Mr. David Rousseau student of IIM, Joka, Kolkata has been visiting <strong>Kalyan</strong> <strong>Ashram</strong> Old Age Home from<br />
21 st September 2010. David comes every week to give cooking lessons to the residents of the “Home”.<br />
David has also been present on various awareness event conducted by HelpAge <strong>India</strong>.<br />
Diwali was celebrated in <strong>Kalyan</strong> <strong>Ashram</strong> with some fire works and Puja<br />
was performed in the evening. The residents also visited puja pandals in<br />
vicinity of the home.<br />

Caregivers Training <strong>Programme</strong> on Geriatric<br />
Physiotherapy & Counselling on 11 th - 12 th<br />
November 2010.<br />
The two-day training program on geriatric<br />
physiotherapy and counselling was the first of its<br />
kind organized by the age-care team in Kolkata.<br />
Inaugurated by Ms. Sharmila Majumder, Director,<br />
HelpAge <strong>India</strong>, she stressed the need for more such<br />
training programs in the future now that we have<br />
made a foray into physiotherapy care in a big way.<br />
The training was attended by caregivers and trainees<br />
from reputed NGOs’; CMIG, Navanir Home for the<br />
Aged, Womens Interlink Foundation, Nabarun Seva<br />
Niketan, CSWS, Bani Mandir and Mandra Unnayan<br />
Sansad. The module had been designed keeping in<br />
mind the role and responsibility of a caregiver and<br />
how well he/she could delegate her duties as a<br />
special caregiver.<br />
The course content included fall prevention,<br />
immobility management & geriatric physiotherapy,<br />
dementia counseling, orthopaedic condition, diet &<br />
nutrition in Old Age and the role of caregivers in<br />
palliative care.<br />
From the feedback received it has been found that<br />
the course has been very well received by the<br />
participants. They have said that the varied range of<br />
topics covered gave them a better understanding<br />
and insight on the subject and hence making them<br />
more adept in delivering the service. The facilitators<br />
ranged from a doctor from a premier cancer<br />
research institute, to a director of a gerontology<br />
institute to a psychiatrist to an orthopaedic surgeon.<br />

History<br />
She was living in a rented house with her husband at south kolkata. After husband’s death she became alone. No<br />
body was to look after her in her family. She is now a resident of an old age home( Navanir <strong>Ashram</strong>) at <strong>Chetla</strong>. She is<br />
suffering from chronic Osteo Arthritis till 10 years and she has a history of old fracture of left tibia. She can’t bear the<br />
cost for her treatment. So medicinal and therapeutic support is getting from<br />
HelpAge<strong>India</strong> at free of cost.<br />
Complaints:<br />
This patient first came to our clinic on 30 th Aug’10 with complaints of-<br />
• Severe pain and tenderness of bilateral knee joint since 6 months.<br />
• Difficulty in walking and stair climbing.<br />
History<br />

Treatment<br />
• Physiotherapy mgt<br />
1. Wax bath for 14 days and followed by S.W.D for next 7 days.<br />
2. Mobilisation of joints(Glide)<br />
3. ROM exercise<br />
4. Hamstring stretching<br />
She also advised for free active exercise, static and resisted quadriceps exercise and postural care at home.<br />
Remarks- After physiotherapy treatment for 3 weeks at our clinic her tenderness & crepitation of knee is reduced and<br />
muscle power & ROM improved. She can walk with minimal discomfort.<br />

ADVOCACY<br />
The Monthly meeting of the Senior Citizen’s Association was held on 25.11.10. The salient findings of the meeting are<br />
as follows:<br />
Consensus was reached to form a federation by the participating Senior Citizen’s Associations.<br />
By 9 th December’10 all the participating Senior Citizen’s Associations are requested to submit their<br />
suggesstions related to the State Policy On Older Person which will be discussed in the event scheduled on<br />
14 th December’10 at Birla Academy of Art & Culture.<br />
The draft application for placing a doctor once a week in every ward health centre exclusively for senior<br />
citizens has been finalised by the participating Senior Citizen’s Associations and is ready to be submitted to<br />
The Mayor, Kolkata Municipal Corporation on a suitable date.<br />
The members of the Senior Citizen’s Association’s present in the meeting were appraised about the Reverse<br />
Mortgage Loan Scheme.<br />
