LETTER FROM THE PUBLISHER
HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS
My wife and I relocated to Texas in 1998 leaving
what we would best describe as our hometown
behind. We were born different places but we
both grew up in the same town. Our parents still
live about a mile away from each other and expect
us to come home for the major holidays. When
we first moved to North Texas we went back and
forth frequently but now we really only go home
during the holidays. For the first several years,
my wife would talk about moving back home. She
frequently asked, “When are we going home?”
this was always referencing our hometown. Since
we moved here, we have never spent Christmas
at our house. Every year we put up a tree and
decorate it, we put up lights and decorations then
we pack all the gifts in the car and head home.
Shake Up Your Holidays
at Gaylord Texan
The past few years my wife has made a few
comments about instead of going home taking
a holiday cruise instead but we never get past
talking about it. This year we went to visit our
parents for Thanksgiving and we have discussed
not returning for Christmas. We imagine what it
would be like not explaining to our youngest son
every year how Santa magically finds him at his
Mimi’s house. One thing recently became clear
to us, even if we drive up the road to continue
our holiday ritual we are no longer going home.
We have found our own home and it is here.
Happy holidays to all of our readers
and a prosperous and happy New Year.
Thank you,
The VISIONARY
T H RO U G H O U T
Charles D. Ames
thirty-year career
in the real estate
industry, he has
deservingly earned
the status of being
a visionary and a leader in construction,
development and management of properties.
His career started in residential properties
and now he works in both residential and
commercial development. Mr. Ames is a
team player who prefers to give the limelight
of his companies esteemed reputation to his
entire organization. C. Joseph Gampper and
Randy Holcombe are his right and left hand
at Allegiance Development and he made it
clear that the success of his company was
due to teamwork and avoiding the over use
of titles.
Low key and down to earth Mr. Ames
grew up in North Texas and currently
resides on his ranch in the 380 corridor.
He is a happily married family man
who maintains a close relationship with
his four children, two stepchildren and
three grandchildren. While discussing
the holidays, Ames expressed excitement
to have a house full and plans for friends
and family to gather around the table.
He shared that “our home is always open
to let friends and family in.” Not only do
his eyes light up when he discusses family
five
but when he talks about spending time
on the ranch the same spark is present.
With all of his success in commercial and
residential development, Ames is a Rancher
at heart and is a horse enthusiast. He loves
being out on his ranch working with his
Quarter Horses. Affectionately referring
to each horse by name as he shares pieces
of his passion about these fabulous
animals, their pedigree and the role they
play in the family.
During the time 380Guide spent
with Charles Ames, it became clear that
he seems to embrace everything in his life
with full gusto. He puts the same amount of
devotion into every venture he undertakes.
It is understandable to see why the industry
regards Ames as an innovator that pays
exceptional attention to detail. Before
Ames starts to develop a specific area, he
establishes a vision of the land weaving in
all the elements to assure becoming “good
neighbors” to the existing community.
Ames evaluates the community and listens
to the people in order to develop a space that
is harmonious with the idea and direction
the community had anticipated. “With
growth there is development,” said Ames
and the 380 corridor is a perfect example of
growth and development. As the Allegiance
Development Team develops The Villages
at Cross Roads and Rayzor Ranch, Ames
has taken great care in preserving the
spirit of Texas in the architectural facades
of each project. The large renderings on
the walls in his office show a modern
touch to a traditional Texas ambiance with
exposed metals and a natural atmosphere.
With concern for the environment,
Ames is utilizing energy efficient and
green materials for construction. The
finished projects exploit beautiful native
landscaping by local landscaper Dwayne
O’Dell. Ames has also insured the
incorporation parks, water features,
sculptures, outside dining and kiddy courts
for families to enjoy and utilize.
“Under his leadership, the Allegiance
Development has developed, built,
managed and leased more than $1 billion
in real estate in numerous states including
Colorado, Florida, North Carolina and
P A G E five
Texas. Prior to founding Allegiance
Development, Mr. Ames held a variety of
senior executive management positions
including serving as Chief Financial Officer
for a large general contractor, President
of Construction Environments, Inc. and
President of Woodcreek Construction. His
career highlights include development of
10,000 luxury multi-family units; Chateau
Plaza, a 385,000 square foot high rise
project in downtown Dallas, Bridgepoint
Joint Venture, a 140 acre development
overlooking Lake Austin and most recently
Rayzor Ranch a 410 acre master planned,
mixed use development in Denton, TX.”
said Megan M. Phillips of Total Concept
Marketing.
While Charles D. Ames has traveled
the world and developed land all over the
United States he hangs is saddle in North
Texas where his home and his heart are.
To All of Our Loyal Customers,
Come and savor traditional Italian cuisine at Aviano. It is simple cuisine, straightforward and hearty,
built around the essentials: bread, soup, pasta and olive oil. Nevertheless, simplicity in cooking offers its own
particular challenges because there is nothing to camouflage the true flavor. That is why the flavors at Aviano
are spot on and their sauces basic yet scrumptious. It is uncomplicated country Italian food made from family
recipes. Proprietor Nick Vraniqi is from a family of Restaurateurs. Nick’s parents moved to America from
Southern Italy forty-two years ago and started their family and restaurants. Nick Vraniqi is a former Marine
with a love for cooking. He opened his extension of the family restaurant in Pilot Point in January 2007. His
concept is simple and effective; good service, high-quality food in a family atmosphere at a fair price.
Aviano is located at 1340 North HWY 377 in Pilot Point and has all the essentials on the menu including,
Veal and Chicken Marsala, Shrimp Scampi, Fettuccini Alfredo and Lasagna just to name a few. The Chicken
Marsala ($9.95) is a delicious selection with a generous portion of
succulent chicken covered in mushrooms, garlic and Marsala Wine
sauce. With each entrée, you get warm bread sticks and a tossed salad
that arrives in a chilled bowl. The salad is basic but crisp and the
house dressing is a robust made with a tomato puree, oil and vinegar.
Consider sharing a side of garlic bread ($1.95) to go with your meal.
I recommend the Stuffed Mushrooms ($5.95); packed with Crab,
Lobster, breadcrumbs and Parmesan Cheese topped with a perfectly
balanced Aristocrat Sauce and Mozzarella Cheese, they are delightful.
