Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

is an electrophilic metabolite that attacks preferentially the nitrogen sites <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nucleobase result-<br />

ing in the formati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> N 2 -guanine adducts (171, 226) (Fig. 11). Thus, B[a]P leads to the muta-<br />

ti<strong>on</strong>s in growth regulatory proto-<strong>on</strong>cogenes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> tumour-suppressor genes <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> results in cancer<br />

formati<strong>on</strong> (171, 274, 275) . B[a]P was detected al<strong>on</strong>g P53 tumour suppressor genes which repre-<br />

sents the major mutati<strong>on</strong>al hotspots in two third <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> detected lung cancers in humans (171) .<br />

Importantly in the pharmaceutical field, B[a]P is present in a high c<strong>on</strong>tent in coal tars, which<br />

are the major incorporated ingredients in the preparati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> therapeutic ointments used in se-<br />

vere cases <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> psoriasis (276, 277) . Recently, coal tars were estimated as being highly involved in<br />

the carcinogenicity in humans (278) . Different studies performed in vitro as in vivo to provide<br />

an evident c<strong>on</strong>clusi<strong>on</strong> for the c<strong>on</strong>tributi<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> PAHs in carcinogenesis (171, 274, 277) .<br />

Recently, nitro-PAHs were classified as new mutagens found in some envir<strong>on</strong>mental comp<strong>on</strong>ents<br />

such as diesel exhaust <str<strong>on</strong>g>and</str<strong>on</strong>g> airborne particles (279) .<br />
