Connie Lamphear – 2010
Lifetime Achievement Award
Recipient
Connie is overwhelmed at being
honored for 32 years of service to
CMHI
Connie began her career in the
mobile/manufactured housing industry
in September 1979. Hired by CMHI’s
predecessor, Western Manufactured
Housing Institute (WMHI) on a part-time
basis to prepare consumer materials
for the association’s annual Dodger
Show, she quickly became an asset to
the organization. Her part-time status
evolved into a full time position with
WMHI in December 1980 when she
took over the reigns of the mail room
and copy center.
Ms. Lamphear was in charge of
WMHI’s HUD Label Department where
she filled sales orders of required
HUD labels and shipped them to
manufacturers across the western
United States. She efficiently worked
with label producer, DecoArt, to keep
pace with the many changes required
by HUD.
Her assistance with the planning
and execution of WMHI shows,
meetings and events were instrumental
in ensuring the success of these
functions. By late 1984, she was
appointed WMHI receptionist and
administrative assistant to the president
of the association. Her loyalty and
tenacity allowed the successful
transition of WMHI to the California
Manufactured Housing Institute
(CMHI) in June of 1986. In addition
to her receptionist and administrative
assistant duties, she was appointed
director of Membership Services.
Connie completed computer courses
in word processing and Pitney Bowes
SmartMail® software programs to
assist her in mailings of member
correspondence and CMHI publications
which often totaled over 7500 pieces
per mailing. In an effort to stay up-todate
with today’s modern technology,
she also has become proficient in Excel
Spreadsheet and daily maintenance
of CMHI’s website. Ms. Lamphear
has assumed the role of association
historian, librarian and event planner
extraordinaire.
She has two grown children; son,
Bob Vogel and his wife Lisa and her
daughter, Jami and her husband, Tad
Wilson. She is the proud Grandma to
two adorable grandchildren, Trey, age 5
and Kaitlyn, age 4.
For 32 years of achievement on
behalf on CMHI members, staff and
most importantly for her concern and
assistance to our homeowners, the
2010 Lifetime Achievement Award is
well earned!
Joan Karsten Awarded 2010
Lifetime Achievement Award
A surprised Joan Karsten graciously
addresses the attendees when
presented with this well deserved honor
on December 9th.
Page 2
The first time she saw a trailer she
was nine years old with her dad who
was an accountant for a company
called Chicago Trailer House that built
shelter for the military and gypsies.
A few years later her dad, Jerry
Golden, had an opportunity to run a
trailer factory in Monrovia, CA. The
family moved there six months later and
that is how Joan’s story began.
In 1965, her dad started Golden West
Homes in Fullerton, CA. Joan’s mom
was the receptionist and made all color
choices for the homes. In 1968, Golden
West opened its second plant in Santa
Ana, CA and her mother expanded her
responsibilities to include all the interior
design. That year, Joan began working
part-time to help her mom with design
work. Later on for a Housing Show at
Dodger Stadium, Joan’s mother dared
her to decorate one of the models on
her own. She accepted the challenge,
did a “Western Theme” and the house
was sold at the show, fully furnished.
Today that house still stands in Malibu,
CA overlooking the ocean.
After many great years, Golden West
merged with Oakwood in 1994. In 1997,
after a two year sabbatical, Joan’s
husband Harry founded Karsten Homes
of New Mexico and she became the
Interior Design Manager. The company
expanded through a merger with
Harry’s brother, Andy and the Andrew
Karsten Company. They went on to
open Karsten facilities in Stayton,
Oregon and Breckenridge, Texas and
Joan’s role expanded to include design
responsibility for all the plants. After
eight successful years operating the
four Karsten facilities, Harry and Joan
joined Clayton in 2005 through its
acquisition of Karsten Homes. After,
the acquisition, Joan’s responsibilities
were expanded to include several other
Clayton owned operations such as
Golden West, Schult and Marlette.
Every product line Joan Karsten
has lent her talents to has been a
design leader in the manufactured
housing industry and there is more
to come. Joan feels fortunate that
CURRENT FIRE SPRINKLER
REQUIREMENTS
As we approach the New Year,
questions, rumors and confusion
persist concerning fire sprinkler
system requirements for manufactured
housing. Hopefully, the following
will squash the rumors and ease the
confusion:
The 2009 International Residential
Code (IRC) contains requirements for
fire sprinkler systems in all new one
and two- family dwellings.
