tosecuretheconnections.Protectconnectionswithsiliconsealant<br />

UNDERGROUNDSPRINKLERSYSTEMS<br />
Therearethreecomponentsofanautomaticsprinklersystem.Thecontroller<br />
(brain),automaticvalves(zones),andthesprinklers.Thecontroller"tells"<br />
thevalveswhenandhowlongtosupplywatertothesprinklers.Eachvalve<br />
controlsagroupofsprinklersknownasazone.Eachvalveisconnected<br />
toanumberedterminalinthecontrollermarked1,2,3,etc.forthezone<br />
number.Thevalvesoperateinnumericalorderwithineachprogram,which<br />
iscalledacycle.<br />

SettingaWateringSchedule<br />
Your"WaterChamp"controllerhasprogramsA,B,andCwhichallowsyouto<br />
setthreeindependentprograms.Eachprogramcanhaveits'ownsetofstart<br />
times,runtimes,andwateringdays.Thedialselectsthedifferentprogram<br />
informationbysettingthePROGRAMswitchtothedesiredprogramtobeset<br />
oraltered.Usetheseprogramstosatisfythedifferentwateringneedsofyour<br />
landscape.DeterminewhatyouwouldliketodowithProgramA.Ifitistowater<br />
yourlawnsforexample,decidethenumberofstarttimesneeded(generallyone<br />
ortwo),andthedurationofwatering(generallyfifteenminutesorlessperzone<br />
unlessrotorsorimpactsareused).Thetotallengthofwateringtimewillbe<br />
equaltothesumofthewateringtimesforalltheoperatingzones.Watering<br />
shouldbedoneveryearlyinthemorningtoassureadequatewaterpressure,<br />
lesswinddispersal,diminishedchanceofleafburn,andreducedevaporation.<br />

thenextsectionformoredetail).Eachzonecanrunfrom1to60minutes<br />
in1minuteincrements,andfrom1hourto12hoursin10minuteincrements<br />
(generallyfordripsystems).Usethes(toincrease)ort(todecrease)buttons<br />
tosettheruntimeforeachzoneyouwishtouseintheprogramyouaresetting.<br />

EfficientRunTimes<br />
Anefficientruntimedependsuponseveralfactors:thetypeofplantsbeing<br />
watered,temperature,humidity,soiltype,slopeoflandscape,andtypeof<br />
sprinklers.Formostlawns,theamountofwaterneededperweekrangesfrom<br />
about2"inhotclimatesdownto1/2"incoolerclimates.Treesandshrubshave<br />
deeperrootstructuresandrequirelongslowwatering,whichcanbestbeapplied<br />
byshrubsprays,abubbler,oradripsystem.<br />

Highhumidityreduceswaterdemands.Ifyoursoilissandy,oryouarewatering<br />
onaslope,waterfrequentlywithshortruntimes.Claysoilholdswaterbetter,<br />
sowaterlessoftenanduseshortruntimes.Formorepreciseguidelines,check<br />
withalocalnurseryorgardeningserviceregardingyourspecificneeds.<br />
Tolearntherateatwhichyoursprinklersapplywater,doa"CanTest".Place<br />
several1lb.coffeecansorothersimilarsizecontainersevenlyacrossyour<br />
lawn.Runyoursprinklersuntiltheaveragewaterdepthinthecontainers<br />
reaches1".Recordtheruntime.Divide60minutesbythetimeyoumeasured<br />

Atabouttheone(1)o'clockpositionontherotarydialbetweenALLMANUAL<br />
andSTARTTIME1positionsisthe%sign.InthispositiontheLCDreads100%<br />
whichmeansthezoneswatertheexacttimeyouenteredintotheprogram.With<br />
thisfunction,youcanalteryourzoneruntimestomatchthemoisturedemand<br />
basedonthecurrentweather.Ifitishotanddry,youcanincreasetheruntime<br />
-coldanddamp,youcandecreasetheprogrammedruntime.Thes(up)and<br />
t(down)arrowscontrolthepercentageadjustmentupto200%ordownto10%<br />
in10%increments(steps).Foranypercentageotherthan100%,the%sign<br />
willremainintheLCDreadoutindicatingapercentageruntimeadjustment.As<br />
anexample,ifyouhadten(10)minutesonzone1andset%wateringat50<br />
%,zone1wouldwaterforfive(5)minutes.Allzonesinallprogramsareinan<br />
overridewith%watering.Itisabeneficialtooltouseforwaterconservation.<br />
Ifyoureturn%backto100%,theoriginalzoneruntimesarestillprogrammed.<br />
Thisistheeasiestwaytochangethelengthoftimeyouwater.With%watering,<br />
zoneruntimescangoasshortas10%ofone(1)minute(equivalenttosix<br />
seconds)fornurseryapplicationornewlyseededlawns.<br />
ZoneTest<br />
Bypushingboths (up)andt (down)arrowsatthesametime,azonetest<br />
startswithzone1tocheckifthereisabadzone,ashortonthewires,ora<br />
faultysolenoid.Thetesthasaten(10)seconddelaythencountsdownten(10)<br />
secondsintheLCD,thenmovestozone2andsoforth.Ifashortexists,a<br />
badzone#willbeindicatedontheLCD.Ifmultiplezonesareshorted,thebad<br />
zoneswillbeindicatedintheLCD.Badzoneswillbeskippedinthewatering<br />
cycleandreporteduntilfixed.<br />
ResetButton<br />
Ifyouwishtoresetoreraseallprogramsyouentered,besuretherotarydial<br />
isintheRUN/ALLMANUALposition,thenpushtheRESETbutton(locatedjust<br />
totheleftofthePROGRAMselectorswitch)withapentip.Yourcontroller<br />
willthencontainonlythefactorypresetprogram.Youcanthenreprogramthe<br />
CALENDARandanynewschedulesyouwish.<br />
