Mission: To support and energize parents of school<br />

children who are served by Title I (federally subsidized)<br />

public schools with below average gains in academic,<br />

behavior and social skills. B.O.W.s provides volunteer<br />

team of parents and neighbors who build<br />

relationships, conduct scheduled activities and sponsor<br />

events to enhance educational goals, lessen the<br />

dependence on government programs, help prevent<br />

community deterioration, and deter juvenile<br />

Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers will participate in<br />

scheduled team and individual activities, aligning with<br />

the volunteers’ schedules. Activities include Boy & Girl<br />

Scouts sessions building on academic standards,<br />

character building and leadership skills. Volunteers can<br />

serve as guest speakers on various topics that outline<br />

their interests, life experiences and careers. B.O.W.s<br />

serves as the event planner for the activities.<br />

Training: Volunteers will meet the Volunteer<br />

Coordinator at the school site for orientation and to<br />

submit proper ID and scanned for the School District<br />

background check. The volunteer will be trained on<br />

the program activities and given a handout with the<br />

policies.<br />

Minimum Age: 18. Children ages 12+ can assist with<br />

program activities, especially on Saturdays.<br />

Requirements: The School District has a background<br />

check process that all volunteers will be subjected to<br />

when they come for orientation.<br />

Wish List: School supplies, awards, snacks, office<br />

supplies, books, new/used school uniform items,<br />

scouting materials.<br />

BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF<br />

Sisters accomplishes this mission, primarily through<br />

professionally supported one-to-one relationships with<br />

caring adult volunteers. The vision is to serve all<br />

tricounty area children who need and want a Big<br />

Brother or Big Sister relationship through both<br />

community- and site-based programs. We believe all<br />

children deserve the opportunity to flourish and thrive<br />

Volunteer Opportunities: Community-based program:<br />

Bigs and Littles plan community outings together<br />

based on mutual interests. They get together after<br />

work and school, on the weekends, at times that fit<br />

into everyone's schedule. School-based program: Bigs<br />

spend one hour a week with a child at a local school<br />

playing games, reading books, shooting some hoops<br />

on the playground, or participating in some other<br />

activity that the Big and the Little enjoy. It is all about<br />

taking time out to have fun with a child during the<br />

day.<br />

Training: Training is provided prior to being matched<br />

with a child. Support and training are ongoing<br />

throughout the time that you are matched with a<br />

child.<br />

Minimum Age: 18<br />

Requirements: Must be in good standing with the<br />

community, able to spend time weekly(flexible hours)<br />

for a minimum of one year.<br />

Volunteer Opportunities: Meet with women who are<br />

in crisis pregnancy situations, provide information,<br />

conduct pregnancy tests, offer resources and counsel<br />

women to carry their babies to term. General<br />

administrative work, public speaking, newsletter<br />

production, organizing baby resource room, record<br />

keeping, and fundraising opportunities are available<br />

as well.<br />

Training: Training is required and provided for new<br />

volunteers.<br />

Mission: Blissful Dreams is a horse farm where<br />

everyone is greeted with open arms and no one is<br />

judged for who they are or where they come from.<br />

Children, as well as adults, that feel they don't have a<br />

place in this world, are welcomed into building a<br />

special relationship with a special horse. Blissful<br />

Dreams provides an accepting environment that helps<br />

to develop friendships, build self-worth and establish<br />

purpose in each individual.<br />

Volunteer Opportunities: Help care for the horses and<br />

the barn, such as cleaning stalls, paddocks, and water<br />

buckets. Meet and greet the families as they arrive at<br />

the farm. Our biggest need is during the school year<br />

when we have self-contained high school students<br />

from Wando High School and North Charleston High<br />

School. Help with walking next to the horses as they<br />

ride; socializing and interacting with the students as<br />

they wait their turn to ride.<br />

Training: “Shadow” Blissful Dreams staff. We review<br />

safety procedures before each school.<br />

Minimum Age: 10, depending on the maturity level of
