The prizes? Three pair of tickets to see the Redskins
CDH Provider is First toEarn
National Accreditation!
By Donna M.Ruokonen, FFRP
NSA Annapolis
Annapolis
JanetteNazario hasput the NSAAnnapolis
Child Development Home Program “on the
map” bybeing the first on-baseCDH Provider
to earn accreditation by the National
Association of Family Child Care onJune 1,
2007. Captain Michael Fierro, Commanding
Officer of Naval Support Activity Annapolis,
presented aletter of appreciation to Nazario
atherhome recently.
Accreditation byNAFCCtoaCDH Provider
is the equivalent of the Child Development
Center earning accreditation by the National
Association for the Education of Young
Children (NAEYC)–ahighlycoveted accreditation
for child development centers, and one that parents
seek when placing children in aprogram.
Toearn this prestigious accreditation, Nazario completed
90 hours of required training (including two
hours per month through the Navy), successfully
passed both the parents’ surveys and avalidation visit
from the NAFCCteamand maintained favorable background
checks.
Meredith McCandless, CDH Program Monitor at
Annapolis, is proud ofNazario’sinitiative and accomplishment.
McCandless helped Nazario complete the
process that was started by CDC Curriculum and
Training Specialist, Vanya Torres and former CDH
Director,PeggyHarper.
“Thisaccreditation isnotgiven lightly,”McCandless
said. “Janette did the hard work completing all of the
required modules within the specified time limit. The
NAFCC visit is basically adissection of Janette’sCDH
Program inher home and everything is looked at very
carefully before an accreditation is granted,”
McCandless said.
“Although accreditation is not arequirement now,I
believe the Navy will require this of future CDH
Providers. Janette took the initiative and earned hers
and this is something she can be proud of,”
McCandless added.
Nazario’shusband, EN2 Danny Velez Acevedo from
Department,isalsoproudofwhatshe hasdone in the
twoyears she hasbeen aCDH Provider.Heisvery supportiveofherprogram, and
especiallyenjoys getting to
knowand interactwiththe children. The part he doesn’tenjoyiswhen
theyleave.
“You get attached and it’shard when parents are
transferred and the kidshavetoleave,”Acevedo said.
Nazario’s drive to become a Child Development
Home Provider started when she was ayoungster in
PuertoRico. Hermothercared forchildren in theirfamilyhome
and Janettehelped hereven upwhen she was
in high school.
She attended the Inter-AmericanUniversity in Puerto
class. Four months later they married, and when college
became unaffordable, both enlisted in the U.S.
Navy in 2000.Theirenlistmentcame 45 days aftertheir
wedding and,although theywentthrough basictraining
at Great Lakes together, they could not communicate
with each other except when they attended
church.
During her husband’sfirst assignment tothe USS
Theodore Roosevelt and with their first child on the
way,Nazario (she retained her maiden name) elected
to receive an honorable discharge and attended medical
assistant school in Virginia, graduating with high
honors. She returned to Puerto Rico during her husband’sdeployment, but
joined him in Maryland in 2005
when he wasassigned tohiscurrentduty station.
Williams is certified by the National Strength and
Tennessee as an instructor in the Physical Education
Department and implemented physical strength and
conditioning programs for the football and baseball
In his role as MWR Fitness Specialist, Williams conducts
personalfitness assessments todetermine acustomer’sindividualfitness
level based on avariety of factors
such as body composition, flexibility and cardiovascular
and muscular fitness. Once abaseline level is
established,Williams creates apersonal plan ofaction
forthe customertoachieveadesired fitness goal.
After acustomer makes an initial appointment with
Williams, the first step is tofill out aHealth Status
Questionnaireidentifying anyspecialmedicalneedsor
personal health orfitness risks that could signal acustomer’sneed
for special care. As astandard, the questionnaire
isaprecautionary liability measure to determine
if adoctor’sapproval isneeded before starting a
physicalconditioning routine.
Once the assessment is completed,Williams and the
customer identify the customer’s personal goals.
According toWilliams, these goals vary and can range
from weight loss to weight gain and from improving
flexibility to increasing endurance and muscular
strength.
Williamsisanxious tohelp people improvetheirphysicalconditioning
but knows it’simportantforcustomers
tounderstand theirrole in the conditioning process.
