Think you know the answer? Are you sure?<br />
Well, it’s actually the Macy’sThanksgiving<br />
DayParade®! Since1924,the Parade haskicked off the<br />
holiday season with glorious bands, balloons and<br />
floats. Fora<strong>com</strong>pletehistory of the parade,checkout<br />

It all started in 1924 as Macy’semployees treated<br />
Manhattan to the city’sfirst Macy’sThanksgiving Day<br />
Parade®. The responsewassooverwhelmingthatthe<br />
founders declared itwould beanannualevent.<br />
Itwasin 1928thatthe famous helium-filled balloons<br />
were first released at the end of the parade. The following<br />
year,the balloonswerefitted withsafety values<br />
allowing them to remain airborne for several days.<br />
And,asanadded feature,areturnaddress wasplaced<br />
on the balloons. Ifyouwereluckyenough tofind one<br />
and returnittoMacy’s,youreceived aprize!<br />
In 1934 the Parade saw the first collaboration<br />
between Macy’s and the now famous Walt Disney<br />
Productions. Itwasthatyearthatsawthe introduction<br />
of the Parade’sfirst MickeyMouseballoon.<br />
As time went on and the popularity of the parade<br />
increased, viewers now show upat Central Park on<br />
Wednesday night before the big event. It’sthere that<br />
the Macy’semployees and volunteers finish blowing<br />
upthe big balloonsand the spectators <strong>com</strong>e out fora<br />
close-upviewof the event. Warning,younowhaveto<br />
getthereearlyaswell,becausemoreand morespectators<br />
showupeachyearforthisspecialoccasion.<br />
What should you bring to view the parade? Dress<br />
warm! Even if the weatherreportsareforwarmertemperatures,<br />
you have to get toyour favorite location<br />
earlytoviewthe parade. And youwill bestandingfora<br />
long time at that location. And the wind is always<br />
blowing in the canyons of NewYork City between the<br />
tall skyscrapers, so bundle up and wear the extra<br />
woolen socks. Youcanalways removelayers if the sun<br />
warmsyouup.<br />
The parade begins at 77th Street and Central Park<br />
West. It proceeds toColumbus Circle and turns onto<br />
Broadway.The Parade marches down Broadway and<br />
turns west on 34th Street, just past Macy's Herald<br />
Square. The parade finishesat7thAvenue. Forthe best<br />
viewing areas, the viewing locations are from Central<br />
ParkWest:the west side of the streetfrom 70thStreetto<br />
Columbus Circle and on the east side of the streetfrom<br />
70th to 65th Street and Broadway -between 58th and<br />
38thStreets aswell as34thStreet-the southside of the<br />
streetbetweenBroadwayand 7thAvenue.<br />

There is no public viewing or press access on<br />
Broadwayfrom 34thto38thStreet.On34thStreetfrom<br />
Broadwayto7thAvenuelimited viewingisavailable on<br />
the southside of streetonly.Toensureagood viewing<br />
location, get there early.Spectators arrive as early as<br />
6:30 a.m.<br />

the thousands of on-lookers, plan early! The Coast<br />
Guard Guest Quarters fills upquickly but we dohave<br />
overflow options. You can book with the Navy Inn at<br />
