4.Championindoorplug-intransformerscannotbeexposedtomoistureor
weather.Theyareforindooruseonly.Noneofourcontrollersshouldbe
installedunderwater.Doingthiswillresultinseriouselectricalshock.Follow
theinstructionsinbooklet.
5.WheninstallingourIndoorWaterChamporWaterChampProfessional
controllers,pleasenotethatindoormeansexactlythat,“INDOORS”.Installing
underapatiocoverorawningisNOTindoors.Examplesof“Indoors”are
garage,basementetc.Installingourindoorunitoutdoorswilldamagetheunit
andvoidthewarranty.Thereisalsoapossibilityofelectricalshock.Ifyou
needtoinstallaunitinanoutdoorlocation,thenpurchaseanoutdoormodel

7.WaterChampandWaterChampProfessionalcontrollershavean"Off-Rain"
setting.Thissettingpreventsthecontrollersfromrunningtheirprogramas
scheduled.Theunitwillnotwateruntilthedialismovedfromthisposition.
Landscapedamagemayoccuriftheunitisleftinthe"OffRain"positionduring
warmorhotweatherorforextendedperiods.Ifyouwouldlikethecontrollers
towaterasprogrammedbesuretoreturnthedialtothe"AllManual"or

Locateyourcontrollerindoorsnearastandard110vACoutlet.The
outletshouldnotbecontrolledbyaswitchorsharethesamecircuit
withagaragedooropener,electricdryer,orotherlargeapplianceor
inductivemotor.Thelocationshouldbeprotectedfrommoistureand
temperaturesexceeding120 o Farenheit.
MountingYourController
Screwoneofthesupplied#8screwsintoawallateyelevel.Leave
1/4"ofthescrewheadextendingfromthesurface.Useananchor
boltfordrywallormasonry.Slipthebuttonholeopeningonthebackof
theboxoverthescrewhead.Openthelowerdoor.Installtwomore
screwsfromthefront,throughtheholesatthebottomofthebox.
WiringYourValves(seefig.1)
Usecolor-coded18gauge(16or14gaugecanalsobeused)plastic
jacketedsprinklerwiretoconnectthecontrollertoyourvalves.Ifyou
plantoburythewire,usearoutethatwillnotbedisturbedlaterby
digging.Eachvalvehastwowires.Useonewireforpowerandone
forcommon,itdoesn'tmatterwhichoneyouuse.
Connectthecommonwiresfromallthevalvestooneofthecolor
codedsprinklerwires(usuallythewhitewire).Connecttheotherwire
fromeachvalvetoasinglecolorcodedwire.Usewirenutsorsolder
tosecuretheconnections.Protectconnectionswithsiliconsealant
orelectricaltape.
WiringYourController(seefig.2)
Openthelowerdooronyourcontroller.Usingasmallscrewdriver,
attachthecommonwiretotheterminalmarked"COM."Attachthe
wiretotheleftsideofthescrewforbetterholding,orwrapthewire
aroundthescrew.AttachthewireforZone#1totheterminalmarked
"V1".Attachtheremainingwiresthesameway.(Attachonlyone
valveperterminal.)

(InstructionsforPumpStartandMasterValveonly)Attachonewire
fromthepumpstartrelayormastervalvetothe"MV"terminal,theother
wiretothe"COM"terminal.Topreventdamagingyourpumpintheevent
thedefaultprogramturnson,attachajumperwirefromanyunusedzone
terminaltoanoperatingzoneterminal.Thiswaythepumpwillnotoperate
againstaclosedsystem.
ConnectingtheTransformer(IndoorModels)
Attachthetransformerconnectortothetwopincircuitboardconnector.The
connectoronlyfitsoneway.Besuretheribsonthetransformerconnectorfit
overthespineonthecircuitboardconnector.DONOTforcetheconnectors
together.Useonetransformerpercontroller.

Note:OutdoorModelsHaveInternalTransformers!Turnoffthecircuit
breakerforthe110voltACcircuitthecontrollerwillbetappedinto.Attach
theblackwiretothe110volthotlead.Attachthewhitewiretothe110volt
neutrallead.Attachthegreenwiretothegroundlead.Useaprofessional
electricianifyouarenotcomfortablewithdirectwiringyourcontroller.
UNDERGROUNDSPRINKLERSYSTEMS
Therearethreecomponentsofanautomaticsprinklersystem.Thecontroller
(brain),automaticvalves(zones),andthesprinklers.Thecontroller"tells"
thevalveswhenandhowlongtosupplywatertothesprinklers.Eachvalve
controlsagroupofsprinklersknownasazone.Eachvalveisconnected
toanumberedterminalinthecontrollermarked1,2,3,etc.forthezone
number.Thevalvesoperateinnumericalorderwithineachprogram,which
iscalledacycle.
EachProgramRequiresthreebasicinstructionsasfollows:

Yourcontrollerallowsyoutosetthreeindependentprograms:A,B,andC.
Eachprogramcanhaveitsownsetofstarttimes,runtimesandwatering
days.Usetheseprogramstosatisfythedifferentwateringneedsofyour
landscape.Forexample,youmayuseprogramAtowaterthelawninthe
morningeveryotherdayfortenminutesonlyineachlawnzone.Use
programBforexample,towatershrubsonTuesdaysandSaturdaysforthirty
minutesonlyineachshrubzone.

UseprogramCfordripsystemwateringforexample,onceaweekforfour
hoursandthirtyminutesonlyineachdripzone.(Whensettingdifferent
programs,becarefultoavoidsettingastarttimeforoneprogramthatwill
beginwhileanotherprogramisstillwateringunlessusingSW2(seepage13).

Thecalendarextendsfor50years,goingfarbeyondwhatisneeded,andis
accurateforthelifeofthecontroller(includingleapyears).Withtheinternal
lithiumbattery,allprogramsandcurrenttimewillberetainedforuptoseven
(7)yearsorlongerevenwithoccasionalpowerinterruptions.Whenthe
calendarisset,thecurrentdayoftheweekwillhaveabracketaroundit.

programforeasyprogrammingandasabackupdefaultprogram.Every
zonehasten(10)minutesruntimeandisassignedtoProgramA,scheduled
towatereverydayat5:00A.M.Youcanprogramwhatyouwantoverthis
factorysetprogram,butintheeventthattheACpowerisoffandthebackup
lithiumbattery(7to9yearlife)isnolongerfunctioning,thisdefaultprogram
wouldwateryouryardasdescribedaboveoncepowerwasrestored.

SettingaWateringSchedule
Your"WaterChamp"controllerhasprogramsA,B,andCwhichallowsyouto
setthreeindependentprograms.Eachprogramcanhaveits'ownsetofstart
times,runtimes,andwateringdays.Thedialselectsthedifferentprogram
informationbysettingthePROGRAMswitchtothedesiredprogramtobeset
oraltered.Usetheseprogramstosatisfythedifferentwateringneedsofyour
landscape.DeterminewhatyouwouldliketodowithProgramA.Ifitistowater
yourlawnsforexample,decidethenumberofstarttimesneeded(generallyone
ortwo),andthedurationofwatering(generallyfifteenminutesorlessperzone
unlessrotorsorimpactsareused).Thetotallengthofwateringtimewillbe
equaltothesumofthewateringtimesforalltheoperatingzones.Watering
shouldbedoneveryearlyinthemorningtoassureadequatewaterpressure,
lesswinddispersal,diminishedchanceofleafburn,andreducedevaporation.
Wateringatnightcanpromotefungusgrowth.

Towateronspecificdaysoftheweek,rotatethedialtotheSETDAYSposition
intheWATERDAYSsegmentofthedial.SMTWTFS(Sundaythrough
Saturday)arethesevendaysoftheweekshowninthedisplay.

Usethesbuttontoadvancethroughthedaysoftheweek(thetbuttonwill
reversethroughtheweek).Theselecteddaywillblink.Ifyouwantthatparticular
daytowater,pushtheONbuttonandabox(bracket)willappeararoundthat