Leave room for dessert. The Tiramisu ($4.00) is light yet creamy and
flavorful with a wonderful texture. “I never had anything at Aviano that
I did not like,” said Shelly Sanders from Attitudes, “they have consistent
good service and food.”
Neapolitan, New York and deep-dish Sicilian pizzas are also on the
menu. While I was there, I had a piece of cheese pizza (small $7.95),
which is quite possibly the best pizza I have had in the 380 corridor.
The crust was sinfully delicious and fresh. There is just the right
amount of their savory sauce covering the crust and then topped with
100% whole milk mozzarella. Do not worry, if you like Calzones or
hot or cold sub sandwiches they are on the menu as well. Aviano offers
catering services and it is a BYOB, so bring your bottle of red or your
bottle of white. Ty Belger, Aubrey Stylist, likes to have lunch there with
his coworkers. He said, “The Lasagna is my favorite, it has an old world
taste. It reminds me of my Grandmothers.”
The atmosphere is relaxed and accommodating. The seating is wood
home-style chairs and the tables have black and white checkered
tablecloths. The kitchen is open and the dinning area modestly
appointed with Italianate art, faux brick and warm yellow walls.
One thing I found very admirable is Nick’s commitment to his
restaurant and customers. If the door is open, Nick is there. He is
hands on with his staff and greets customers by name. When you enter
Aviano, you feel like you are amongst friends.

Pinot Noir
(Pee-know Na-wahr)
By David Prickett
A HOLIDAY WISH:
May you never forget
What is worth remembering
Or remember
What is best forgotten.
Vino
This season’s pick from Carmela Winery is hands down the
easiest wine to pair with daunting holiday spreads. With so many
foods on the table, it is difficult to find a wine that goes with
everything. During the holidays, it may be tempting to reach for
a white wine to serve with your holiday meal but occasionally
white wines cannot tolerate the extreme tastes of holiday dinners.
Therefore, may I recommend Pinot Noir? This wine makes an
outstanding effort to accommodate most everything served at a
holiday meal. It is also very versatile and goes well with a variety of
foods. Light bodied and silky results in Pinot Noir being enjoyable
on its own so stock up on it for your New Year‘s revelry also.
Your guests can enjoy this varietal with many of the scrumptious
foods that are traditionally prepared for the holiday gatherings.
Surprisingly it goes well with many meats and breaks the standard
rule of red wine pairing with white meats. Even if you have a variety
of meats including salmon, chicken, lamb, turkey, baked ham and
roasted duck you are safe with Pinot Noir. It also goes well with
a range of vegetables and shines in the company of veggie trays,
stuffed mushrooms, and even foods that are strong on the cloves
and cinnamon. Brie, Swiss or goat cheese and crackers pair nicely
with this versatile wine as well. However, I do not recommend
pairing Pinot Noir with fruit and super sweet desserts.
Pinot Noir is one of the oldest grape varieties for wine
production and is renowned internationally as an impressive
wine grape. Thus, you are sure to please most anyone on your
guest list. Typically, the taste has very soft tannins due to the low
level of polyphenols. Most other red wine is a rich source of these
biologically active phytochemicals, which give them the reputation
of having anti oxidant or anti cancer properties. Keep this in mind
when you toast to your health Pinot Noir may not be the optimum
red wine for that! Pinot Noir possess an intricate aroma. It is not
heavy but still rich and full-bodied with an ample flavor in spite of
its subtle nature. This wine is high in alcohol content and due to
its velvety texture it is easy to drink which could have an adverse
reaction to your holiday memories so drink responsibly.
Good Pinot Noir generates an enduring impression on the
palate and in the memory so make your Holiday gathering a
memorable experience.
“When Corry
Piéce
de
Résistance
By Jodie Linton-Prickett
It is not certain whether the word
prodigy describes Corry James but if that is
word it is something like it. In one year, he has
not the
acquired
the skills of a dancer with four to five years of
training. He has raced through the ballet
of steps and leaped over the normal
vocabulary
time frame of
what it takes to develop as a highly skilled ballet
dancer. “It takes about eight to
ballet dancer. At the rate, he
in less than five. He’s in the
of being able to overcome
on to have a professional
ten years to train a
is going he could do it
highly unusual position
a late start in ballet and go
career. His chances are excellent,”
said his instructor Hugh Nini. This is coming from a director
that knows talent when he sees it. Mr. Nini helped launch careers
such as Mark Godden, also a late starter, who went on to dance as a
soloist in the Royal Winnipeg Ballet and as an international awardwinning
choreographer. Corry excelled in high school pushing
himself to graduate two years early in order to pursue ballet. When
you meet him, he looks a little older but when you talk with him,
his maturity level is astonishing. He is extremely focused and goal
oriented. Corry’s parents support his possible future in Ballet instead
of college at this time because he has the talent and discipline it takes
to become a professional. His mother is proud of him and shared that
“Corry works with passion in every endeavor he does.”
www.380Guide.com No. 8
When Corry walks into the room he has the look you would
expect of a dancer; classical features, tall, lean and muscular stature.
His look is important because long, thin limbs emphasize the lines
of a dance, lending refinement and expression to individual moves.
His gift of the right proportions will help him (added benefits) in
the competitive world of dance. For as long as Corry can remember,
he has loved dance but his interest in ballet peaked around age
twelve. As a child, he would go after school, with his friend Nick,
to pick up Nick’s sister Cassie at the Denton Ballet Academy. He
enjoyed watching her dance and later at home, she would teach him
dance moves, “She used me as her puppet to practice dancing with,”
said Corry. He enjoyed dancing with her and learning the steps and
on one occasion, she brought him to the Academy and introduced
him as a prospective student.
