XANDER MAGAZINE: What’s your 

background in modeling? When and why did you 

get started? 

KIA LOW: My first “almost” modeling job was at 

my high school’s fashion show. I was then selected 

for “Australia’s Next Top Model Top 100” and was 

later placed into Tamblyn agency in Brisbane. Soon 

after, they signed with Next overseas. 

XM: What led you to want to be a model? 

KL: I always had an interest in the fashion industry 

but never in my wildest dreams did I think it would 

eventuate into something so big and real. I now 

model because I love learning and experiencing the 

cultures of the places I visit. I also want to make my 

future self proud–how cool will it be to be old and 

wrinkly, showing photos and telling stories about 

“the good old days to grandkids…am I getting ahead 

of myself? 

XM: Have you attended fashion modeling 

courses? 

KL: I had private walking lessons with Tamblyn. 

XM: How would you describe your style? 

KL: I definitely opt for loose clothing rather than 

tight. My closet contains a lot of strong, structured 

black pieces, but I also have a few colorful outfits for 

when I am feeling girly. 

XM: Where do you generally shop? 

KL: I like to shop around before I decide to 

commit, but my go-to shop definitely has to be Zara. 

XM: What is your nutrition like, and how often 

do you workout? 

KL: Usually I am not a lover of the gym or clean 

eating, BUT when preparing for Fashion Week or 

an important job, I try to go to the gym every day or 

two for about an hour–just cardio and light weights. 

Or Pilates is always nice. Along with going to the 

gym, I try to eat light and clean–loads of berries, 

salads, vegetables, and lean meat. 

XM: You have had the chance to travel a fair bit 

over the last couple of years. What is your favorite 

city to work in? And to live in? 

KL: I have loved all the places I have visited! They 

are all so amazing in different ways. The place I 

have spent the most time would have to be NYC. 

I love its energy – you never feel alone; shops are 

always open. Whenever you have the day off and 

have no plans, all you have to do is step outside, and 

something will draw your eye. 

XM: Describe the atmosphere when you’re on a 

shoot. Do you play music? 

KL: Usually if you’re in a studio, there will be music 

on a shoot. I find it a lot easier on shoots when the 

photographer puts music on that is reflective of the 

vibe or concept for the shoot. It makes it so much 

easier to get into character. 


XM: Do you talk with the photographer between 

shots? 

KL: You always talk to the photographer during 

shoots. If you make a nice, happy relationship with 

them it makes it less awkward and [makes for] a fun 

day. A good photographer is one that knows their 

lighting, tells you a brief before you start shooting, 

takes a stream of photos (not stopping to look at 

every one), gives some advice on ideas or if you 

should angle yourself differently. 

XM: What do you think distinguishes a good 

model from a bad one? 

KL: A good model is one that is healthy, happy, 

nice, and cheerful, a model who everyone likes 

spending time with; nothing’s worse then spending 

a day on set with someone gloomy or someone not 

talkative. 

XM: What are your goals as a model? 

KL: My goal as a model is to do the best I possibly 

can while being happy, healthy and grounded. 

XM: What is fun and rewarding about modeling? 

What do you dislike about modeling? 

KL: Love: you get to travel, meet cool people and 

you get the opportunity to be apart of a world so 

many people don’t get a chance to be apart of or 

don’t understand. 

Dislike: the industry doesn’t understand the 

concept of sleep. 

XM: Is there anything you dislike about the 

fashion industry? 

KL: The one thing about fashion is that it is forever 

changing, which makes it hard to know what’s 

around the corner. This can be exciting, but the one 

thing I wish is that you knew what was around that 

corner in advance. 

XM: How has modeling changed your life? 

KL: I feel like by modeling, I, as an individual, have 

grown. I have learned how to be independent and 

[how] to manage my finances. I have also learned 

more about myself – what I think is right and 

wrong, which I think is most important. 

XM: What advice do you have for other aspiring 

models? 

KL: Nothing comes easy, but once it starts coming, 

it will be a crazy ride; so hold on tight, go with it, and 

be true to yourself. 