“My personal philosophy is that there needs tobe a
balanceofcardio and strengthtraining. I’m no miracle
worker,sothe programthatIdevelop foracustomerwill
bebased on scienceand experience,”Williamssaid and
added,“The hardworkisuptothe customer.”
Until Williams was hired, fitness consultations and
personaltrainerserviceswereperformed on acontractual
basis, however Williams brings staffing to anew
level of Navy standardsfor“in-house” certified staff.
MWR still offers comparable contractual fitness consultations
and personal trainer services. However,one
income, but recognized the need tostayathome with
theirtwochildren-JanetMarie,5and GianMichael,3.
“Ienjoyworking withkids,and if youenjoythatand
being with your own kids, then you’re aperfect candidatetodoCDH,”Nazario
said. She added,“Ilearnfrom
mykidsand the parents,too.”
Nazario thoroughly enjoys being with the children.
The favoritepart of herdayiscrafttime and being able
tositand talk withthe children. She findsthe onlydifficultpart
of running herownprogramisdealing with
parents who don’twant tofollow Navy regulations.
According to McCandless, safety is the primary concern
ofenforcing Navy regulations in child development.
Like all CDH Providers,Nazario isrequired torunher
program inaccordance with Navy regulations which
meansshe must attend anorientation and certified by
the CDH Program, maintain training requirements
(two hours monthly in various topics including child
abuse, food handling, lesson planning and more),
undergo safety, environmental and medical inspections
and receive favorable background checks. She
must alsoadheretothe US Departmentof Agriculture
Benefits of being aCDH Providerinclude earning an
thatshe canhaveuptosixchildren,including herown
Fees for CDH programs for Civilian DoD personnel
are$160 perweek perchild. ForActiveDuty,subsidized
feesrange from $50to$117and arebased on totalfamily
income. One of the newest benefits coming in
Fiscal Year 2008 isthat all fees will be subsidized and
based on totalfamilyincome,regardless of status.This
will put CDH fees on par with CDC fees, which have
been subsidized forseveralyears now.
Coast GuardAnnouncesMore
SectorNY celebrates217years of servicewiththeirannual
T
he U.S. Coast Guard has
announced ataceremony
Saturday in Grand
Haven, Mich., that it has rescued
more than one million
persons since it was established
in 1790.
"When things are at their
worst, America's Coast Guard
is at its best," said Homeland
Security Secretary Michael
Chertoff. "What began as a
revenue enforcement agency
with a fleet of ten cutters
established by Alexander
Hamilton morethan200 years
ago has evolved into the
world's premiere multi-mission,
maritime and military
service. It's fitting thatwecelebrate
the Coast Guard's 217th
birthdaythisAugust 4thaswe
recognize its brave men and
women forsaving morethan1
million livesoverthe courseof
its long and storied history."
"As America's lifesavers and
guardians of the seas, Coast Guard men and women
committhemselvesevery daytoserving our nation and
its people withselfless courage and unflinching determination,"
said Adm. Thad Allen, commandant of the
Coast Guard. "This year wecelebrate aremarkable
milestoneinour history asmorethanone million lives
have been saved by the Coast Guard since 1790.What
beganasAmerica's onlylifesavingservicechargedwith
the dangerous duty of saving sailors from shipwrecks
along our coasts hasevolved intoamodern-day,multimission
Coast Guardthatdemonstratesthe same commitmenttosaving
ago."
The Coast Guardisone of America's fivearmed forces
and traces its founding to Aug. 4, 1790, when the first
Congress authorized the construction of ten vesselsto
enforce tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and
protect the collection of the federal revenue.
Responsibilitiesadded overthe years includedhumanitarian
duties such as aiding
mariners in distress and
the service received its
presentname in 1915 when
the RevenueCutterService
merged with the US Life-
Saving Service to form a
single maritime service
dedicated to saving life at
sea and enforcing the
nation's maritimelaws.
"The saying ‘Alife lived for
others is alife worth while'
truly summarizes being a
member of the Coast
Guard," said Capt. Jim
McPherson, aCoast Guard
spokesman. "For 217 years
our brave members rowed
through the surf to save
livesorflewthrough storms
to make daring rescues.
Although the technology
has advanced the common
theme through the years is
the heroismofCoast Guard
women and men."
The number of lives
saved was calculated by the Coast Guard historian's
office through research oflogs and records from the
Coast Guard, the Revenue Cutter Service, the US Life-
Saving Service,the LighthouseServiceand otheragencies
that eventually became the modern Coast Guard.