By unanimous vote the California
State Building Standards Commission
adopted the IRC thereby incorporating
the requirement for fire sprinkler
systems into the California Residential
Code (CRC).
All new one and two-family dwelling
units subject to the CRC for which
a permit to build is issued on or after
January 1, 2011, must comply with the
Fire Sprinkler System Requirements.
Dwelling unit includes factory-built
(modular) homes.
Manufactured homes must
comply with the HUD Code and are
consequently not governed by the
requirements of the CRC.
Fire sprinkler systems may only be
required in manufactured homes in
jurisdictions that have passed, or pass
in the future, an ordinance requiring
them.
When fire sprinklers are required in
manufactured homes, the systems
must be installed pursuant to Title 25,
Division 1, Chapter 3, Sub-Chapter
2, Article 2.5: Fire Sprinkler Systems.
These preemptive regulations for
manufactured housing do not mandate
the installation of fire sprinkler systems
in all manufactured homes.
There are approximately 596
jurisdictions in California – as of
September 3rd 2010 approximately
153 of them have passed ordinances
requiring fire sprinklers in manufactured
homes.
Proposed Changes to
Manufactured Housing
Sprinkler Regulations
On September 2nd 2010, HCD
released a request for public comments
on proposed amendments to current
manufactured housing fire sprinkler
regulations.
Section 4306 of the current regulations
reads as follows:
“It is unlawful for any person to
sell, offer for sale, rent, or lease
within this state any manufactured
home or multi unit multifamily
manufactured housing home with
two dwelling units, if a fire sprinkler
system already installed or intended
to be installed in the manufactured
home or in multi unit multifamily
manufactured housing home
with two dwelling units will not
operate properly given the
water pressure available at the
proposed installation site.”
On October 13, 2010 CMHI responded
to HCD’s request for comments as
follows:
When the sale of a home does not
include the installation of the home,
the seller does not necessarily know
where or when the home is to be
Page 3
installed. This is especially true
for cash sales and the increasing
number of FOB sales.
Even when the seller knows where
the home will be installed, there
is no practical way for the seller
to know that the necessary water
pressure is available at the time of
the sale nor is there a way to ensure
that the home buyer will have the
necessary pressure available at the
time of installation. Therefore, we
believe declaring a sale an unlawful
act for a condition over which the
seller has limited or no knowledge
and absolutely no control is
inappropriate.
It is CMHI’s position that the
home purchaser would be better
protected by requiring a mandatory
disclosure, to be signed by the
prospective purchaser prior to
the signing of any purchase
documents. The disclosure should
inform the prospective purchaser
that the subject home has or may
be required to have a fire sprinkler
system and of the required water
flow and pressure necessary to
properly operate the system.
Therefore, CMHI respectfully
recommends that HCD strike the
currently proposed language in
Section 4306 and replace it with
an appropriate Fire Sprinkler
Disclosure Statement.
On November 15, 2010 HCD issued
a notice of “modifications to text of
proposed regulations” which is in
concert with CMHI’s recommendations
for Section 4306.
It is CMHI’s position that the new
language in Section 4306, if adopted,
better protects and serves the buyer
and seller of the home. We very much
appreciate the cooperative efforts from
all concerned parties.

TAXPAYER ALERT: EMAIL
SCAM TARGETS BOE
TAXPAYERS
California’s State Board of
Equalization is warning taxpayers of
a possible email scam. Several BOE
taxpayers have notified BOE that they
have received an email which appears
to be from a tax agency and states
that the taxpayer’s federal Electronic
Funds Transfer (EFT) payments did not
go through. The email then directs
the taxpayer to another website for
additional information. The email is not
from a tax agency, neither the federal
IRS nor the State BOE.
Taxpayers should not click on the link
or respond to the sender as it may be
a phishing scam. Phishing is a type of
fraud where an email that appears to
be from a trustworthy entity is used to
acquire sensitive information such as
usernames, passwords or credit card
and other personal details.