XM: Do you have any exciting projects coming 

up? 

KL: This industry is so unpredictable you never 

know what jobs are coming up until the day before.

Lauren Monty is a Designer, Stylist, Fashion Writer, and Aspiring TV Host from Houston, Texas. 

She grew up making clothing for her dolls and friends in grade school. In 2010, while at the University of 

Houston, for Merchandising, she started fashion styling while asked to provide wardrobe for her photographer 

best friend’s shoot. That was when the magic began. 

Lauren has been published in a few magazines for her work, and is continuing to style editorials with various 

photographers from major cities. She will continue to design clothing, and has recently teamed up with her 

designer friend Andre Redou to create Xinn Collection, a ready to wear fitness collection for Men and Women. 

She hopes to soon show her hosting abilities on a major network, speaking about entertainment and fashion. 

She continues to work hard toward her goals in TV and entrepreneurship in the fashion industry.

Penelope Gwen is an 18 year old, self-taught makeup artist. She has become a highly popular 

and recognized artist within the online beauty community, and is known for her untamed creative style,

tutorial to help

sultry glamour of 

the 1950’s pin up girl, 

any day or night.

Beauty Tutorial 

1 

Step 1: The Base 

Over clean, moisturized skin, apply illamasqua skin base foundation all 

over the face with your favorite brush, damp sponge or even your fingers. 

Then apply LA girl pro concealer under the eyes, and any discolored areas of 

the face. Use the NYX wonder pencil to pinpoint any spots or blemishes, and 

blend these out with your fingers. 

Using the NYX contour palette, lightly contour with matte browns underneath 

the cheekbones, around the outskirts of the face, and down the sides of the nose 

(optional). Then sweep the shimmery highlight color, above the cheekbones 

and create a thin, well blended line down the bridge of the nose, to achieve a 

slim, sculpted face. 

The rest of the face can be set with the matte nude shades from the palette.

Step 2: The Brows 

Using Anastasia Beverlyhills dipbrow pomade in the 

shade of your choice (I used blonde) outline the brows with 

the shape you want to create. Fill in your brows starting 

from the outer point inwards, and use a lighter hand once 

you reach the inner section, in order for it to blend into 

your natural brow color. Use a spooly to distribute the 

product evenly through the hairs. 

3 Step 3: Cut crease 

Using a thin angled brush and Makeup Store’s Kakaw 

shadow, create a defined “cut crease” shape in the natural crease 

of the eye. Bring the cut crease into a flick that connects with 

your lash line (this will make doing your eye liner much 

more easy!) 

Once you have a defined line, blend out the brown so that 

you have a deep, smoky cut crease.

Step 4: Eye lids 

To complete your cut crease eye shadow, apply NYX infinite 

shadow stick to the bare area of the lid. Then brush NYX 

baked shadow in moonshine on top, into the inner corner 

of the eye, and beneath 5the brow bone for highlight. 

Step 5: Cat Flicks 

Using Eyeko eye do liner pen, follow the 

flicked shape at the corner of the eye created with 

the brown shadow in step 3, as a template 

for your cat flicks. Then draw a thin line as close to 

your lash 

line as possible to 

connect with the flicks.

Step 6: Flirty Lashes 

Use Eyeko eye do mascara to add volume 

to the top and bottom lashes. Then add on 

“Scandal” wicked lashes by NYX, using Duo 

lash glue on the lash band. Wait around a minute 

for the glue to become tacky 

before application. 

Step 6: Pucker up! 

To finish the look off, add Limecrime red velvet lip 

lacquer (or your favorite red lipstick) to your lips for 

a pop of bold color. If you slip up, don’t worry. Just 

neaten the edges up with concealer! Finally, spray 

on NYX matte setting spray, to keep you looking 

shine and smudge free all day!

Brow 

Do you struggle to get those “on fleek” bold, ombre 

brows you see all over instagram? 

Well don’t worry, make-up artist Penelope Gwen has your back with this 

step-by-step tutorial on how to 

get the perfect brows. 