He spent the last several years in a study abroad program in
Mexico. During his time there, he assisted in humanitarian work
in addition to his scholastic studies. He bonded with the locals
and absorbed the Hispanic culture. One of his favorite leisure
activities was dancing the Cumbia, a fast, loose and upbeat dance
that originated in Columbia. This dance became one of his favorite
leisure activities. Always physically active he enjoys skateboarding,
rock climbing and is willing to try most any extreme sports (except
during the time he is preparing for a performance). A little over a
year ago, Corry found himself in a discussion with his life long

friends Nick and Cassie
and asked them how
they would feel if he
pursued dance. They
offered him their
support with whatever
decision he made. With
a new determination,
Corry decided to start
ballet training and not
let the opinions of his
Corry James
other friends that were
less supportive rob him
of his dreams. Cassie of course was excited about his decision
and took him back to the studio where he had watched her dance
years ago when they were small children. She formally introduced
Corry to Hugh Nini, for the second time, and the instruction begin.
Corry started classes and excelled at a remarkable rate. “I think
the thing that surprises most ballet students in their first year of
instruction is how physically and mentally hard they have to work.
Understandably, they show up with the idea that ballet is about
costumes. When Cory showed up, he was ready, on day one, to
work hard. He’s not deterred by a challenge. It seems the greater
the challenge the more he thrives,” stated Nini, “Corry is like all of
the best students I teach. He is tireless. He can always do something
one more time, a little higher, a little stronger. I think the only time
I have ever seen him look tired is at an early morning Saturday class.
That is another way he’s like all my best students, and every other
ballet student. We don’t do our best work early.”
Capturing exquisiteness is part of the beauty of ballet making it
is easy to forget that with the splendor, there is discipline, practice,
and a considerable amount of pain. Corry is aware of the sacrifices
he will have to make for the love of his art. He trains for hours most
every day to condition his body to move in aberrant ways so when
on stage his movement appears fluid and natural. For many dancers
part of their daily regimen is a strict diet. This is not a struggle for
Corry, it was as if he was born to be a dancer; he prefers healthy
foods and never had a sweet tooth not even as a young child. Foods
that most of us consider the most enticing temptations do not
interest him.
Only the hardest working and most dedicated students make it
into a professional company and only the best of the best ever make
it to the position of solo dancer. Nini shared, “One day after class
Corry was asking me about his professional potential and I told
him that he had some and that I saw a very straight line between
where he was and where he wants to be. All he needed to do
was walk from point A to point B. He said he’d rather run. That
says everything.”
BALANCING WORK & FAMILY
DURING THE HOLIDAYS
By
Vince Ebata
i’mPossible! Dreams, Certified Dream Coach ®
Career-Life Coaching & Business Coaching
The holiday season is a joyful time, but busy calendars during the
holidays and all the inherent distractions make balancing both family and
work filled with stress. The added pressures of juggling various family
obligations with work and trying to meet holiday-shortened end-of-year
business deadlines can push you and your schedule to the breaking point.
For that reason, here’s some tips to enjoy the holidays while relieving
stress, keeping your life and work in balance and having a more meaningful,
joyful holiday season:
KEEP YOUR EXPECTATIONS REALISTIC. Don’t set personal and
professional goals too high. Anticipate a busier schedule than usual and
adjust your commitments accordingly. Don’t expect that you can attend
every holiday function, have the most beautifully decorated home, the
perfect “Martha Stewart” celebrations or the perfectly behaved children.
Resist the pressure of “doing it all” and making everything perfect.
YOU ARE IN CHARGE OF THE COMMITMENTS YOU MAKE.
Learn to say “no” – otherwise over-committing during the holidays will be
always be a nightmare and raise your level of home or work-related stress.
Holiday-related school and church events, family gatherings and extra
work events add pressure to an already busy family and work schedule. Set
priorities by figuring out what’s most important, then either delegate the
lesser priorities or just say “No thank you.” You don’t have to attend every
event just because you received an invitation.
DELEGATE HOME RESPONSIBILITIES. Prioritize and assign the
division of family responsibility between you and your spouse and include
your kids. Delegate responsibilities and, as far as the kids are concerned,
make it age appropriate. Don’t leave everything for mom to do.
LEAVE YOUR JOB AT THE WORKPLACE. At all times, but especially
during the holidays, there’s one rule that you mustn’t compromise: Leave
your job at work! By leaving your job at the workplace, you’ll free up “offtime.”
GET YOURSELF ORGANIZED. Balancing the holidays and the
demands of the job is easier if you take the time to get organized first.
Set boundaries, limitations or rules to your holiday activities; it’ll help you
keep your budget in check.
SPEND TIME WITH THE PEOPLE YOU LOVE. Holiday stress can
arise when relatives get together who don’t see each other often, but it’s a
great time for families to strengthen relationships. Quality time doesn’t
have to be a big production.
START NEW TRADITIONS THAT FIT YOUR FAMILY’S
LIFESTYLE. Families should focus on finding enjoyment in the process
of getting ready for the holidays. Create new family traditions that fit into
your family’s lifestyle. Be honest. The most special family memories can
arise out of the simplest activities.
DEAL WITH YOUR FEELINGS ABOUT THE HOLIDAYS.
Dealing with your feelings now will enable you to ease through the
season, preventing the explosions that come from built up stress due
to unreasonable expectations. The holidays can bring out extra range
of emotions, including mild stress, debilitating depression, feelings of
inadequacy, guilt of over eating and anxiety over money.
How to Manage Your Child’s
DENTAL EMERGENCY
Hwy 380 on Preston Road, across from Sonic.
A child’s teeth not only contribute
to a beautiful smile, but they provide for
adequate speech development, normal
chewing function and they impact the
growth of the jaw. When you consider
all of the essential functions your child’s
teeth serve, it becomes apparent how
important it is to know what to do if
a dental emergency occurs. The first
thirty minutes after a dental emergency
are critical. By knowing how to respond
immediately, you can make the difference
between saving or losing your child’s
tooth.
In any situation when trauma to the
face, jaws or teeth occurs, it is possible that
a more serious underlying head injury
can result. The possibility of an internal
head injury is the most important item
to evaluate. If head trauma occurs, the
first step to evaluate is your child’s mental
status. If a child loses consciousness, even
for a moment, becomes disoriented or is
nauseated, take the child to the hospital
immediately or call an ambulance. Some
of these symptoms may develop many
hours after the trauma. It is important to
closely monitor your child for 24 hours
after any head injury. If you notice any
mental changes, take your child to the
hospital immediately.