IRS is aware of this scam and has
information available at:
http://www.irs.gov/privacy/
article/0,,id=226755,00.html
Page 6
The BOE is working with the IRS to
investigate this situation. If taxpayers
have a question about a BOE EFT
payment, they may call the BOE
Taxpayer Information Section at 800-
400-7115 or the BOE’s EFT Helpline
at 916-327-4229 to inquire if their
payment has been made.
BOE suggests that taxpayers check
their bank accounts to verify account
status and whether EFT payments
have transmitted. Current normal
protocol when EFT payments are
returned unpaid is that BOE either
makes a phone call to the taxpayer or
sends a bill through the mail. The BOE
does not regularly send email notices
regarding EFT payment rejections.
Antifreeze Within Fire Sprinkler
Systems
On October 26, 2010, the State Fire
Marshall issued an Information Bulletin
concerning the use of antifreeze in fire
sprinkler systems. The following is a
summary of the new regulations:
The approved emergency regulations
will require that only pre-mixed
antifreeze solutions in concentrations
not to exceed 40% propylene
glycol and concentrations of glycerin
not exceeding 50% in residential
occupancies and other dwelling units
be permitted for the protection of
sprinkler pipe in freezing conditions.
The use of antifreeze shall only be
used as a last method for protection,
with consideration given to recorded
prolonged freezing temperatures,
and approved by the authority having
jurisdiction. This modification is
effective on January 1, 2011.
Phoenix-based Cavco Industries Inc.,
which acquired Fleetwood Homes in
August 2009, saw its financial results
improve for the 2011 second quarter
as well as for the first half of the fiscal
year. For the three-month period, the
manufactured home company posted
net sales of $45.8 million – a gain of
months of fiscal 2011, meanwhile, net
sales at Cavco surged 117 percent
to $93.3 million from $42.9 million
during the same time frame of fiscal
2010. “We achieved profitability in
a very difficult market environment,”
stated Cavco Chairman, President,
and CEO Joseph Stegmayer. “We
have placed a consistent focus on
developing synergies among all
operations to improve sales and
margins since the Fleetwood Homes
business combination one year ago.”
Stegmayer also expressed excitement
about his newly added role as chair
of the Manufactured Housing Institute
for the next two years. “MHI’s primary
role is to assist the entire industry in
working with government regulatory
authorities to assure the availability
of high quality, affordable homes for
people throughout the country,” he
noted. “I look forward to this additional
opportunity to help further the
industry’s endeavors and those of our
company.”
RADCO PRESIDENT & CEO
MIKE ZIEMAN
RECOGNIZED BY HUD FOR
MHCC SERVICE
RADCO is proud to announce that its
President & CEO, Michael I. Zieman,
P.E., was recently recognized for
his service on HUD’s Manufactured
Housing Consensus Committee
(MHCC).
RADCO is a recognized leader in the
manufactured housing industry with
more than 40 years of expertise in the
areas of plan review, quality auditing,
certifications and building codes.
In a personal letter to Zieman, HUD’s
Assistant Secretary for Housing –
Federal Housing Commissioner David
H. Stevens said, “On behalf of the
Department of Housing and Urban
Development, I wish to thank you for
your service on the Manufactured
Housing Consensus Committee
(MHCC) and your significant
contribution to the deliberations and
debate in the pursuit of the public’s
interest in manufactured housing.
Your commitment to public service is
commendable as evidenced by your
untiring efforts on the MHCC’s behalf.
We further commend RADCO for its
complete support of your many hours
of participation.”
Originally appointed by HUD
Secretary Mel Martinez in 2002 as
one of the founding members of the
MHCC, Zieman served tirelessly for
more than eight years. During his
entire tenure he was the only third party
representative on the Committee, and
served as chairperson of its Standards
Subcommittee. One of Mr. Zieman’s
passions was to see that the HUD’s
standards for manufactured housing
were updated to stay competitive
with site built housing and current
technologies. In this vein he helped to
spearhead more than 200 code change
recommendations to HUD on behalf of
the MHCC.
“Being able to serve HUD, the
industry and its consumers on the
MHCC has been a gratifying and
humbling experience,” said Zieman.