SettingZoneRunTimes
NextmovetherotarydialtotheZONERUNTIMEsegmentofthecontrollerso
thatitpointstothefirstzone(alsoknownasastation)thatoperatesavalvein
theareayouwantwateredinProgramA(orwhicheverprogramyouaresetting).
Thiswouldusuallybezone1.Determinehowlongyouwantthesprinklersto
waterdependingonthetypeofsprinklers(impacts:30-45minutes,pop-ups:
10-15minutes)andthetypeofvegetation(seeEFFICIENTRUNTIMESin
thenextsectionformoredetail).Eachzonecanrunfrom1to60minutes
in1minuteincrements,andfrom1hourto12hoursin10minuteincrements
(generallyfordripsystems).Usethes(toincrease)ort(todecrease)buttons
tosettheruntimeforeachzoneyouwishtouseintheprogramyouaresetting.
(NOTE:Thefactoryset/defaultprogramhaseachzonesetat10minutesin
ProgramA.Makesuretheruntimesforthezonesyouarenotusingaresetto
OFFbypressingtheOFFbuttonwhiletherotarydialispointingtothatzone).
EachzonecanONLYbeassignedtoONEprogram.Zone1forexample,can
notbeusedinProgramAandagaininProgramBorC.The10minutedefault
zoneruntimescanbechangedtoanythingfromthe10minutedefaultsetting
downto1minute,orupto12hoursbyusingthesortbuttons,andassigned
toanyprogramA,B,orCbymovingthePROGRAMswitchtotheappropriate
programandmovingthesortbuttons.
EfficientRunTimes
Anefficientruntimedependsuponseveralfactors:thetypeofplantsbeing
watered,temperature,humidity,soiltype,slopeoflandscape,andtypeof
sprinklers.Formostlawns,theamountofwaterneededperweekrangesfrom
about2"inhotclimatesdownto1/2"incoolerclimates.Treesandshrubshave
deeperrootstructuresandrequirelongslowwatering,whichcanbestbeapplied
byshrubsprays,abubbler,oradripsystem.

Highhumidityreduceswaterdemands.Ifyoursoilissandy,oryouarewatering
onaslope,waterfrequentlywithshortruntimes.Claysoilholdswaterbetter,
sowaterlessoftenanduseshortruntimes.Formorepreciseguidelines,check
withalocalnurseryorgardeningserviceregardingyourspecificneeds.
Tolearntherateatwhichyoursprinklersapplywater,doa"CanTest".Place
several1lb.coffeecansorothersimilarsizecontainersevenlyacrossyour
lawn.Runyoursprinklersuntiltheaveragewaterdepthinthecontainers
reaches1".Recordtheruntime.Divide60minutesbythetimeyoumeasured
todeterminetheaverageinchesperhouryoursprinklersdistribute(e.g.with30
min.filltime,60min.÷30min.=2inchesperhour).Usethisinformationto
planyourwateringschedule.
Plantsneedmorewaterduringhotweathermonthsandlessduringcoldweather
months.Useyourcontroller'sWATERBUDGETING(%)featuretomakeeasy,
one-stepseasonaladjustmentstoyourruntimes.
SettingAdditionalPrograms
WhenyouhavefinishedsettingthezoneruntimesforProgramA,movethe
programselectorswitchtoProgramBifyoudesireaBprogramforshrubsora
dripsystem.RepeatinstructionsforProgramAtosetProgramBbeginningwith
STARTTIMES,thenWATERDAYS,thenZONERUNTIMES.Rememberto
notoverlapSTARTTIMESbyaddingupthecombinedruntimesforallzones
inProgramAandaddthatamounttoProgramA'sSTARTTIMEtodetermine
theearliestSTARTTIMEforProgramB.Forexample,ifSTARTTIME1for
ProgramAissetto4:00A.M.andZone1runsfor10minutes,Zone2for25
minutes,Zone3for30minutes,andZone4for10minutes(allinProgramA)
thenthecombinedtotalruntimeis75minutes,thereforeProgramBcouldnot
startuntil75minutesormorepast4:00A.M.,sothefirstavailableSTARTTIME
forProgramBwouldbe5:15A.M.
ContinuingprogrammingyourWATERCHAMPcontrolleruntilyouhavecovered
allProgramsA,B,and/orCSTARTTIMES,WATERDAYS,andZONERUN
TIMESyouwish,thenreturntherotarydialtotheallmanualposition.
ImportantProgrammingNotes
TheProgramSwitchmustbeintheRUNpositionforautomaticormanual
watering,andintheA,B,orCpositiontosetprogramSTARTTIMES,WATER

Thestartofwateringisdelayedoneitherautomaticormanualrunsonevery
zone/valvebyten(10)seconds.
Note:theredLEDinthelowerleftcornerofthefaceplatelabellightsatthestart