If none of the previously mentioned
symptoms are present, the second step
to take is to assess the severity of the
dental injury. Bleeding occurs with
almost all dental emergencies. In order
to adequately assess the severity, have
the child rinse gently with warm water
or gently swab the mouth clean with a
towel or washcloth. This will allow you to
determine where the bleeding originates.
If the bleeding is from a bitten tongue
or lip, keep the area clean and apply cold
compresses to control the bleeding. If the
bleeding does not stop after a short time,
take you child to the dentist or hospital.
If the bleeding originates from a
tooth or the gums, apply cold compresses
to keep swelling down and to control
the bleeding. Then call your dentist
immediately.
If a tooth is broken, rinse the mouth
with water. Keep swelling down in the
area with cold compresses applied to the
area around the tooth. Then, call your
dentist immediately.
If a tooth is knocked out, first find
the tooth. Do not scrub the tooth or
clean it with anything. Rinse the tooth
with water only! This rinse will remove
any debris. Try not to touch the root of
the tooth. Touch the crown only. If it is
possible, gently place the tooth back in
the socket and hold it with light pressure.
If this is not possible, place the tooth in
milk. Then, take you child and the tooth
to the dentist immediately.
If a tooth is displaced in the mouth,
do not try to reposition it. Call your
dentist for immediate evaluation.
If you child has any difficulty opening
or moving his jaw, the jaw may be broken.
If you suspect this, apply cold compresses
to the area to control swelling and go to
the hospital immediately.
In any dental emergency, when you
get to the dental office you can expect the
dentist to complete a full exam to assess
the teeth, gums and jaw. The dentist
will take an x-ray to look for changes
in the bone surrounding the tooth and
to evaluate the pulp, or nerve tissue, of
the tooth. Then the dentist will provide
treatment to correct any problems, take
your child out of pain and try to prevent
any further problems. When teeth are
traumatized, changes with the pulp may
occur weeks or months after the initial
injury. Your dentist will want to follow
up with your child on a regular basis.
In summary, when a dental
emergency occurs first evaluate mental
status. Second, evaluate the severity of
the injury. Last, get your child to the
appropriate medical facility immediately.
If an emergency occurs after business
hours, do not hesitate to call your dentist.
He or she will have an emergency contact
number on the recorder.
Festive
HOME
As we enter one of the busiest times
of the year, it is easy to allow your holiday
decorating to become more of a duty than a
joy. Here are just a few ideas that may help
keep your interior holiday decorating more
manageable and enjoyable.
As with just about anything, it
helps to start with a plan. Will you be
decorating several areas around your home?
Decorating in several different areas gives
you the opportunity to work in a number
of different directions without confusion.
“... decorations are
something that you and
your family can enjoy
throughout the holiday
season.”
By Patti Allen
If you are inundated with decorations that
span several years, it is probably a good idea
to separate everything by the areas in which
you will use those items.
There is no law that says you have to
use all your decorations every year. Give
yourself permission to use only the things
that are appropriate for what you are doing
this year. That alone can eliminate a huge
amount of stress as you are decorating.
Remember, it is not so much about how
much you use, but rather about how
you use it and how it makes you and your
family or guests feel in the space.
Think about each of those specific areas
you are trying to decorate. Are there specific
ideas or colors you might want to incorporate
into some of those areas? A room with a
color scheme of burgundy and gold will
obviously look great with decorated in those
same colors. A room with an interior color
scheme of cool blues and greens would look
spectacular with cool silver, blue, green and
the occasional bit of purple to accentuate the
color scheme already in place.
Besides decorating different areas in
different colors, you can also differentiate
the areas with a variety of themes. A
kitchen countertop Christmas tree might
be decorated with holiday cookie cutters,
cinnamon sticks and gingerbread ornaments.
Your little ballerina might have a small tree
in her room with ribbons, bows and ballet
ornaments. How about a tree completely
decorated with musical ornaments?
Don’t forget to
decorate items that
are already in your
home. Adding bows
with flowing ribbons
over pictures and
mirrors is an easy way
to get a more festive
look. Place holiday
throws and pillows on
sofas and upholstered
chairs. Change your
everyday placemats
and centerpiece for
Christmas placements
or table runner with a
fresh advent wreath for
both the look and the smell of the season.
Displaying favorite collections is a
great way to put your family’s unique
personality into your holiday decorating.
Placing the items of the collection together
will give the collection more emphasis and
impact. The collections can be almost
anything – nativities, angels, dolls, toy trains
or candlesticks. Using mirrors behind
or beneath your collection will add extra
sparkle and interest.
And don’t forget that life really does
go on after the holidays. Keep that special
touch in your interiors by holding on to
some of the sparkle even when December
moves into January. Beautiful candles
and candlesticks, snowmen, snowflake
ornaments and seasonal fresh floral
arrangements will keep your home festive
long after January first.
If you are still feeling overwhelmed or
stressed about the prospect of getting your
home ready for the season, professional
design services are available to help lend a
hand and give a fresh eye to your seasonal
décor. Above all, make sure your decorating
and decorations are something that you
and your family can enjoy throughout the
holiday season.
Happy Holidays
How long will a real Christmas tree
last and how do I take care of it?
Bonnie, Little Elm
If you keep it out of the heat, sun and
harsh light, water it daily, gives it stimulants,
it can last several weeks. Nevertheless, failure
to do any these will mean dead branches and
needless on the floor within days.
I find it hard to keep a New Year
Resolution do you have any advice?
Jackson, Prosper
In my opinion, these four simple steps
will help you accomplish your desired result
for lasting change and a better life.
· Take a good long look at yourself.
· See and acknowledge that you have a
problem.
· Know you have the strength to
overcome any problem.
· Then overcome it, and do better.
….and if the problem comes back….start over
again.
It is just that simple. In order for any of
us to make a change in life for the better, we
must be willing to look closely at ourselves
and recognize the problem that needs
addressed. You must be willing to see that
problem for what it is and acknowledge,
to ourselves, that we do have a problem.
Once having acknowledged the problem we
have enabled ourselves to draw upon our
inner strength, which actually enables us to
overcome it, and do better.
