Mission: To support and energize parents of school
children who are served by Title I (federally subsidized)
public schools with below average gains in academic,
behavior and social skills. B.O.W.s provides volunteer
team of parents and neighbors who build
relationships, conduct scheduled activities and sponsor
events to enhance educational goals, lessen the
dependence on government programs, help prevent
community deterioration, and deter juvenile
delinquency.

Volunteer Opportunities: Volunteers will participate in
scheduled team and individual activities, aligning with
the volunteers’ schedules. Activities include Boy & Girl
Scouts sessions building on academic standards,
character building and leadership skills. Volunteers can
serve as guest speakers on various topics that outline
their interests, life experiences and careers. B.O.W.s
serves as the event planner for the activities.
Training: Volunteers will meet the Volunteer
Coordinator at the school site for orientation and to
submit proper ID and scanned for the School District
background check. The volunteer will be trained on
the program activities and given a handout with the
policies.
Minimum Age: 18. Children ages 12+ can assist with
program activities, especially on Saturdays.
Requirements: The School District has a background
check process that all volunteers will be subjected to
when they come for orientation.
Wish List: School supplies, awards, snacks, office
supplies, books, new/used school uniform items,
scouting materials.
BIG BROTHERS BIG SISTERS OF
CAROLINA YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CENTER

caring, and competent individuals. Big Brothers Big
Sisters accomplishes this mission, primarily through
professionally supported one-to-one relationships with
caring adult volunteers. The vision is to serve all
tricounty area children who need and want a Big
Brother or Big Sister relationship through both
community- and site-based programs. We believe all
children deserve the opportunity to flourish and thrive

Volunteer Opportunities: Community-based program:
Bigs and Littles plan community outings together
based on mutual interests. They get together after
work and school, on the weekends, at times that fit
into everyone's schedule. School-based program: Bigs
spend one hour a week with a child at a local school
playing games, reading books, shooting some hoops
on the playground, or participating in some other
activity that the Big and the Little enjoy. It is all about
taking time out to have fun with a child during the
day.
Training: Training is provided prior to being matched
with a child. Support and training are ongoing
throughout the time that you are matched with a
child.
Minimum Age: 18
Requirements: Must be in good standing with the
community, able to spend time weekly(flexible hours)
for a minimum of one year.

Volunteer Opportunities: Meet with women who are
in crisis pregnancy situations, provide information,
conduct pregnancy tests, offer resources and counsel
women to carry their babies to term. General
administrative work, public speaking, newsletter
production, organizing baby resource room, record
keeping, and fundraising opportunities are available
as well.
Training: Training is required and provided for new
volunteers.

BLISSFUL DREAMS

Mission: Blissful Dreams is a horse farm where
everyone is greeted with open arms and no one is
judged for who they are or where they come from.
Children, as well as adults, that feel they don't have a
place in this world, are welcomed into building a
special relationship with a special horse. Blissful
Dreams provides an accepting environment that helps
to develop friendships, build self-worth and establish
purpose in each individual.

Volunteer Opportunities: Help care for the horses and
the barn, such as cleaning stalls, paddocks, and water
buckets. Meet and greet the families as they arrive at
the farm. Our biggest need is during the school year
when we have self-contained high school students
from Wando High School and North Charleston High
School. Help with walking next to the horses as they
ride; socializing and interacting with the students as
they wait their turn to ride.
Training: “Shadow” Blissful Dreams staff. We review
safety procedures before each school.