WheneveryourcontrollerisprogrammedwithSTARTTIMES,WATERDAYS,
andZONERUNTIMESitisreadytoautomaticallywater(solongastherotary
dialisnotpointingtotheOFF/RAINposition).
ManualOperation(Turningonyoursprinklersrightnow)
Therearethreewaystoturnonyoursprinklersmanually:
1. PRESETALLPROGRAMWATERING:withtherotarydialattheALL
MANUALposition,pushtheRUNbutton.Zones1to4(or1to6
onsixstationmodels)willwaterthetimeyousetinZONERUNTIME
inProgramA,thenB,thenC.(Remembereachzonecanonlybe
assignedtooneofthethreeprogramsA,B,orC).
2. PRESETINDIVIDUALPROGRAMWATERING:Withtherotarydial
intheALLMANUALposition,pushthedesiredProgramA,B,orC
buttontowaterjustthezonesinthatprogramthepresetruntimes
youprogrammed-rememberthe10seconddelaybeforethesprin
klersstartwatering.(Note:%WateringchangesruntimesinManual
#1&#2above,butnot#3"ManualWateringASingleZone")
3. MANUALWATERINGASINGLEZONE:Movetherotaryswitchto
thezoneyouwishtowater.Ifyouwishtowaterthezoneforthe
sameamountoftimeyouhavealreadyprogrammed,pushtheRUN
buttonthenmovethedialbacktotheALLMANUALposition.Ifyou
wishtorunthezonemoreorlessthantheprogrammedruntime,
slidetheprogramswitchtotheprogramthatthezoneisinanduse
thes(toincrease)ort(todecrease)buttonstoenterthetimeyou
wishtorunthenmovetheprogramswitchbacktotheRUNposition
andpresstheRUNbuttonthenmovethedialbacktotheALLMANU
ALposition.Afterwatering,reprogramthezonetotheProgramrun
timeyouwish.
NOTE:TostopwateringatanytimepresstheOFFbuttonwiththedialintheALL
MANUAL/RUNposition.

thisfunction,youcanalteryourzoneruntimestomatchthemoisturedemand
basedonthecurrentweather.Ifitishotanddry,youcanincreasetheruntime
-coldanddamp,youcandecreasetheprogrammedruntime.Thes(up)and
t(down)arrowscontrolthepercentageadjustmentupto200%ordownto10%
in10%increments(steps).Foranypercentageotherthan100%,the%sign
willremainintheLCDreadoutindicatingapercentageruntimeadjustment.As
anexample,ifyouhadten(10)minutesonzone1andset%wateringat50
%,zone1wouldwaterforfive(5)minutes.Allzonesinallprogramsareinan
overridewith%watering.Itisabeneficialtooltouseforwaterconservation.
Ifyoureturn%backto100%,theoriginalzoneruntimesarestillprogrammed.
Thisistheeasiestwaytochangethelengthoftimeyouwater.With%watering,
zoneruntimescangoasshortas10%ofone(1)minute(equivalenttosix
seconds)fornurseryapplicationornewlyseededlawns.
ZoneTest
Bypushingboths (up)andt (down)arrowsatthesametime,azonetest
startswithzone1tocheckifthereisabadzone,ashortonthewires,ora
faultysolenoid.Thetesthasaten(10)seconddelaythencountsdownten(10)
secondsintheLCD,thenmovestozone2andsoforth.Ifashortexists,a
badzone#willbeindicatedontheLCD.Ifmultiplezonesareshorted,thebad
zoneswillbeindicatedintheLCD.Badzoneswillbeskippedinthewatering
cycleandreporteduntilfixed.
ResetButton
Ifyouwishtoresetoreraseallprogramsyouentered,besuretherotarydial
isintheRUN/ALLMANUALposition,thenpushtheRESETbutton(locatedjust
totheleftofthePROGRAMselectorswitch)withapentip.Yourcontroller
willthencontainonlythefactorypresetprogram.Youcanthenreprogramthe
CALENDARandanynewschedulesyouwish.

intoanotherprogramwith%watering/WaterBudgeting.Yourcontroller
willstackorholdthissecondprogramandstartitwhenthefirststart
timeprogramfinishes.
Programscouldrunpastmidnight(i.e.longdripsystemprograms).The
exceptiontothisisifWATERDAYSaresetonSKIPDAYSandthe

ChampionIrrigationProductshereinaftercalled“Champion”warrantsthatpartsmanufacturedbyitshallbefreefromdefectsin
materialandworkmanship,undernormaluseandservice,fora
periodofthreeyears(iveyearsondomesticbrassproducts)from
dateofpurchasetoitstradecustomers.Thisthree-yearperiodshall
beknownasthe“warrantyperiod”.Championwillfurnishorrepair
partsfoundtobedefective,duringthewarrantyperiod,atnocharge
underourdefectivereturnprocedure.Champion’sliabilityissolely
limitedtooriginalcostoftheparts,andnopaymentwillbemade
forconsequentialorincidentalcostsordamagescausedbyproduct
failure.
Championdoesnotassumeliabilityfordefectiveproductsnot
manufacturedorsuppliedbyus,eventhoughsuchproductsmaybe
usedinconjunctionwithourown.Championassumesnoliabilityfor

Championreservestherighttoredesign,alterormodifyitsproducts