Why bother with New Years resolutions,
or even trying to make things better in our
life, when it seems that every time we do so,
we wind up just breaking those resolutions?
Because, in the very fact that you are willing
to look at yourself, you acknowledged the
problem and realize that you need to take
some course of action. Herein, lies the
strength to correct or change the course
of your life, and “you can if you want”.
Remember should you want to give up, do
not. Simply start over again; restate the four
points, resubmit, and with your desire you
will accomplish your goal.
Molly, I feel strongly that there
needs to be national legislation,
formal training, licensing, and felony
background checks for Bouncers. My
friend’s son was attending college
in Oklahoma and murdered in
September 2004 by a Bouncer. Her
son was not under the influence of
any kind and toxicology reports
confirm this. He was in the wrong
place at the wrong time offering an
intoxicated schoolmate a ride home.
Sadly, after doing some research,
I find that incidents such as this are
more common than I expected. Very few states have
implemented laws regarding Bouncers. It seems that
it would be the clubs responsibility to hire and instruct
their employees on how to handle a variety of situations,
however when it comes to Bouncers most clubs have
no incentive to do the appropriate training. They want
to hire the most aggressive and intimidating Bouncers
they can find, with no thought of criminal backgrounds,
basic training, or a history of mental health. It appears
their main concern is making money. I am asking, what
are the rules, regulations, any laws, responsibility or
education concerning Bouncers in Texas?
Susan, Denton, TX
That is a terribly sad story; I give my sincerest sympathy to the
family of this young man. I would also have liked to know what
happened to the bouncers. I asked some of my friends about this
one who is a veteran police officer of 21 years, my son a bouncer in
a bar during his college years, and an attorney friend. This is what
I understand to be the situation concerning bouncers in Texas.
A bouncer is not much more than a security guard and an
untrained one in most situations. They have no powers of arrest
but can protect the business and the patrons. Investigations take
place if a death occurs. They will evaluate if there was any use
excessive force in the altercation. If the force used was excessive,
the police department will conduct an investigation and the
appropriate charges brought against the Bouncer. The police
officer told me that he has investigated many cases where the
bouncers lost control and used excessive force. They are subject to
the same laws of engagement as any other private citizen. They are
not immune from charges. Finally, any force used must conform
to those regulations established in each state. All inquiries made
in your behalf followed the standards of unarmed, chemical and
armed conflicts. In any case, this certainly sounds like a criminal
case against the bouncers and owners of the bar if there is not a
conviction it certainly is a civil suit. However, not knowing all the
facts this is the most I could find out.
The Nutcracker
The beauty of ballet can be relevant
to everyone. Ballet can lure you into
another world. It can release your
spirit allowing you to escape from the
ordinary. Life should be more than
simple daily routines and acquiring
possessions. There is magic to be
found in other experiences.
The winter
holidays are the time
of family traditions.
Traditions that
have been passed
down through the
generations, and
traditions that are
born this holiday
season, become
cherished life long
memories. Denton
County has a holiday
tradition that started
in 1988, the Festival
Ballets production
of The Nutcracker.
Each December the
curtain opens for The
Nutcracker, with the
help of The Denton
Benefit League and The Greater Denton Arts
Council, at the Margo Jones Auditorium on
the Texas Woman’s University campus. Hugh
Nini founded his school, The Denton Ballet
Academy, in 1979 as a training ground for
what would become The Festival Ballet of
North Central Texas. “For Mr. Nini founding
The Festival Ballet in 1988 was the start of
a new direction, a more ambitious dream,
which led to the tradition now known as The
Nutcracker”, said Sue Bancroft president of
The Festival Ballet’s board of directors. Now
in his twentieth year as the Artistic Director of
The Festival Ballet, Mr. Nini has established
it as a ballet company with a reputation of
excellence and consistency.
The Nutcracker is often a child’s first
introduction to ballet and frequently their
first experience with live theater all together.
It is not unusual for The Nutcracker to play
a major role in family traditions around the
holidays. In this day and age of TV, video,
and movies, experiencing the magic of a live
performance is one of the most rewarding
ways to spend an afternoon or evening with
your children. Furthermore, seeing a ballet
can be a stimulating and educational event
for the whole family. You will see that ballet
should be a part of every childhood. It is as
important as reading in helping develop a
child’s imagination.
Ballet is put into two main categories,
repertory pieces, which are short and might
or might not have a plot, and full-length, or
“story ballets,” which characteristically have
a plot, scenery, costumes and characters .
Whilst children can enjoy both types of
ballets, the full-length piece such as The
Nutcracker is almost guaranteed to captivate
them.
Here are some pointers on how to groom
your children for an excursion to the ballet.
If you are planning to see a story ballet,
talk about the show and the story prior to the
performance. Consider telling it as a bedtime
story a few nights before. Most story ballets,
including The Nutcracker, have a book that
tells the story. We had great success with
reading the Nutcracker to our son and it
became his favorite book.
Explain to your child that in ballet, there
are no words. The storyline reveals itself
through the choreography, (steps, movement,
and mime), and the characters interactions.
The Nutcracker is about a young girl
named Clara. She is at her family’s Christmas
party where her godfather, Herr Drosselmeyer
bestows her with a magical Nutcracker doll.
Later that night, while sleeping, she dreams
her house is overrun with mice, and that toy
soldiers come to life to save her, and of her
hero, The Nutcracker, who whisks her away
through the ice and snow to the far off land of
the Sugar Plum Fairy where more excitement
lies ahead.
This is a wonderful opportunity to
explain and instill theatre etiquette to your
kids. Children may presuppose that they
should conduct themselves the way they
would at a sporting event or a movie theater.
In a way, they can. Of course, they laugh at
the funny parts and applaud whenever they
see something they like. Nevertheless, they
www.380Guide.com No. 20
By Jodie Linton-Prickett
should also know that they should not talk
while the curtain is up, they should remain
seated during the performance and they
cannot eat or drink anything in the theatre.
It is customary at a ballet performance to
applaud when the leading female and male
dancers first appear on stage, and when a
dancer or group of dancers finishes a dance.
