Therefore they need to capture and replay the essence of Bournemouth. The system design must also be functional in that colours, type, icons, graphic devices etc, must be legible, inclusive and accessible. The design must work across different media (digital, print, on-street), in different environments (inside, outside, seafront, gardens, streets), at different times of day and different times of the year. And it must be brand neutral so that it can work alongside the many brands and identities that presently exist in the town. Applied© Detailed design Draft 01 System identity Typeface museo sans 500 The typeface used throughout the system is a sturdy, geometric, sans serif typeface well suited for display and text use. It also has sufficient character to help create a strong identity for Bournemouth wayfinding that can be built upon for future system development and other related projects. It is highly legible when museo sans 700 used both at small sizes on mapping and large sizes for environmental graphics. The colours of Bournemouth Bournemouth is a vibrant, festive, colourful town, which often appears near the very top of surveys when residents are asked where is the happiest place to live. The town provides people with many happy memories. The beach and gardens are natural havens, awash with both muted and vibrant colours. The festivals also bring their colour as do the millions of visitors who relax and enjoy the fun of Bournemouth. With such natural and applied colours, any multi-coloured wayfinding system would struggle to stand out. The colour palette needed to accommodate and work with the existing richness of colours rather than fight against them. White provides that blank canvas on which other colours can play. It stands out where there is a riot of colour and in the wayfinding system allows mapping, type and accent colours to come to life. White as a blank canvas also compliments Bournemouth Tourism’s recently launched ‘Colour Your Life’ campaign.