“It was gratifying to see how the group
grew in maturity from its initial meeting
where people were feeling each
other out to full-blown cooperation in
working together to do what is best for
all stakeholders. Though the MHCC
members represent diverse interest
over the years most recommendations
to HUD had near if not total unanimous
support of all members. It was
humbling to see firsthand the breadth
and depth of expertise as well as
the commitment that each member
brought to the table. I would especially
like to mention Dana Roberts who
provided outstanding leadership as
committee chair for many years.”
ABOUT THE MHCC: The MHCC
was created by Congress as a
federal advisory committee with
additional responsibilities. Among
other things it is responsible for
providing recommendations to the
Secretary of HUD on the Federal
manufactured housing construction
and safety standards, manufactured
housing installation standards
and all related regulations. The
22-member committee is made up of
individuals across three categories:
seven producers and retailers of
manufactured housing, seven users
of manufactured housing, and seven
general interest/public officials.
IN MEMORIAM
Helen L. Bertussi (June 1923 ~
September 2010)
Helen Bertussi was more than a
stay-at-home mother to eight children;
she was a true pioneer of today’s
manufactured housing industry with a
career spanning over 50 years.
In 1956, Helen and her husband,
John, sold their family’s dairy business
to purchase a 20 space trailer park
in El Centro, California. After a few
renovations, they moved their family to
Pioneer Trailer Park and were open to
the public.
Business was great and Helen
enjoyed housing people both long
and short term, but she knew there
were more opportunities within the
industry. At first she bought, renovated
and sold used trailer units but quickly
established herself with new mobile
home inventory and started Pioneer
Trailer Sales, one of the first businesses
of its kind.
Helen established several loyal
relationships with factories like
Around California continued...
Homes, Brandon by Celtic Corporation,
Viking Homes and Marlette. She
continually out sold every competitor
and was acknowledged with several
trophies and awarded with trips around
the world.
No doubt she enjoyed the perks of
her success, but mostly, she cherished
her business. She had compassion for
helping people within the community
and philanthropic dedication through
the local Soroptimist Club; an
international organization for business
and professional women.
After 25 years, her legacy continues.
From sales to construction, Pioneer
Trailer Sales remains a family affair.
Today, Pioneer Affordable Homes
is California’s oldest manufactured
housing dealership; owned by her
son, providing the most affordable
manufactured and modular living
alternatives.
At 87, Helen continued to operate
Pioneer Trailer Park maintaining close
relationships with her tenants and
business associates alike. She will be
remembered for her enthusiasm for life
and passion for business.
Young J. Paik (1930 ~ 2010)
Born in Korea in 1930, Young lived
the first 15 years of his life under
Japanese rule. When World War II
ended in 1945, Korea became a free
nation. However, when the Korean War
broke out in 1950, in Pyongyang in the
North, Young found himself saluting
a new flag with a red star. He fled to
Seoul by himself at the age of 20.
After scrounging and sometimes
stealing food to survive, he started a
vending business roasting chestnuts.
He saved enough money to enroll in
Yonsei University to pursue a degree in
physics. In postwar Korea, jobs were
scarce and he soon ran out of money
and had to leave school. Through
Heungsadan, an organization for
young people he learned of a place
called America and was drawn to it
immediately. For the next two years
he focused on obtaining a passport
and a visa. He took test after test from
the Korean government and finally in
January 1956 he arrived in the United
States.
Young worked as a dishwasher
and busboy while at the University
of Oregon, and then at the Indiana
Institute of Technology, where he
earned a degree in civil engineering in
1959.
In 1961, while working as an
engineer-in-training in Ohio, he met his
future wife, Kyung-sook Yang and they
were married.
In 1962, Young received his green
card and he and his wife packed
up and moved to Los Angeles. His
reputation as a capable engineer in the
steel industry began to evolve. After
working 12 years as an engineer for
several steel companies, he started
his own company, PACO Engineering
Corporation in 1974 offering consulting
services for steel structures.
PACO soon became the front runner
in providing welded steel beams to the
manufactured housing industry. An
idea came to Young from an empty
Coca Cola can- the “corrugated
beam”. He noticed that a flimsy
aluminum can became stronger when
it was creased vertically. He put
together the first I-Beam prototype in
his office then convinced Sumitomo of
Japan to manufacture this new beam
system with PACO being the exclusive
distributor in the United States.
