Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> term epigenetics * defines all mitotically <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> meiotically heritable changes in gene expres-<br />

si<strong>on</strong> that are not coded by the <strong>DNA</strong> sequence (1, 2) . Epigenetics literally means ‘<strong>on</strong> top <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> ge-<br />

netics’. In additi<strong>on</strong> to the <strong>DNA</strong> sequencing * , epigenetics explains the c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> another<br />

system, <strong>on</strong>e that is resp<strong>on</strong>sible for the direct translati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the genetic informati<strong>on</strong> to c<strong>on</strong>trol<br />

the genes influencing our growth <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> development (2) . Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, it explains why different<br />

cell types <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> an organism share identical <strong>DNA</strong> sequences but show amazingly diverse func-<br />

ti<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> phenotypes (2-4) . Epigenetics is important for development <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> cell differentiati<strong>on</strong><br />

but could c<strong>on</strong>tribute to c<strong>on</strong>genital disorders <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> health problems (3) . Several epigenetic processes<br />

have been described in humans. <strong>DNA</strong> methylati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> hist<strong>on</strong>e modificati<strong>on</strong>s, main<br />

comp<strong>on</strong>ents <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> epigenetic code, are the mechanisms involved side by side for the regulati<strong>on</strong><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> epigenetic processes (5) .<br />

1.1.1 Hist<strong>on</strong>e modificati<strong>on</strong><br />

<strong>DNA</strong> * is coiled around hist<strong>on</strong>es (the main protein comp<strong>on</strong>ents), which means that both to-<br />

gether compose the chromatin (6) . <strong>DNA</strong> is wrapped around nucleosomes (core hist<strong>on</strong>es) (7) <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

fixed in place with small proteins called linker hist<strong>on</strong>es (Fig. 1). <str<strong>on</strong>g>The</str<strong>on</strong>g> supercoiling <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> this<br />

necklace helps the fitting <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>DNA</strong> into the tiny nucleus (6) . Additi<strong>on</strong>ally, chromatin c<strong>on</strong>trols<br />

the gene expressi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>DNA</strong> replicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> cell functi<strong>on</strong>s. Hist<strong>on</strong>e modificati<strong>on</strong>s including<br />

methylati<strong>on</strong>, acetylati<strong>on</strong>, phosphorylati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> others affect gene expressi<strong>on</strong>, <strong>DNA</strong> replicati<strong>on</strong>,<br />

mitosis <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>DNA</strong> repair mechanism (8-10) .<br />
