having the exam until Thursday only (Sept 29).
3. Checkers shall be asked to bring make-up class forms when they make the rounds and
give these forms to concerned faculty as a reminder. This will also give the faculty the
MEMO REMINDER
8 July 2010
To: Department Chairs
Through : Deans
From : Dr. Olivia Legaspi, VCAR
Subject: ELGA related concerns
######################
Based on the initial feedback that we have
received from the community, the
following solutions are offered:
1.0 On percentages allotted to the final
project as being low
The ELGA factor in the grading
system shall be increased or strengthened
by allotting percentages for the
final product (in stages) in the prelim
(5%) and midterm period (10%).
Modifications could be made as early
as this semester.
2.0 On final product demanding so much
from the students
The final product may be done (by
phases) as early as the preliminary
period.
3.0 On scope of requirements of culminating
activity
Requirement may be toned down to
cover accessible areas.
4.0 On the final product being ambitious
Final product may be modified.
5.0 On the operational definition of
ELGA
The department has the leeway to
make its own operational definitions
of ELGAs
By midterm period, a special session shall
be conducted to further help you implement
the syllabus. The session will be
based on the results of the feedback that
the faculty will be giving thru the DLSP
feedback form. Kindly ask as many
faculty in your department as you can to
accomplish the form.
Please submit the form by the end of
July.
Thank you for your attention.
THE OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE
OFFICE OF THE VCAR
1. Final output will be needed only for the subjects that has a laboratory
or skills will be measured. Final product be required only for
major subjects
The final output seeks to capture a real-life situation in which the students would put into
use whatever they learned in the course of the semester. This is something that goes beyond
laboratory classes or skills.
2. One ELGA-based project for every section for them to focus on
and choose only one major subject for them to apply all of the concepts.
This would lessen the tasks given to them and have more time
to study/prepare for the finals.
Even without the ELGA based syllabus, terminal projects would be asked of students. The
ELGA-based project may be toned down to make it possible for students to still accomplish
other things.
3. Why not choose 1 major subject and 1 minor subject to have the
final product, not all the subjects? The reason, to do the project is
costly, time consuming and it will be of the same time with their
reports in the laboratory subjects. ELGA/Syllabus must be given to
specific subjects only and not to all subjects.
All subjects are required to come up with a final output. But the final output is dependent
on the creativity of the department. It is not a necessity that it be costly and time
consuming.
4. Devise institutional guidelines on the distribution of grade of the final product, Also consider the nature of
the subject in doing it. The percentage allotted for the project should be given more weight because of the
effort and conduct of research extended by the students.
Again, the current guidelines provide 30% for the final product. It is up to the department to determine how the 30% shall be divided. Further,
it is up to the department if they would like, under class standing, to include percentages for activities in relation to the final product.
5. Kailangan ng “research break” ng mga estudyante para maisakatuparan ang mga naturang pananaliksik (2
linggo). Sana’y nailagay ito sa silabus.
It is placed in the syllabus under library work. The department determines how many hours are spent in the library.
6. Include the 10% project in each grading period for the ELGA final product. Start the checking of final
product during the prelims.
The July 8-memo provides that 5 and 10 percent may be given during the prelim and midterm period, respectively for the final product.
7. There is a need to orient the students as part of the INTRO 01 course on the Expected Lasallian Graduate
Attributes (ELGAs).
This is a good idea. We will coordinate with the OSS regarding this matter.
8. Let the teachers have the liberty to gauge the performance of the students based on their efforts and output
instead of sheer ELGA contents. If possible, remove the assessment part for the final product.
Teachers are expected to be transparent when it comes to how they arrive at the grades. The grading system, ELGA-based or not, seeks to gauge
the performance of students based on their efforts and outputs.
9. Rubric must be properly/institutionally designed.
We hope to head into that.
10. Allow professor/teacher to be flexible and there should be no restriction as to what should be done in
the class. Academic freedom can be given to faculty in terms of teaching instructions – as long as the faculty
should not shortchange the students in terms of content.
It is the department who decides on the activities that should be done in class. There is no limitation as to the number that will be indicated in
the syllabus.
11. Faculty should have a copy of the syllabus as guide only but must be flexible depending on the type of
students we have. Let’s go back to simple syllabus. Put more leeway to the experts’ experience. ELGA can be
applied to General Education subjects such as English subjects.
The contents of the syllabus would like to capture those that are essential in the real world. The expert’s experience could be freely accommodated
as long as they relate to the contents of the syllabus, which are done by experts in the department.
12. Consultation must be done after anything of this importance is required.
There were consultations made. Please refer to the ELGA kit that was distributed to the chairs last May 4. It provides an account of how the
DLSU-D ELGAs were arrived at.
13. Class visitations must be done with ELGA in mind.
For starters, the ITEO has already been asked to incorporate the ELGA items as part of the student’s evaluation form. We hope to do that next
school year.
14. Kailangan ang pag-aangkop ng “final product” sa uri ng mga mag-aaral na gagawa. Ang pagkakaroon ng
isang klase ng proyekto sa silabus para sa lahat ng guro ay maglalagay sa alanganing sitwasyon.
This is very easy when the subject involved is a major subject. In GE subjects, the final product may be generic enough to suit the program that
the students belong to (e.g the final product may be a commercial showing the value of the field you are in in improving a chosen community)
15. It is hard to measure the attributes if the paper is in line with mathematics. Even theses do not require
that so why force them to be evident?
It would really be hard if the value of the subject cannot be found in real life situations. It would be good if the paper would cite the situation
in which the mathematical ability being developed would prove to be useful. Ultimately, we choose these subjects to be included in their curriculum
because they would be useful in the real world.
16. I would like to recommend, that since it is called “Expected Lasallian Graduate Attributes”, it should be
centralized in the whole system. There should be a common ELGA between different schools and universities/colleges
of De La Salle Philippines.
What we share are the following: faith, zeal, and communion. The ELGAs were brought out from these values, together with the LGP and the
vision-mission of the school.