Young was a major supporter of
WMHI and CMHI. He was recipient
of CMHI’s 2005 Lifetime Achievement
Award. Young is survived by his wife,
Kyung-sook. His two sons, David
and Nelson manage the day-to-day
business of PACO Engineering Corp.,
and his daughter, Marilyn is a lawyer in
San Francisco.
Young will be deeply missed and
fondly remembered for his “Everything
is possible when you put your heart
and soul into it” attitude.
Donald L. DuPar
Don DuPar, partner of Bob Angel,
Angel & Associates, passed away on
October 8, 2010 after a long battle with
cancer.
Don began his professional career as
a police officer after graduating with a
degree in Police Administration from
Golden Gate University in Sacramento
and serving in the U.S. Army for three
years. Serving with the Pasadena
Police Department from 1961-’68,
Don transferred to the Novato Police
Department until 1978 when he entered
the manufactured housing business in
retail sales with Burpee and Brekke.
When business declined, Don left the
industry for a short time. He returned a
few years later with Burpee and Brekke
and in 1986, the business prospered
and Don purchased the Brekke
interest. With the help of his wife and
children, the business continued to
succeed.
In 1988, Bob Angel became Don’s
partner and the company
continued on page 11

Around California continued...
became DuPar & Angel (now Angel &
Associates). The company continued
to grow to become the largest volume
retailer in California. Don attributed the
company’s success to”….always trying
to do their best for the customer and
the industry as a whole.”
In 2001, DuPar & Angel was awarded
Retailer of the Year by CMHI. Also in
2001, Mr. DuPar was awarded CMHI’s
Lifetime Achievement Award.
Don in survived by his wife of 49
years, Sheila and three grown children;
Jon, who still works in the business,
Cherie Adamson both of Santa Rosa
and Candace Landino of Maryland.
He also leaves behind several
grandchildren.
Don will be greatly missed by the
industry and CMHI membership.
MHI ESTABLISHES KEY
TASK FORCE
MHI’s Financial Services Division
established a regulatory reform task
force to address industry issues
surrounding the implementation of the
Consumer Finance Protection Bureau
(CFPB) authorized in the Dodd-Frank
Bill. MHI members selected to serve
on the task force include the following
members of the National Communities
Council and Financial Services
Division:
1) Tim Williams, 21st Mortgage
Corporation, Task Force Chair
2) Sheila Dey, Western MHC
Association
3) Jed Gleim, Triad Financial Services,
Inc.
4) Scott MacFarlane, U.S. Bank
Manufactured Housing Finance
5) Jeff Mouat, CU Factory Built
Lending
6) Ken Rishel, Precision Capital
Funding
7) Brad Waite, Land/Home Financial
Services
The task force is focused on three key
outcomes, including:
1) Identifying areas in the Dodd-
Frank Bill, that if unmodified, will
create significant burden upon
manufactured home owners either
by adding to the cost of acquiring a
loan or restricting the availability of
financing;
2) Identifying areas where the
CFPB has authority to develop
regulations that have the potential
to negatively impact the financing of
manufactured homes;
3) Identifying specific regulatory or
legislative remedies/language to
pitfalls identified in 1) and 2) above.
The task force will be working to
complete its analysis by December
1, 2010. The full analysis and
recommendations will be distributed to
the MHI membership.
MHI SETS INDUSTRY
PRIORITIES FOR 2011
During MHI’s 74 th Annual Meeting on
September 26-28, 2010 in Denver, CO.,
MHI members and Board of Directors
outlined priorities for the industry and
the association in preparation for 2011
and the incoming 112 th Congress.
The priorities detailed below
represent the collective input of
manufacturers, lenders, community
owners, state associations, retailers
and suppliers—the entire MHI
membership. It is important to note
that MHI’s policy focus is not limited
to this list and remains engaged on all
issues to the industry:
Priority: Financial Regulatory
Implementation and Overhaul
The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform
and Consumer Protection Act (H.R.
4173; P.L. 111-517) was enacted
into law on July 21, 2010. The law is
considered the most significant rewrite
in decades of rules governing banking
and financial services and will impact
every financial institution and credit
instrument in the nation.
