GULF OF MEXICO
Our Early Childhood Center has partnered this
year with Little Sisters of the Assumption Family
Health Service, a community-based organization
in East Harlem. In September, twenty four-year-olds from
families engaged by Little Sisters joined our Center; most
of their families had emigrated from Puebla and Guerrero
PUEBLA
GUERRERO
in southern Mexico and are living in East Harlem. A few speak Spanish, but many speak the indigenous languages
Mixteco and Nahuatl as their primary languages. Some of the parents are now enrolling in our English for Speakers
of Other Languages (ESOL) classes, while their children attend our NAEYC-accredited full-day program.
INTERNATIONAL LUNCHEON
Our Early Childhood Center hosted their annual
International Luncheon on November 16th, a feast
celebrating the diverse cultural backgrounds of
Center families and the holiday season. Parents and
family members prepared dishes representing their
myriad cultures and countries of origin and came
together in our auditorium to enjoy the delicious
food and festive music. Countries represented at
this year’s luncheon included Mexico, Guatemala,
China, India, the Dominican Republic, Malta, Albania,
Senegal and Egypt, among others.
