It can be seen that over the period 2002 to 2006<br />
the investment in our highway infrastructure fell<br />
by over 30%. This trend was halted in 2006 /07<br />
with an increase in the previous year of 20%,<br />
however the graph below shows that the<br />
balance between the competing needs of the<br />
network and available resources is a difficult<br />
challenge.<br />

The major reduction in Bridge funding reflects the contribution to maintenance funding made as a<br />
result of the major resurfacing and refurbishment of bridge parapets on the Silver Jubilee Bridge that<br />
were undertaken prior to 2004. Further funding as part of a long-term strategy is currently under<br />
consideration by the DfT. The bid is contained in the LTP as a major scheme bid for the<br />
implementation of <strong>Halton</strong>’s 10-year maintenance strategy for the Silver Jubilee Bridge complex of<br />
structures and the outcome is still awaited.<br />