One of the most visible and
significant creations of the law is the
establishment of a new independent
and autonomous Consumer Financial
Protection Bureau (CFPB) housed
within the Federal Reserve, that
will regulate all consumer financial
products and participants, including
mortgages, credit cards, banks, payday
loans and other financial products.
Initial estimates conservatively
indicate the act will require more than
240 new rulemakings, nearly 70 new
on-time reports/studies, and more
than 22 new on-going studies. This
does not include the administration of
existing regulations and laws that will
be transferred to the new CFPB—there
are nearly 20 existing consumer/
housing finance-related laws that
will now fall under the new bureau’s
jurisdiction—or existing rulemakings
that were in progress at the time of the
bureau’s inception.
Page 12
Provisions in this bill contain
significant issues for lending in our
industry. Addressing these issues, and
correcting them, will be a primary focus
in 2011.
Priority: SAFE Act
Implementation
The Dodd-Frank Bill transfers
jurisdiction and oversight of a number
of mortgage-related laws from the
Department of Housing and Urban
Development (HUD) to the CFPB.
Included in the regulatory transfer is
the shift of enforcement over the SAFE
Act from HUD to the CFPB. HUD
maintains jurisdiction over the SAFE
Act until the designated transfer date
of July 21, 2011. It is unclear if HUD
will issue a final rule on the SAFE Act.
However, regulatory oversight of the
statute will eventually shift into the
CFPB.
Achieving clarity in application and
making the SAFE Act more relevant to
the manufactured housing industry will
be a high priority in 2011.
Priority: GSE Reform and
Government’s Role in Housing
The U.S. Treasury Department
is required to submit a report to
Congress, no later than January 31,
2011, on ending the conservatorship
of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and
reforming the housing finance system.
For more than a decade, GSE* and
federal support of manufactured home
lending and finance has been limited.
Even with strong Congressional
guidance in the Housing and Economic
Recovery Act of 2008 (HERA) -- which
indicated the GSEs have a duty
to serve the finance needs of the
manufactured housing market -- little
headway has been made to push
GSEs into the business of establishing
a secondary market for manufactured
home loans secured by personal
property.
MHI must ensure that any systemprivate,
public or public-private hybrid
*Government Sponsored Enterprise
Priority: Tax Reform
Section 45L of the tax code provides
a credit of $1,000 to manufacturers of
Energy Star HUD Code manufactured
homes and $2,000 for modular homes.
The credit was originally enacted as
part of the Energy Policy Act of 2005
and for the past several years has been
extended on an annual/temporary
basis. The credit officially expired
December 31, 2009.
MHI has worked to extend the credit
for one year as part of tax extension
legislation (H.R. 4213) that was
approved by the House in May 2010.
The Senate has been unable to move
the measure due to objections over
the costs associated with extending
various tax cuts.
MHI has also worked with Sen.
Olympia Snowe (R-ME) to introduce
stand-alone legislation (S. 1637) that
would increase the credit and extend
it for three years. Congressman David
Reichert (R-WA) has introduced similar
legislation (H.R. 4226) in the House.
In 2011, MHI will work to pursue a
strategy that: 1) increases the amount
of the tax credit; 2) provides for a longterm/permanent
enactment of the tax
credit; and 3) potentially monetizes the
tax credit.
Priority: Energy Issues
In May 2010, the House adopted
legislation (H.R. 5019) endorsed by
MHI that would provide owners of
manufactured homes constructed prior
to 1976 with a rebate of up to $7,500
to use towards the purchase of a new
Energy Star qualified manufactured
home and provide up to $2,500 for
decommissioning of the old home.
The measure is based on legislation
(H.R. 1749) developed by Rep. Baron
Hill (D-IN) in collaboration with MHI.
Sen. Jon Testes (D-MT) introduced
similar legislation (S. 1320) that was
marked up by the Senate Environment
and Natural Resources Committee on
August 5, 2010.
If the measure is not adopted this
legislative session it will remain a
priority for passage during the 112 th
Congress.