Audience members like to applaud when a
dancer does moves that are complicated,
such as high jumps or a sequence of turns in
a row. At the end of the show when all the
dancers take their bows, everyone applauds.
Be sure to tell the little ones about standing
ovations. The audience will show the
approval of an extraordinary performance of
particularly high acclaim by rising to their feet
while clapping. “Because we perform live in
front of an audience we always appreciate
a well mannered audience. However, when
ballet works the way it is designed to there
are no rules about applause. The dancers,
the music, and the story itself, compel the
audience to applaud. Therefore, whenever
you feel like applauding is appropriate. The
dancers appreciate it,” said Artistic Director
Hugh Nini.
When the performance is over, talks
about it encourage your children to ask
questions and discuss their observations.
Children love to meet the actors they just saw
performing, and most actors are delighted to
meet the audience and to sign autographs.
Wait by the stage door to meet the cast.
However, remember, they have just finished
a hard job, and if you have seen a matinee,
they may have to be back again in an hour,
so do not keep them too long.
Yes, children can meet the performers and
get their autographs after The Festival Ballets
Sunday matinee. Souvenirs are available
before the show, during intermission, and
after the show just outside the theater doors.
Both are a big event. There is always a
film crew during the autograph event,
which takes place outside in the lobby as
people exit.
The biggest taboo of wearing makeup is sleeping in it; you damage your skin, clog your pores and ruin
your pillowcases. That taboo my friend may be on its way to becoming an urban legend. As more women
turn to permanent cosmetics sleeping in makeup is just part of the fun. Waking up with lipstick and
eyeliner on just the way it was when you went to bed is an additional thrill. Women not only save time
by not having to apply and touch up their makeup each day they can also swim, workout and still look
fabulous. Lynda Cabell, Medical Aesthetician, also pointed out there are added benefits for women who
have difficulty putting on makeup due to vision problems, contact wearers and medical issues such as
Arthritis, Fibromyalgia and Multiple Sclerosis. Kimberly, who has had Fibromyalgia for several years said,
“I enjoy wearing makeup but avoid it due to the intricacy of its application. Gripping makeup apparatus
such as tubes and pencils is very difficult. I can see how permanent
makeup would be a great benefit.” Permanent cosmetics can also fix
natures mistakes by providing skin repigmentation due to birthmarks
or reconstructive surgery (including mastectomies and cleft lip) as well as
burns and stretch marks. Permanent makeup is a form of a tattoo;
Lynda describes it as “a process in which a small amount of pigment
is implanted in the dermis layer of the skin to create an illusion or
enhancement where hair or color is missing. Before you consider any
cosmetic procedure, you should ask questions and go to a professional
that is comfortable with your questions and willing to answer all of
them. “I encourage questions from anyone considering any procedure
I offer,” said Lynda. Two of the first questions most people ask are:
WHAT SHOULD I KNOW ABOUT STERILIZATION, SANITATION,
AND INFECTION?
Please be assured that your health and safety are of utmost importance.
Sanitary surroundings, sterile equipment, disposable needles, and quality
products are necessary for permanent cosmetic procedures.
IS THERE DISCOMFORT INVOLVED?
In the most delicate areas, some discomfort may be experienced. The use of
topical anesthetic helps to lessen any discomfort. If you are apprehensive,
your physician may prescribe medication for you to take prior to your
treatment. If you decide to take medications that prohibit your ability to
drive, please arrange for transportation to and from your appointment.
Everyone has a different threshold of pain but most people find that overall
the discomfort is short lived in exchange for the long term reward that you
get from the procedure.
both genders in their marketing campaign
and their original image seemed to exude
the handy man image more than that of a
serious remodeling company. Therefore, they
commenced a remodel of their own for their
business. They decided on renaming their
company, creating a contemporary image
and a more urbane marketing strategy. Now,
J&J General Contracting is a distant memory
and Home Artisan Authority is
the company to watch. They excel
in providing workable solutions
for home makeovers, remodels,
commercial build outs and
custom building. “Our real forte
is converting kitchens, bathrooms
and entire homes to beautiful and
innovative creations, from the
design stage to final finish-out,”
states Wood. The men credit their
company’s success to building
a team of subcontractors. “Our
subcontractors have worked with
the company since the beginning.
We have a talented team of
professional craftsmen who know
we are a solid company that will
bring great projects to the table and we pay
them in a timely manner,” says Wood. “That’s
absolutely imperative!”
Home Builders Association of Greater
Dallas is one of the leading builder
associations in the nation. One of the most
desirable awards in custom building and
remodeling is one of the acclaimed Vesta
Awards, which acknowledge distinction and
quality. “We were surprised and every happy
to receive Vesta’s top award for remodelers,”
says Tyler Wood, “We were competing with
some of the best-known names in North
Texas, so we feel enormously grateful for
this honor.”
Their company credo “We are an old
school business, honest craftsmen and we do
what we say we’re going to do.” Tom Sadler, an
officer with HBA and one of the founders of the
Vesta Awards said, “Tyler and Jim are rapidly
building a reputation as one of North Texas’
top remodeling professionals. Their quality
of work and professionalism is outstanding,
and for a three-year-old operation, their
achievements are very impressive.”
FAMILY RECIPE
HOLIDAY PUMPKIN ROLL
From the kitchen of Betty Taylor
PREP TIME: 2 hours prep
COOK TIME: 15 minutes
Preheat Oven 375 • Freezes Well
INGREDIENTS:
• 3 eggs
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 2/3 cup pumpkin puree
• 1 teaspoon lemon juice
• 3/4 cup flour
• 1 teaspoon baking powder
• 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
• 1 teaspoon ground ginger (optional)
• 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 1 cup finely chopped pecans
• confectioners’ sugar
FILLING:
• 1 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar
• 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
• 4 tablespoons butter
• 3/4 teaspoon vanilla (I add a splash more)
• milk or cream as needed
PREPARATION:
In a mixing bowl beat eggs on high
speed of electric mixer and gradually
beat in sugar, beating until light and
lemon colored. Stir in the pumpkin and
lemon juice.
In a separate bowl, sift together the
flour, baking powder, spices, and salt.
Fold flour mixture into the pumpkin
batter. Spread in a generously greased
and floured 10x15-inch jellyroll pan.