In addition to tallying the total number of lives saved,
the historian's office has compiled alist of the top ten
rescuesin the Coast Guard's history. The list shows the
breadthofthe Coast Guard's effortstosavelivesin peril
"While thistop-ten list issubjective,itcertainlyconveys
mission,"said RearAdm. Mary Landry,directorof governmentaland
Think you know the answer? Are you sure?
Well, it’s actually the Macy’sThanksgiving
holiday season with glorious bands, balloons and
floats. Foracompletehistory of the parade,checkout
It all started in 1924 as Macy’semployees treated
Itwasin 1928thatthe famous helium-filled balloons
were first released at the end of the parade. The following
year,the balloonswerefitted withsafety values
In 1934 the Parade saw the first collaboration
As time went on and the popularity of the parade
increased, viewers now show upat Central Park on
tall skyscrapers, so bundle up and wear the extra
woolen socks. Youcanalways removelayers if the sun
The parade begins at 77th Street and Central Park
The NationalZoo:
Funforthe Whole Family
Written by Erna Petrich
T
he NationalZoo isone of
the most acclaimed
attractions in the
Washington D.C. area. It is
educational,informativeand a
fun place to visit and most
importantly,itisfree.This163-
acre zoological park islocated
on 3001 Connecticut Avenue,
NW in Washington D.C., near
the Woodley Park-Zoo/Adams
Morgan Metro Station. The
Zoo is open every day of the
year, except Christmas. The
best time to visit the zoo is in
spring,fall,orwinterwhen the
temperatures are more comfortable
and the crowds are
smaller.
Your great zoo experience
and first photo opportunity is
notatthe pen of GiantPandas,
but at the entrance ofthe zoo.
The zoo sign, big, light-gray
concrete letters spelling out
zoo, is located in the midst of
yellow and red tulips. Many
visitors stop here for the first
family photo. Just past the
entrance, banners showing
GiantPandasremind youwho
arethe most famous residents.
Mei Xiang,TianTian,and their
cub, Tai Shan are the zoo’s
most popular attraction. You
don’thave to follow the signs
to direct you tothese cuties.
Just followthe crowd.
The fame of the NationalZoo
is soenormous that the best
time to visit the zoo is in the
earlyhours (the groundsopen
at 6am). Around noontime,
lines at the Small Mammal
House and the Asian Trail are
long and the crowds move slowly.
For parents with small children,
maneuvering strollers iseasierearlier
in the day when crowds are
smaller. Lines at the restaurants
and food stands can also be endless.
For amore enjoyable experience,
it is best to bring your own
food and haveapicnic.The zoo isa
great place for apicnic and many
visitors aredoing just that.
Even in the crowdedzoo,youcan
enjoy moments of solitude behind
the Asian elephants and the Bird
House. These are sections where
you can escape the crowds, listen
to the running water from the elephant
pen and enjoy the sound of
birdshiding in the trees. Theirpenetrating,
joyous and energizing
songs are relaxing and rejuvenating.
Forchildren and adults,the zoo is
agreat choice for entertainment
and education. Before heading to
the zoo, check out the Zoo’sweb
site,www.nationalzoo.si.eduwhich
offers great information on activities
for parents and educators to
use intheir classrooms, homes or
while at the zoo. Print some of the
activitiesfrom the zoo websiteand
bring them withyou.Bothyouand
your child will bepleased withyour
learning experience. You will crave
formoreand will bebackatthe zoo
again.
The Zoo is alarge park and it is
not recommended to see all of the
exhibits in one day.Visit this magnificent
place more than once.
While stationed in Washington
D.C. area, take the opportunity to
explore, enjoy and learn about the
NationalZoo.Itwill beanunforgettable
and fun experience for the
whole family.

Be ahero –Donate your frequent flyer miles
In four years, service members and their families have been given
more than 1 1 ,000 free airline tickets through the
Fisher House Hero Miles program. The program seeks to
reunite families by providing air travel to permit wounded or
injured service members to fly home from amilitary or VA
hospital, or for their families and close friends to fly to medical
center where the wounded service member receives care.
The program has saved these heroes and their families more
than $14 million, but depends on the generosity
of frequent flyers to donate their air miles.
For more information on how you can help reunite America’s
heroes with their families and friends, go to:
