As your community foundation, we identify needs and opportunities
in Brookline.
Grants Awarded in 2005
BCF awarded a total of $254,500 in grants in 2005, including $131,053 in
Discretionary Funds, $24,859 from the Brookline Youth Fund, $9,700 in grants
from the Environmental Stewardship Fund, $16,925 in grants for the Brookline 300
celebration (in addition to $26,000 awarded in 2004), $7,500 in grants from the
Fund for Arts and Culture and other gifts designated for the arts, $38,370 in rent
subsidies, and $26,093 in Emergency Assistance Grants to individuals and families.
The following grants are made from Brookline Community Foundation
Discretionary Funds:
Health And Human Services
Match-Up Interfaith Volunteers for volunteer programs to provide medical
transportation and friendly visits to frail and isolated Brookline elders. $5,000
Rogerson Communities for a weekly music therapist as part of the arts programming
in the Adult Day Health Program at the Brookline Senior Center. $5,000
Kids’ Clothes Club to purchase winter coats for low income Brookline teenagers, and
support for operating costs. $1,500
Brookline Recreation Department start up funding for Fit for Life, a weeklong,
town wide fitness advocacy program. $1,940
Baker School Extended Day to purchase and install equipment, and to train
instructors for an Adventure Education program, a collaboration between Extended
Day and the Physical Education Department to promote mental and physical fitness
in students in kindergarten through 8th grade. $14,906
HEARTH for support services for formerly homeless elders living at the Ruth Cowin
House in Brookline. $7,500
Brookline Council on Aging Year 3 of a 3-year matching grant for senior van
transportation services for the elderly. $5,000
Community and Organizational Development
Brookline Emergency Food Pantry for a sustainability campaign to build support
for the Food Pantry. $7,500
Steps to Success for an outside evaluator to assess intermediate outcomes for the
college readiness program for low-income youth. $15,000

Driscoll School PTO for expansion of the Urban Improv project on adolescent issues
of bullying and intolerance. $9,000
Steps to Success for Work Connections for Youth, a summer internship program for
100 low-income Brookline youth, ages 13 to 18. $23,750
Lincoln School PTO for Respect for All training for teachers and staff at Lincoln and
Driscoll Schools to foster a comfortable school environment for families of gays and
lesbians. $3,954
Brookline Schools Staff Children’s Center to produce Storytelling for Infants
and Toddlers, a handbook for parents and teachers on how to improve fundamental
pre-literacy skills. $4,500
MAB Community Services to support a music education program for brain-injured
adolescents in residential Ivy Street School, in collaboration with Brookline Music
School. $3,000
Devotion School PTO for Tune Into Language, a kindergarten program using music
to teach literacy skills in classrooms with many children whose first language is not
English. $4,475
Driscoll School PTO for a project that involves 8th graders as photographers who
will illustrate a forthcoming book, American Adolescents in the 21st Century. $1,000
The Arts
Artbarn Community Theatre for the after school Rafters Theatre Program for teens
in grades 7 to 9. $10,000
Brookline Arts Center to support the event for the Gadsby Awards honoring artistic
achievement for Brookline Public School students in grades 4 to 7. $1,828
Company One, Inc. for the Stage One summer theatrical program for 13-17 year-olds.
$3,500
Coolidge Corner Community Chorus for scholarships for low income elders and
students to participate in the community chorus. $2,400
Environment

Designated Funds and Field of Interest Funds:
BHRYT Designated Fund
Brookline Community Mental Health Center for the Brookline High Risk Youth
Task Force program to provide tutoring, counseling, and coordination of academic
and social services for high school students who suffer chronic or serious illness or
other conditions that put them at risk for failure at the high school. This fund was
created for the local funders who help to provide a one-to-one match for a four-year
grant for this program from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Local Initiative
Partners Program. $41,968

Environmental Stewardship Fund
To the Brookline Department of Public Works for restoration of the historic
landscape between the lagoon and community gardens at Larz Anderson Park, a
designated historic landmark. This grant was matched by municipal funds. $9,700
(Note: an additional $5,300 was awarded from Discretionary Funds.)
The Brookline Fund for Arts and Culture
To Harriet Casdin-Silver and the Casdin-Silver Studio for a holographic, digital
and auditory portrait, Brookline 300: The People, created for Brookline’s 300th
anniversary to illustrate the generational and ethnic diversity of the community.

The Brookline Safety Net $26,093
The Brookline Safety Net is a fund of the Brookline Community Foundation that
provides temporary emergency assistance to residents of Brookline in times of
financial crisis and unexpected need. Supported by contributions from Brookline
residents, and by an allocation from the federal Emergency Food and Shelter
Program, the Safety Net provides help with food, fuel, shelter, and referrals to other
local public and private agencies and resources.
The Brookline Community Mental Health Center administers the Brookline
Safety Net Emergency Assistance Program on behalf of the Brookline Community
Foundation. Referrals for emergency assistance typically come from religious
organizations, schools, social service agencies, the Department of Welfare, the
Department of Social Services, the United Way First Call for Help and the Salvation
Army. The Brookline Safety Net provides emergency assistance to an average of 150
individuals and families each year.
Brookline Tercentennial Fund
More than 500 Brookline residents gave $42,000 between 2004 and 2005 to
the Tercentennial Fund for projects celebrating Brookline’s 300th birthday.
The following is a complete list of Tercentennial Fund Grants:
Brookline Preservation Commission to preserve and place in the public record
historic photographs of Brookline by creating an electronic archive. $3,000
Brookline Historical Society for twelve educational markers to be placed on
historically significant public buildings and locations. $4,000
A Shining Example, start-up funds to produce and market T-shirts and caps
promoting Brookline 300, with a portion of sales donated to help fund other
celebration projects. $2,000
Goddard House in Brookline for Brookline Story Partners 300, bringing people
of different ages and backgrounds together for life story interviews using the
StoryCorps model devised by National Public Radio. $2,850
Artbarn Community Theatre to produce a dramatization of The Brookline Trunk,
a book about children growing up in Brookline, and for an activity at the Town’s
September Brookline 300 Festival with masks representing 300 significant residents
in Brookline history. $5,800
Puppet Showplace Theatre for a puppet show, presented by Bread & Puppet Theatre
at Brookline’s 300th anniversary celebration at Larz Anderson Park. $5,000

Brookline Arts Center for art activities offered at the Brookline 300 Festival and
Anniversary Celebration: a paper block “Brookline Mosaic” mural and a series of

featuring Kevin So, a young songwriter whose music reflects his experiences growing

Rebecca Hartka for the Phoenix Trio performance of German and Irish music in

PALS Children’s Chorus to commission and perform a choral work incorporating
