<strong>Prof</strong>. <strong>Dr</strong>. <strong>Ivan</strong> <strong>Samardžić</strong>
<strong>Ivan</strong> <strong>Samardžić</strong> <strong>was</strong> <strong>born</strong> on 6 th September, 1963, in Gornja Ljupljanica, Bosnia
and Herzegovina. He graduated from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval
Architecture in Zagreb, in January 1987. He obtained Master of Science degree in
mechanical engineering from the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval
Architecture in Zagreb, in 1991, and PhD degree in mechanical engineering from the
Technical Faculty, University of Rijeka, in 1996.
<strong>Ivan</strong> <strong>Samardžić</strong> started his professional career as mechanical engineer for quality
assurance and welding technology in January 1987 in the Đuro Đaković railway vehicles
factory in Slavonski Brod. In December 1990 he has been employed by the Mechanical
Engineering Faculty in Slavonski Brod (Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek) at
the position of assistant for welding technology. At the same Faculty he has been
promoted to assistant professor in 1997, to associate professor in 2000, to full professor
in 2003, and since 2008 he holds a title of a full professor in tenure. From 2000 to 2005
he acted as a head of the Chair for Technologies, from 2005 to 2007 he <strong>was</strong> appointed
vice-dean for education, and from 2007 to 2009 he <strong>was</strong> obtaining a function of the dean.
From 2009 to date <strong>Prof</strong>essor <strong>Samardžić</strong> is acting as a vice-rector for science,
technologies, projects, and international affairs at Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of
Osijek.
During his academic career he coordinated three national scientific & research
projects, two projects related to IT application and three bilateral projects (two with
Slovenia and one with Montenegro).
His academic and professional interests are related to welding and welding allied
techniques, involving the following: welding processes, influence of thermal fields on
welding and welding parameters, weldability of materials (structural steels, high alloyed
steels, light materials), design of welded structures, cost efficiency in welding, welding
structures under static, dynamic and thermodynamic loading, case studies of failures of
welded joints, repair welding, welding equipment, automation and robotization and
monitoring, acquisition and welding parameters data processing. Referring to the area
of quality assurance and quality control, his professional interests are focused on: causes
and avoidance of welding failures, non-destructive and destructive testing of weldments,
safety and reliability of weldments (models) and design of experiments.
<strong>Prof</strong>essor <strong>Samardžić</strong> has published over 200 scientific and professional papers in
journals and proceedings of international and national conferences. Besides academic
engagement at his home Faculty, he has been giving lectures on International welding
engineers’ education (program approved by the European Welding Federation).
He is member of professional associations: Croatian Welding Society, Croatian
Association for Production Engineering, Welding Society in Slavonski Brod and Croatian
Metallurgy Society. He is also a member of many editorial boards of different journals
and conference proceedings (deputy-main editor of the Metallurgy Journal, Croatian
Metallurgy Society; Member of the Journal for welding and allied techniques editorial
board, Croatian Welding Society; Member of the editorial board of the International
Journal of Electrical and Computer Engineering Systems, Faculty of Electrical
Engineering, University of Osijek; Member of the Manufacturing Engineering Journal

He is married and a father of three children: Mijat (16), Iva (14) and Josip (10).
