President’s
Report
As summer officially
begins, we come to
the end of the
2011/2012 year for
the Vancouver
Chapter. It’s been
my pleasure to serve
as President this
year. Despite a drop
in membership through the year, which was
experienced by all Chapters across the
Province, I believe that we had a very
successful year. We had a great line up of
events and speakers, culminating with our
60 th Anniversary celebration on May 31,
attracted a number of new sponsors and
began a review of our sponsorship that will
benefit our members in the coming years. I
had the privilege of working with a very
strong, dedicated group of people on the
Board and congratulate everyone on their
contributions to our Chapter.
The majority of the Board will be returning
next year, but we will be losing a few
members, who will be moving on to new
challenges:
Brad Cruikshank. After serving for 7
years, including two terms as President,
Brad has decided to step aside to make
room for some new faces on the Board
and concentrate on all the various
activities of the Dueck Group, which
includes not only the car dealerships, but
a hockey team, hockey arena and a
number of other businesses that keep
Brad very busy.

Doug Morison. I’m not sure how long
Doug has served on the Board, but I
know he has been there as long as I’ve
been a member. Most of the time he was
focused on events; either as a member of
the Committee or as Chair. Doug has
recently come out of his self-imposed
retirement to start up The CFO Centre in
Vancouver, the Canadian branch of a
successful UK company that provides
part-time CFO services.
Marco Falcone. Marco has only been on
the Board for the last year, but in that
time he contributed strongly to the Events
Committee and brought this strong
business sense to overall Board
discussions. Marco has decided to strike
out on his own with a new business and
needs to concentrate all his efforts there.
On behalf of all the Board and members of
the Chapter, I thank each of you for your
strong contributions over the years and
wish you well in your new endeavors.
Over the summer we will be looking to find
replacements for these three to sit on next
year’s Board.

which is comprised of Brad Cruikshank, Issa
Nahkleh and myself.
I look forward to seeing you at our first event
in September, and don`t forget about the golf
tournament on September 25 at the UBC
Golf Club.

FEI meetings are intended
to opportunities for members
to meet regularly and
make professional contacts
that develop into
friendships. Retirement does not have to mean the
end to these relationships. The chapter encourages
retired members (FEIsters) to continue networking
with old and new friends by attending the
program of speakers. Becoming a retired member
provides access to the events at a modest
cost – particularly if you can get your employer or
personal business to pay the dues.
If you’re already a retired or life member, we
hope you will be inspired to join us more often at
our regular meetings.

Recently…
Ted Butterfield, CA – has been recognized in 2012 by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of
BC as a Community Service Award winner for his outstanding contributions to the community.
He is currently the Chair and President for the Prostate Cancer Foundation BC and serves on the
Board of the Lion’s Gate Rotary Club. In the past, Ted has also served as a Board member for
the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Vancouver as well as the McMillan Space Centre. Ted also
has time to be the CFO of International Water-Guard Industries Inc. and IWG Technologies Inc.
Angela Yap, CA – she is our current Vice President for the FEI Vancouver Chapter and she recently
gave birth to her first child, Bradley. (“Congratulations Angela as well as your husband,
Travis!”).
Lawrence “Lal” Fox, CA – is celebrating his 50th year as a CA and is being recognized by the
Institute of Chartered Accountants of BC as a “50-Year Member”.
Jeremy Hooper, CA - is celebrating his 50th year as a CA and is being recognized by the Institute
of Chartered Accountants of BC as a “50-Year Member”.
John Croll, FCA - is celebrating his 60th year as a CA and is being recognized by the Institute of
Chartered Accountants of BC as a “60-Year Member”.
Fiona Leung, CA, CFP, CPA (US) – is now the CFO for Huakan International Mining Inc., which
is a junior mining company trading on the TSX-V. Fiona has worked previously with Interwrap
Inc., GLG Life Tech Corporation, Mundoro Mining Inc. and E&Y LLP.
Navida Suleman, CA – is no longer the AVP, Finance with First West Credit Union. She is now
engaged in pursuing new endeavors. Navida was formerly the Finance Director for COBS Bread
and also worked for Rogers Wireless, Intrawest and Starbucks Coffee.
Henry Lu, CA – is now the new CFO for Retirement Concepts, which is a family-owned and operated
Canadian company with 19 retirement communities and homes across BC and one in
Quebec. Henry was previously with Mosaic Homes, which is a residential property developer
based in Vancouver.
Danley Yip, CA – was elected to the 2012/2013 FEI Canada Board of Directors in June and will
also serve as the Chair of the Membership Committee for FEI Canada.

FEI Membership
Committee Report
The results are in for the FEI Canada
Membership Survey conducted in May. We
had 219 responses (representing 12.2% of
the total membership) from 1,785 members
across Canada, who received the Survey to
complete. Our members stated that the main
reasons they join and stay with FEI Canada is
the networking and quality of speakers at
meetings, followed by continuing education
requirements and updates on technical issues.
Our members also indicated that they
would like to participate in new FEI initiatives
such as roundtable discussions or virtual
meetings with content experts. The Survey
further indicated that the topics members
were most interested in were leadership &
management, followed by risk management,
IT issues and talent retention & executive
compensation.
Over the summer, FEI Canada will be working
with HEC Montreal MBA students to review
the Survey results in more detail and prepare
a report to define FEI Canada’s value proposition
and marketing plan based upon current
and future members’ needs and other leading
organizations’ practices. The report will be
presented at the September FEI Canada
Board meeting for full review and discussion.
Stay tuned for further news on the Survey and
the completed report.

Recently…
On Thursday, June 7th, we were pleased to host the Deputy Minister of Finance, Peter
Milburn. Peter focused his discussion on the following points:
BC Performance - Decade in Review: Peter's presentation culminated in the very favorable
AAA credit rating that it enjoys while many OECD countries (and Ontario) have seen significant
downgrades.
British Columbia Budget 2012: Peter's presentation on this point culminated in the current
budget's goal of balancing the budget by 2013/14.
Challenges: Peter outlined the challenges of managing spending growth in health, K-12 Education
and Post-Secondary Education. "Prudence remains important" was the message
as he illustrated the potential headwinds such as the Euro Zone and US Consensus outlooks
Looking Ahead: Peter focused on the following areas of opportunities that BC needs to exploit:
diversified export markets
competitive tax rates
sound fiscal management track record
abundant energy sources
Asia Pacific gateway
working to ensure a sustainable health care system.

Robert Half Management Resources Annual
Golf Tournament – University Golf Course
Make sure you put this date on your calendar. This year FEI Vancouver is teaming up
with Robert Half Management Resources to put on a bigger and better golf tournament.
RHMR has teamed up with the Toronto and Calgary FEI chapters for their golf
tournaments over the past several years.
We have moved the date of the Tournament from the traditional May time frame (rainy)
to the September time frame (sunny). This also gives those many golfers time to tune
up their game over the summer. With the bigger tournament, we anticipate a shotgun
start.
We will again be supporting the KidSafe charity organization.
Watch for the Tournament Notice and Registration.
