Environmental Stewardship Fund To the Brookline Department of Public Works for restoration of the historic landscape between the lagoon and community gardens at Larz Anderson Park, a designated historic landmark. This grant was matched by municipal funds. $9,700 (Note: an additional $5,300 was awarded from Discretionary Funds.) The Brookline Fund for Arts and Culture To Harriet Casdin-Silver and the Casdin-Silver Studio for a holographic, digital and auditory portrait, Brookline 300: The People, created for Brookline’s 300th anniversary to illustrate the generational and ethnic diversity of the community.
■ ■ Housing While three quarters of Brookline is zoned for single-family housing, most people (78% of Brookline’s population) live in multi-family housing. Almost one in five Brookline home-owners spend more than 35% of household income on housing costs. Education 80% of Brookline High School seniors go on to college. The Brookline Safety Net $26,093 The Brookline Safety Net is a fund of the Brookline Community Foundation that provides temporary emergency assistance to residents of Brookline in times of financial crisis and unexpected need. Supported by contributions from Brookline residents, and by an allocation from the federal Emergency Food and Shelter Program, the Safety Net provides help with food, fuel, shelter, and referrals to other local public and private agencies and resources. The Brookline Community Mental Health Center administers the Brookline Safety Net Emergency Assistance Program on behalf of the Brookline Community Foundation. Referrals for emergency assistance typically come from religious organizations, schools, social service agencies, the Department of Welfare, the Department of Social Services, the United Way First Call for Help and the Salvation Army. The Brookline Safety Net provides emergency assistance to an average of 150 individuals and families each year. Brookline Tercentennial Fund More than 500 Brookline residents gave $42,000 between 2004 and 2005 to the Tercentennial Fund for projects celebrating Brookline’s 300th birthday. The following is a complete list of Tercentennial Fund Grants: Brookline Preservation Commission to preserve and place in the public record historic photographs of Brookline by creating an electronic archive. $3,000 Brookline Historical Society for twelve educational markers to be placed on historically significant public buildings and locations. $4,000 A Shining Example, start-up funds to produce and market T-shirts and caps promoting Brookline 300, with a portion of sales donated to help fund other celebration projects. $2,000 Goddard House in Brookline for Brookline Story Partners 300, bringing people of different ages and backgrounds together for life story interviews using the StoryCorps model devised by National Public Radio. $2,850 Artbarn Community Theatre to produce a dramatization of The Brookline Trunk, a book about children growing up in Brookline, and for an activity at the Town’s September Brookline 300 Festival with masks representing 300 significant residents in Brookline history. $5,800 Puppet Showplace Theatre for a puppet show, presented by Bread & Puppet Theatre at Brookline’s 300th anniversary celebration at Larz Anderson Park. $5,000