Priority: EISA Energy
Efficiency Standards
The Energy Independence and
Security Act of 2007 (EISA; P.L. 110-
140) contains provisions requiring
the Department of Energy (DOE)
to establish and implement energy
efficiency standards for manufactured
housing (Sec.413).
The bill specifically tasks the
agency with developing regulations,
in consultation with the Department
of Housing and Urban Development
(HUD), that are based on “the most
recent version” of the International
Energy Conservation Code (IECC) and
that:
• take into consideration the design
and factory construction techniques of
manufactured homes
• are based on HUD-established
climate zones
• provide for alternative energy
efficiency practices
• are established by 2011 (four years
from the bill’s date of enactment)
MHI has developed a legislative
proposal that would place
responsibility for implementing energy
efficiency standards developed by
DOE within HUD and ensure that new
standards strike a balance between
energy efficiency and maximizing
housing affordability for very low- and
low-income families.
TRIAD LAUNCHES SPEEDY
MANUFACTURED HOME
LOAN APPROVALS WEB
SITE
Triad Financial, the nation’s largest
lender in the manufactured home
industry today announced the launch
of its new web site at
www.triadfs.com. The comprehensive
web site provides information and
resources to a number of Triad’s
markets including manufactured home
buyers, dealers and retailers, banks,
credit unions and realtors. Of particular
note is Triad’s fast and easy loan
approval online within minutes.
“As if loan approvals were not
difficult enough given the tight credit
restrictions in this economy…” said
Mike Glisson, President of Triad
Financial Services, “…clearly, our
goal was to make the process faster
and easier for all credit worthy home
buyers”.
Triad claims its new web site is more
visually appealing than others in the
industry – which helps potential new
home owners, dealers, realtors and
others navigate the home loan approval
process much easier. www.triadfs.com
showcases styles of homes that are
not typical of the image that the public
thinks of when they envision mobile
homes. Triad’s site also educates and
shows customers the overall benefits
of owning a manufactured home.
“That age old stigma has begun to
lift as the modern manufactured homes
have made incredible advances over
the last 20 years” said Jed Gleim,
Executive Vice President at Triad.
“For example, manufactured home
owners today can take advantage of
most upgrades available to site built
homes including wood flooring, granite
counters, Jacuzzi style tubs and more.
In this economic climate where the
customer is getting back to value and
basics, manufactured homes make a
lot of sense”.
One of the oldest and most trusted
names in the lending business, Triad
continued on page 15

Across the Nation continued...
Financial Services was named national
lender of the year for the 3 rd time in
2010 by the Manufactured Housing
Institute, the industry’s national
association and authority. Triad itself
turned 50 in 2009 and has steadily
risen to one of the top lenders in
the country over the years since its
founding in 1959 by Don Glisson
Sr. Headquartered in Jacksonville,
FL., Triad also has branch offices in
Chicago, IL., Houston, TX., Wichita,
KS. and Newport Beach, CA for a total
of 5 branch offices across the country.
“In a lot of ways we still have that
‘mom and pop’ persona: largely
because of the one-on-one way we
take care of customers and our dealer
network” said Glisson Jr., CEO of
Triad Financial Services. “We want to
keep that reputation because it’s still
very valid, but our new web site is an
extension of our image and growth
as well as our need to expand those
services”.
LET’S FINISH THE DREAM!
Along the America’s Main Street – I
80 in Elkhart, IN, a Las Vegas style sign
invites all to visit the RV/MH Hall of
Fame! A bright sign shines on a nearly
complete Hall of Fame honoring the
history and history makers in the RV
and manufactured housing industries.
Now it is time to finish the dream.
The Hall of Fame has applied for a $6
million USDA loan to construct the MH
Hall which is the final component of the
complex. The RV industry has done its
part building its beautiful display hall
despite the economic downturn. Now
it’s our turn.
The loan will retire the Hall’s $3
million debt (on an $11 million complex)
and build a 15, 000 square foot MH
Founder’s Hall. There will be 20 acres
of blacktop, lighting and improvements
for outdoor rental venues as well.
To make this all happen, the Hall
has to show that its financial house
is in order. This winter the Hall will
experience a serious cash flow
shortage. The Hall has assets that
vastly exceed its liabilities but cash
flow is another matter at the moment.
