Dear Jane and all at PEN
An Invitation to participate as an Observer in New Writing Worlds 05 ,
The University of East Anglia , Norwich, Friday 17 June-Sunday 19 June
The New Writing Partnership is launching the first edition of its international project New
Writing Worlds. We are bringing forty accomplished writers from different parts of the
world to Norwich to participate in a range of events that include workshops, readings and
discussions.
The core of this project will be a three day symposium hosted by The University of East
Anglia at which the visiting writers will discuss “literary value” in contemporary society –
the traditions, the readers, the publishers. The writers represent a variety of literary
traditions and come from many different cultures.
The symposium will have two main sessions on Friday and Saturday (10am-1pm and 2-
5pm) and one session on the Sunday (10am-1pm).
We think it vital that writers have the opportunity to meet and discuss literary practice in
the context of our global marketplace: to explore what values and beliefs may be shared
and where they might diverge. We have opted that these discussions would have most
value in a protected environment, allowing for informality and personal contact which we
hope will create an atmosphere of openness and frankness.
However, we would also like to use this opportunity to create links between the writers
and the writing profession in the UK. To facilitate this, we are inviting a limited number of
observers to the symposium.
We would be delighted if you were able to join us an observer at the Symposium.
In addition to the symposium, many of the writers will be engaged in community events
and events with local writers My Writing World (schools workshops, workshops for
writing groups, open workshops and tea time writers chats at The Norfolk and Norwich
Millennium Library as well as an on line writing project “My Writing World”) and these
events start on June 13 th . Naturally, there will be the opportunity to visit this programme
at some point in the programme.
There will also be evening public reading events at The University at 7pm on
Thursday16,Friday 17,Saturday 18. and also the afternoon of Sunday 19 June.
Although you will have the role of an “observer” during the symposium sessions (10-13
and 14-17), you will be able to mix with the other observers and writers during the
breaks, lunches and dinners.
Naturally, there is no fee for the event and we are also able to offer you meals at the
UEA symposium and tickets for the events. If you do require accommodation, we are
also happy to provide this at the UEA guest accommodation where the writers will also
be staying. This can be for a maximum of two nights.
As we have a strictly limited number of places, we would appreciate your immediate
response to whether these dates are convenient.
The easiest way to do this will be to return the form attached.
We also enclose a list of the confirmed writers for your information and we will naturally
forward you a full programme for the symposium and related events in due course and if
you require further information please contact us on Tel 01603 877177 or e- mail
alison.young@newwritingpartnership.org.uk
We do hope you can join us for this exciting event and look forward to hearing from you
in the near future
Yours Sincerely
Trevor Davies