You will need: 

A pot of Anastasia Beverly Hills Dipbrow pomade 

This product comes in a selection of colours, from blonde to auburn. 

Today, we’ll be using the shade “medium brown”. 

A tube of Concealer 

La Girl Pro conceal in the shade “natural” 

Three Brushes 

1 thin, stiff angled brow brush 

1 flat concealer brush 

1 (unused) mascara wand / spooly 

From the Royal & Langnickel 12 piece brush set.

Start with a natural, shaped brow. Trim or pluck stray 

hairs if needed. 

Step 1 

Using Anastasia Beverlyhills Dipbrow Pomade on an angled brush, outline 

the outskirts of the brow with the shape you want to create. 

Step 2 

Loosely follow your natural line, but create a high arch 3/4th’s into your 

brow, then finish with a sharp point at the end of the brow. 

Leave the first 1/4th of your brow without product to give your brows 

the ombre look. 

Step 3 

Step 4 

Fill in the outer and lower parts of the brow with the 

pomade, and start blending the product into the bulk of the 

brows. This should be the darkest area of the brows. 

Use a lighter hand once you start 

blending into the inner brow. 

Blend the product into the brow using the 

product you have left on your brush.

NT: For as long as I can remember, I have loved

XM: What was your experience like being one of

Latina? 

NT: I can't explain what it means and what it 

does to my confidence and motivation. I learned 

so much while being on Nuestra Belleza Latina. 

I am incredibly grateful for the experience and 

opportunities that will now carry through my career. 

They have given me the wings to fly high! 

XM: How did it feel to be featured among People 

en Espanol’s 50 most beautiful people? Do you 

describe yourself as humble? 

NT: Mind-blowing! I find myself earnestly 

humbled and honored to have been a part of 50 

Most Beautiful by People Magazine. I sincerely 

thank everyone who has supported me and made it 

possible.


XM: What actor/actress would you love to have a 

leading role with? 

NT: Definitely Zoe Saldana; she's fascinating! Not 

only is she uber-talented, but she has proven to all 

of us coming from the tiny island of Dominican 

Republic that no dream is too big. 

XM: What type of modeling did you begin doing 

first? 

NT: I started modeling roughly when I was 17. 

Since then I discovered a passion for the world of 

fashion and beauty. 

XM: Who in your own life inspires you? 

NT: As for me, my source of inspiration is none 

other than my beloved mother. She is my rock, and 

she has taught me so many life lessons. 

XM: How do you push yourself to keep moving 

forward in your career? 

NT: I push myself by choosing to live by these wise 

words that once spoken: "Never tell me the sky's the 

limit when there are footprints on the moon." 

XM: What would you say to little girls that aspire 

to do what you are doing? 

NT: The best advice I could offer all beautiful 

little girls is to pursue your dreams, while always 

making sure that education is put first. Education 

lays the foundation for any young woman or man's 

development. Upon having an education, you will 

be set to soar high in life.

XM: How would you describe your style? 

NT: The first thing that comes to mind is how 

elegant and poised I want to look. Therefore, I 

like to describe myself as that of a "classically" 

styled woman. I love elegant simplicity, which 

compliments my look. 

XM: When was your best outfit moment? What 

was the event? 

NT: I considered my best-dressed moment to be 

when I appeared on the red carpet at the Latin 

Grammys in a stunning dress designed by Naeem 

Khan. 

XM: Who is your favorite fashion designer? 

NT: The legendary and iconic Oscar de la Renta. 

XM: Where do you see yourself in 5 years? 

NT: Hollywood movie star! Haha. Clearly, I do not 

have a time machine so I cannot say where I will be 

5 years from now. It will be my fate, dedication, and 

hard work that will take me further. 

XM: What projects or upcoming roles can we 

expect from you this year? 

NT: This year is looking very promising. There are 

a number of prospective projects in the works that 

I am unable to share due to confidentiality of the 

project. However, I can share that I am the new face 

of It's A Wig!
