For the first six months of fiscal 2011, meanwhile, net sales at Cavco surged 117 percent to $93.3 million from $42.9 million during the same time frame of fiscal 2010. “We achieved profitability in a very difficult market environment,” stated Cavco Chairman, President, and CEO Joseph Stegmayer. “We have placed a consistent focus on developing synergies among all operations to improve sales and margins since the Fleetwood Homes business combination one year ago.” Stegmayer also expressed excitement about his newly added role as chair of the Manufactured Housing Institute for the next two years. “MHI’s primary role is to assist the entire industry in working with government regulatory authorities to assure the availability of high quality, affordable homes for people throughout the country,” he noted. “I look forward to this additional opportunity to help further the industry’s endeavors and those of our company.” From “Cavco Industries Reports Fiscal Second Quarter Results” MarketWatch (10/28/10) RADCO PRESIDENT & CEO MIKE ZIEMAN RECOGNIZED BY HUD FOR MHCC SERVICE RADCO is proud to announce that its President & CEO, Michael I. Zieman, P.E., was recently recognized for his service on HUD’s Manufactured Housing Consensus Committee (MHCC). RADCO is a recognized leader in the manufactured housing industry with more than 40 years of expertise in the areas of plan review, quality auditing, certifications and building codes. In a personal letter to Zieman, HUD’s Assistant Secretary for Housing – Federal Housing Commissioner David H. Stevens said, “On behalf of the Department of Housing and Urban Development, I wish to thank you for your service on the Manufactured Housing Consensus Committee (MHCC) and your significant contribution to the deliberations and debate in the pursuit of the public’s interest in manufactured housing. Your commitment to public service is commendable as evidenced by your untiring efforts on the MHCC’s behalf. We further commend RADCO for its complete support of your many hours of participation.” Originally appointed by HUD Secretary Mel Martinez in 2002 as one of the founding members of the MHCC, Zieman served tirelessly for more than eight years. During his entire tenure he was the only third party representative on the Committee, and served as chairperson of its Standards Subcommittee. One of Mr. Zieman’s passions was to see that the HUD’s standards for manufactured housing were updated to stay competitive with site built housing and current technologies. In this vein he helped to spearhead more than 200 code change recommendations to HUD on behalf of the MHCC. “Being able to serve HUD, the industry and its consumers on the MHCC has been a gratifying and humbling experience,” said Zieman. “It was gratifying to see how the group grew in maturity from its initial meeting where people were feeling each other out to full-blown cooperation in working together to do what is best for all stakeholders. Though the MHCC members represent diverse interest over the years most recommendations to HUD had near if not total unanimous support of all members. It was humbling to see firsthand the breadth and depth of expertise as well as the commitment that each member brought to the table. I would especially like to mention Dana Roberts who provided outstanding leadership as committee chair for many years.” ABOUT THE MHCC: The MHCC was created by Congress as a federal advisory committee with additional responsibilities. Among other things it is responsible for providing recommendations to the Secretary of HUD on the Federal manufactured housing construction and safety standards, manufactured housing installation standards and all related regulations. The 22-member committee is made up of individuals across three categories: seven producers and retailers of manufactured housing, seven users of manufactured housing, and seven general interest/public officials. IN MEMORIAM Helen L. Bertussi (June 1923 ~ September 2010) Helen Bertussi was more than a stay-at-home mother to eight children; she was a true pioneer of today’s manufactured housing industry with a career spanning over 50 years. In 1956, Helen and her husband, John, sold their family’s dairy business to purchase a 20 space trailer park in El Centro, California. After a few renovations, they moved their family to Pioneer Trailer Park and were open to the public. Business was great and Helen enjoyed housing people both long and short term, but she knew there were more opportunities within the industry. At first she bought, renovated and sold used trailer units but quickly established herself with new mobile home inventory and started Pioneer Trailer Sales, one of the first businesses of its kind. Helen established several loyal relationships with factories like continued on page 10
