Volunteer Opportunities: 60% of Nursing Home<br />

residents never get a visitor. The Friendly Visitor goes<br />

into the assigned facility for a few hours a week and<br />

visits with residents to reduce their feelings of<br />

isolation or helplessness to help educate them on<br />

their rights as a resident to help them advocate for<br />

themselves.<br />

Training: 14 to 16 hours over two days.<br />

Minimum Age: 18<br />

Requirements: Driver’s license; Criminal background<br />

check; TB test.<br />

TRIDENT LITERACY ASSOCIATION<br />

Mission: The mission of <strong>Trident</strong> Literacy Association is<br />

to increase literacy in Charleston, Berkeley and<br />

Dorchester counties by offering instruction, using a<br />

GED-preparation and basic computer use.<br />

tutoring in the subject(s) of your choice to help<br />

Training: Two-hour orientation every third Wednesday<br />

to explain our procedures and the special needs of<br />

Requirements: Volunteer babysitters must have a<br />

background check.<br />

Wish List: Office supplies such as copy paper, pencils,<br />

file folders, spiral notebooks, marble composition<br />

books; laptop computers; desktop computers that are<br />

not too old.