Top with the chopped pecans. Bake in a
preheated 375° oven for 15 minutes, or
until cake bounces back when touched
lightly with finger. Generously sprinkle
a clean dishtowel with powdered sugar
and turn cake out onto it. Starting at
narrow end, roll towel and cake up
together; cool. Unroll.
Combine the 1 1/2 cups
confectioners’ sugar, cream cheese,
butter, and vanilla; beat until smooth,
adding milk or cream if mixture is too
stiff. Spread over the cooled cake and
roll up. Chill.
For garnish, I like to sprinkle a little
extra powdered sugar and/or nutmeg
around the edges of the serving platter.
EGGNOG
SERVINGS: 12
PREP TIME: 20 Minutes • COOK TIME: 8 minutes
READY TO SERVE: 6 ½ hours
INGREDIENTS
• 4 cups milk
• 5 whole cloves
• 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
• 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or cinnamon sticks)
• 12 egg yolks
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 2 cups light rum (optional)
• 4 cups light cream
• 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
• 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
DIRECTIONS
Combine milk, cloves, 1/2 teaspoon vanilla, and cinnamon in
a saucepan, and heat over lowest setting for 5 minutes. Slowly
bring milk mixture to a boil.
In a large bowl, combine egg yolks and sugar. Whisk together
until fluffy. Whisk hot milk mixture slowly into the eggs. Pour
mixture into saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring
constantly for 3 minutes, or until thick. Do not allow mixture to
boil. Strain to remove cloves, and let cool for about an hour.
Stir in cream, 2-teaspoon vanilla, and nutmeg and rum.
Refrigerate at least 6 ½ hours before serving.
eggnog, place the mixture in a bowl on top of a large bowl of
ice water and beat rapidly with an electric mixer.
Giving the Gift of Education
By Becky Boston, ChFC, CLU
State Farm® agent
School days can be expensive days. The U.S. Department of Education
says college costs are increasing at an average annual rate of more than
6 percent. And, according to Trends in College Pricing 2006, tuition
and fees for a public college or university average $5,836 per year.
For private colleges and universities, the average tuition and fees have
increased to over $22,000. And, that’s just tuition, not room and board,
books and supplies, and other expenses.
The U.S. Census Bureau shows people with a bachelor’s degree earn
an average of 80 percent more than those with only a high school
diploma. Over a lifetime, the gap in earning potential between a high
school diploma and that of a higher education degree is more than
$1 million. That means if it’s a choice between saving for your child’s
college education and getting that big-screen television, you’d be smart
to start putting money away now.
I speak to people everyday who either have children or love someone
else’s dearly. What better gift can you give than the gift of education?
Most of us want our children’s quality of life to be better than our own
and a Coverdell ESA or 529 Plan can help meet those goals. You don’t
have to be the parent to contribute – grandparents, aunts, uncles, and
friends can contribute on behalf of a child.
Coverdell ESAs were created to provide qualified individuals with a
flexible alternative when saving for the education of a child under the
age of 18. ESAs allow $2,000 annually to be contributed to the account
of each beneficiary.
Some of the benefits of Coverdell ESAs include:
• Any growth of assets in an ESA is tax-deferred and may be distributed federally income
tax and penalty tax free when used for qualified education expenses associated with
elementary, secondary, or higher education.
• Qualified withdrawals may be used to pay for tuition, fees, books, supplies, including
computers, and, in certain circumstances, room and board.
• Assets can be rolled from the account of one beneficiary to an ESA of a qualified family
member.
529 Plans are available to help families and friends save for a loved
one’s future college costs
Some of the benefits of 529 Plans include:
• 529 Plans have higher contribution limits than ESAs, allowing greater amounts to be
invested for education.
• You make after-tax contributions to the account, but you don’t pay taxes as the
account grows.
• As long as withdrawals are used to pay for qualified higher education expenses such
as tuition, books, supplies, fees, and certain room and board, your investment earnings
are received free of federal income tax. 1
The main goal is to establish a savings plan to provide the money needed
to send your child to college. What this boils down to is that whatever
sacrifices you (and the child’s grandparents/friends/etc.) might make
for college today may pay dividends in the long-term.
1 Pursuant to the Economic Growth and Tax Relief Reconciliation Act of 2001, effective Jan. 1, 2002 through Dec. 31, 2010, unless legislation changes.
Earning must be used to pay for qualified higher education expenses to be federally tax free. The earnings portion of a nonqualified withdrawal will be
subject to ordinary income tax at the recipient’s marginal rate and subject to a 10% penalty.
The information presented in this document does not constitute tax advice. State and local tax laws vary. Additionally, your home state may only offer
favorable tax treatment for investing in a 529 plan that your state offers. Please consult your tax advisor for specific information about your tax situation,
including any state tax consequences of the investment.
The State Farm College Savings Plan (the “plan”) is sponsored by the State of Nebraska and administered by the Nebraska State Treasurer. The plan is
established in cooperation with State Farm VP Management Corp. (“State Farm”), A I M Distributors, Inc. and the State of Nebraska pursuant to which State
Farm offers classes of shares in a series of accounts within the Nebraska Educational Savings Plan Trust (the “Trust”) that are managed and distributed by
A I M Capital Management, Inc. (“AIM”) and its affiliates. The Trust offers other accounts that are not affiliated with the plan. State Farm does not provide
investment management services for the plan and the accounts in the plan are not insured or guaranteed by State Farm, AIM, Union Bank and Trust
Company, the Trust, the State of Nebraska, any of their respective affiliates, directors, officers or agents, or any other entity.

Prosper Country Christmas Festival
Information Provided By Karen Gill
THIS YEAR’S PROSPER COUNTRY CHRISTMAS
FESTIVAL IS ON SATURDAY, DECEMBER 8, FROM 6:00 P.M.
UNTIL 8:00 P.M. This year’s festival will feature a Santa parade
that will begin at the intersection of Broadway Street and McKinley
Street at 6:15 pm. The parade will escort Santa to the North Pole,
located on Broadway Street, adjacent to the Town Christmas tree.
The Prosper High School Marching Band and the Talonettes,
among others, will march in the parade.
