to help people around the world who are struggling to survive. I want to give them an opportunity to escape from their circle of poverty.” He said he envisions Delivery Express using trucks and planes to move food, medicine, materials and other basic neessities. For now, though, he’s focused on adding another hub for the company in St.Louis, Missouri. “The good thing about being family is that our belief systems are the same,” he said. “Both of us are equally committed to the business. I have a lot of recent education and she has a lot of real-world experience.” What sets Delivery Express apart from other “hot shot” companies, he said, is the company’s flexibility. Since its drivers aren’t contracted out, they are available anytime and can respond to changes immediately. “There are other companies that do what we do, but not one has the same flexibility and reach across the country,” he said. 28 | PRECISION MANUFACTURING July | August 2009 PAID SUPPLEMENT
To accommodate odd loads, Delivery Express has a variety of vehicles ranging from car size for small shipments to van size that can hold three pallets up to 3,300 pounds. In designing her company’s goals, Aubin interviewed shipping clerks to find out what they would want in a “hot shot” company. She used their suggestions as her company’s standards. • Ethics: dealing honestly in every situation. As family members, Vicki and Dan share the same belief system. They pledge to be fair and honest in every situation. • Flexibility: being ready to go anytime. Delivery Express’ drivers are on standby 24 hours a day, 365 days a year so they can respond quickly to the need for emergency deliveries. They are also equipped with cell phones, so they can make mid flight changes anytime. • Dependability: being on time. Delivery Express has a proven track record of arriving on time. If, however, they encounter traffic, weather or other issues, they will notify the customer immediately. • Cost: delivering the best value. For shipments over 200 pounds, few companies can beat Delivery Express’ rates. In addition, the company offers volume discounts for repeat customers. All cargo is insured up to $25,000. Vehicle liability is up to $1 million. These standards are why hundreds of manufacturers choose Delivery Express. Some have even referred the company to their own suppliers. Katie Vasilakes- Hoffman, service parts coordinator for TEAM Industries, recently sent Vicki and Dan this e-mail: “In the past I have used delivery Express for my expediting needs and Delivery Express has always been professional and has provided exceptional performance. Delivery Express has helped us in the past to avoid lines from being shutdown, lost production, and additional charges.” In the manufacturing industry, time is money. Fortunately, Vicki and Dan deliver more than shipments. They deliver promises. “We want manufacturers to think of us when they’re in a jam,” he said. “Because we provide an awesome service at an awesome price.” Vicki and Dan encourage new customers to call them for quotes and set up an account so they can keep their information on hand. That way, when there’s a shipping emergency, everyone will be prepared.
