Social and Emotional factors
that can affect development
There are 7. Could you name
any?

Gender
Gender is about how society expects
people of each sex to behave. E.g.?
So how does gender affect
development? Think jobs…

Family relationships
Primary socialisation is the first place
where an individual is socialised.
There are different types of families
Nuclear, single parent, step families
Social Class- depending on what jobs
our parents do will often determine
what jobs we do when we grow up.

Friendships- positive effects on our
development
Sharing secrets
Listening to problems
Talking together
Give support
Being trustworthy
Being reliable
Getting our jokes
When could friendships be negative?

Educational Experiences
Both genetic inheritance and where
we live can affect how good our
schooling is.
How our parents view the importance
of school will affect how well we do at
school
If you go to University you get paid
more than if you leave school at 16

Employment/unemployment
Employment is more than just having
enough money to live on, it also is
part of how we see ourselves.
Becoming unemployed can lower our
self esteem and how other people see
us. This will stop us developing how?

Ethnicity and Religion- how do
these affect our development
Ethnicity is part of someone’s culture.
Their culture may dictate how they
develop- e.g. what jobs they do.
Often people of different ethnic
backgrounds are discriminated
against. This is against the law, but
still happens.
This indirect discrimination stops
them reaching their potential. E.g.

How do life experiences affect our
development?
Getting married
Having children
Losing your parents
Losing a child
Getting divorced
All these will affect how you developcan
you give examples from 2 life
experiences?