Do not forget about the horse and carriage ride! The horse
and carriage station is on Main Street, at the Main Street Park.
Prepare for the horses to carry you away for an old fashion ride
around the park. The carriage rides begin at 6:30 pm and will be
enjoyable for the entire family. You might just find the perfect
Christmas gift with the variety of vendors at the festival this year,
so come prepared to do some shopping. There will also be several
dining options, so come hungry! Not all vendors take credit cards
so be prepared. This year several local businesses and festival
vendors have donated items, and there will be random prize
drawings throughout the evening for these wonderful gifts. Make
sure you stop by the table at the stage and fill out an entry form
for the drawings. We are pleased to announce that Nikki Walker,
Miss Teen Texas, will be drawing the winning names. We’ll see you
at Festival!
The Town of Prosper would like to remind everyone attending the festival of a
few important items. Due to the large number of vendors at this year’s event,
there will not be any parking available in the downtown Prosper area. Event
parking will be available at Prosper High School, 300 Eagle Lane. The Town
has contracted four school busses to run continuous shuttle routes between
the High School and the festival. The first shuttle departure is schedule for
5:20 p.m. The shuttle will drop riders off at the corner of Coleman Road and
Broadway Street, at the side parking lot of Maggie’s.
I FORGOT MY PASSWORD!!
(Not a problem – I’ve stored it in KeePass!)
By Claudia Dineen
Directly
behind
Savannah
HOW MANY PASSWORDS DO YOU
HAVE? I just tallied fifteen of the ones that I
use often (daily, weekly or monthly), and there
are more still that I use infrequently, such as
when I order things online from Amazon.com
or valleyvet.com.
How have I been remembering all of these
passwords? Poorly, according to David Finster
of Fortress Computer Services, LLC in Pilot Point.
“But, you’re no different from most of the people
I know and do business with,” he says. “Most
of the time, if I know the names of a person’s
kids, spouse, and their birthday, I can guess
their password.”
If you have trouble remembering the
multitude of passwords that you have to keep
these days, David recommends a free software
tool called KeePass (keepass.info). KeePass
is a password vault. Essentially, it is a secure,
encrypted storage tool for all of the passwords
that you need to use.
After you download the KeePass program
and install it, the first thing you do is set up your
Master Password. This is the one and only
password you will need to remember from now
on. (But beware, David cautions, “KeePass is
940.597.4667
LoneStarCarpetCare.com
Truck Mounted
Steam Cleaning Equipment
extremely secure. If you lose or forget that
password, you are in trouble. There are no
backdoors, and no technical support to “break
in” to your KeePass vault.”) Within KeePass,
you can create folders to organize your login
names and passwords, making retrieval quick
and easy. KeePass also contains a password
generator to randomly generate strong
new passwords.
KeePass is a very small program, and can
be easily loaded to a USB memory stick, your
Blackberry or Palm PDA, or your computer.
Because it is so secure and you certainly don’t
want to lose the passwords that you’ve stored
there, you may want to keep backup copies of
your KeePass vault in several locations.
“Having KeePass enables you to stop using
the same password for your PC that you use
for the ATM, your voice mail and everything
else. You just need to remember your Master
Password to access KeePass, and you’re good
to go!”
There are more tips and additional
information to be found on David’s web site:
Q & A
POSITIVE PLUMBING
FROM CASSY IN CELINA
I would like to add a sink to my utility room. Our
utility room is big enough to accommodate a sink but is
this a difficult and expensive upgrade?
No this is not difficult- you can add a sink to your washer box as long as
you keep the sink on the same wall as your washing machine. The sheetrock
must be cut to the plumbing stack in the wall which is the drain and vent for
your washing machine. Hot and cold water is also located in the wall at the
washing machine box. The plumbing process in the wall should take about 2
hours. The sheetrock repair will usually be done by another contractor. The
mop sink with legs and faucet will cost approximately $80. The plumbing
labor should cost between $500 - $700. The sheetrock repair should run
around $200.
FROM ANGELA IN CROSS ROADS
Who works on ice makers? Is it a small appliance repair person or
a plumber?
If you are having problems with the ice maker itself, I would recommend that
you consult an appliance repair company. A plumber will work on the water
intake and the drain. Most appliances have a manufacturer warranty and
sometimes it is wise to contact the manufacturer of the appliance. If there
is a water problem or drainage issue, then a plumber will be able to repair
the appliance.
LAUNCH SERVICE is March 21, 2008 at 7 pm. Savannah Elementary School.
FROM KRIS IN AUBREY
What are simple and effective items to add to your home to help conserve water?
Most new homes have water saving devices throughout the house. The new
codes and laws require plumbers to install low flow toilets, faucets, shower
heads, etc. If your home is an older home, the first thing you need to do is
replace the toilets to the new 1.6 gallon flush tanks, change all shower heads to
the new low flow shower heads and check the age of your faucets to see if they
need to be replaced as well. Another effective water conservation is to verify
that your toilets are not leaking. Many times your toilets might be leaking
and you will not even hear it. This process is a simple process by checking
your water meter for movement. Sprinkler systems are another major source
of water usuage and should be tested annually.
FROM STEPHANIE IN PILOT POINT
Can you explain the tankless water system to me and can it be added to an
older home?
The Rinnai tankless water heater is a more efficient way to heat water. It
heats water quickly and delivers an endless supply of hot water as long as
you need it. With the Rinnai tankless, you only pay for the hot water that
you use not for the hot water that you do not use. Tankless water heaters are
up to 50% more energy efficient than the traditional water heater and a gas
tankless water heater is up to 70% more efficient that an electric water heater
(Information provided by www.foreverhotwater.com).
Yes - a tankless water can be added to an older home.
Just recently, we removed a standard 50 gallon natural
gas water heater in the attic and installed a tankless
water heater in an older home. With the replacement
of the water heater vent and redoing the gas line, it cost
the homeowner about $3,200. You must understand
that with a tankless water heater, you have to replace
the water heater vent pipe and make sure that the gas
line is large enough to handle the new water heater. We
have installed new tankless water heaters for as little as
$2,600. Every situation is different and needs a visual
inspection to see what it will cost to do the job.
