letter from the publisherThe economy seems to be looking upagain. While I expect it to be a gradualincline, up at any pace is good. Morebusinesses are starting to open and the dirt inthe corridor is starting to move. Just recentlywe have enjoyed the convenience of thenew 7-Eleven and Sherwin Williams. Kid’sCorral opened their second location andAubrey’s new Post Office has opened theirdoors. Neighborhoods are starting to buildmore homes and once more we are seeingnew neighbors moving into the corridor.Several of the corridor cities have reported more building permitsover the past few months. With any luck, the final quarter of 2009may be fruitful for many of us. It has just been a challenge hangingin there for so many and it is disheartening to see area businessesclose their doors and homes in foreclosure. As the financial pressurestarts to lift, we hope you keep your local businesses in mind. Thereare so many wonderful conveniences that are gradually comingto the corridor and from our understanding we have several newbusinesses that will start breaking ground soon. This along with thenew toll bridge should bring some added conveniences to the area. With progress comes growing pains such as traffic. Some ofthe roads are already struggling to keep up with the number of carscoming to the area. My wife has reminded me that with more trafficcomes more danger. There have been several accidents on HWY 380that have caused injuries and fatalities. In June, we lost two membersof a young family in our neighborhood. Piper Gray, the infant girlthat survived the fatal crash at HWY 380 and the tollway last Junestill has a long recovery ahead of her. We have had several of ourreaders inquire about baby Piper’s status. We are happy to reportthat she is now at her home and surrounded by her family. While shestill has a challenging recovery ahead of her, she is out of immediatedanger. If you would like to make a donation to her fund you canmake one at any Bank of America location to the Piper Gray Fund.We are sure the family would appreciate any donation you can make.October/November 2009contents24 3022 Saving Money is Not AboutmathMaking it a Priority24 Speedway Children’s CharitiesBenefiting Children in North Texas26 Ask John the Plumber28 Treading the BoardroomVolunteers Oversee the Overall Health ofDCT30 Take It With You!Around the World and Across theCountryWinner of 2009 PIA Mid America Graphics Excellence AwardPrivate Medicare RoomsPhysical, Speech & Occupational Therapy • 24 Hour Skilled Nursing • Restorative Nursing • Wound Care • Hospice/Respite Care4 www.380Guide.comThe Highest Rated Facility in Denton 44 Months in a Row!

NASCAR Scene RanksNASCAR Scene magazine has ranked TexasMotor Speedway the best in both facilities andsurroundings out of the 10 Chase tracks in its recentsupplement issue highlighting the Chase for the SprintCup. Texas Motor Speedway ranked third overall – trailingjust top-ranked Talladega Superspeedway and fellow SMI trackLowe’s Motor Speedway – on the strength of its top rankings in thosetwo categories as well as a No. 3 ranking for ambience. The othercategories were history and competition, where Texas Motor Speedwayranked fifth and seventh, respectively.NASCAR Scene applauded Speedway Motorsports, Inc. for building“one of international racing’s best speedways” near cities and townsthat produce “some of the country’s best music,” “big steaks,” and“big-city night life.”“I don’t care what you say, race teams can feel the enthusiasm,”NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver/owner Michael Waltrip toldNASCAR Scene. “You have to feed off that electricity, and that’s oneof the places you go to that there’s a vibe in the air that makes youwant to win a little more. It’s the perfect place for a Chase race. It’sbecoming one of those special places.”While the competition category may have been the speedway’s lowestmark, it remains a track feared by many drivers, including NASCAR’selite.“We feared Texas for a long time when the Chase first got started,”three-time defending Sprint Cup Series champion and 2007 Dickies500 winner Jimmie Johnson told Scene. “It’s a very demanding track. The entries and exits to the turns are unlike any other we go to. It’sreally tight with pretty abrupt transitions. Bringing the latest technologyand the best in customer service! Hurry! Call now to order1-888-822-5151Saving Money Is Not About51Math 8It’s no secret that Americans are not big savers. In other culturessaving money is part of their DNA. Until the recent economiccrisis, Americans actually had a negative savings rate. What changedthat made us start saving more. The emotion of fear. Fear of theunknown.Statistics show you will not save money when you get a raise. I knowthat hasn’t happened in a couple of years. You won’t save when youget a car paid off and you won’t save money when the kids are grownand out of the house. You will only save money when it becomes anemotional priority. We all know that we need to save but we don’t save like we should. Why? Because of competing goals that we have. The goal to save isn’ta high enough priority to delay the purchase of that Blueray DVDplayer, that new sofa, vacation or even a pizza, so we purchase stuffand consume every dollar that we make. Worse yet, we go into debtto buy things. Then I hear people say “We just don’t make enoughto save any money”. Actually you do make enough to save. You justhaven’t made the choice to make saving a priority. It doesn’t matterhow much you make. You can save money. What is the secret to saving money? Focused emotion. If a doctortold you your child was dying and could only be saved with a $10,000operation that you insurance would not cover and could only beperformed 9 months from today, you think you could save the money?Absolutely you could and would. No a credit card is not an option. You would sell things, stop spending money on things that are notrequired and would take two extra jobs. For that 9 months you wouldbecome a saving machine. You would give up virtually anything toaccomplish that $10,000 goal. Saving would be a priority.Getting a little healthy anger or fear then focusing that emotion onyour personal decisions will make saving a priority. Harnessing thatemotion will make you move yourself to the top of the creditor list andpay yourself first. The advertising and marketing are affecting our emotions every dayand are taking every dollar we have by making us see our wants asneeds. It is time to stop this. Emotions make great slaves, but they arelousy masters. No matter how educated or sophisticated we are, if weare not saving all we should be, we are being ruled by emotions, notharnessing them as financial planning slaves. So whether you are saving for college tuition, a trip to the familyreunion, new school clothes for little Johnny or Susie, or anything else.Start saving now. You can do this. It is never too late!!!Brad Cason - Cross Focus Financial Coachingwww.crossfocusfinancialcoaching.comsuddenlyMoreInternet cablePhone DVr hDtV securIty

This usually occurswhen you are on a well system. You can either replace the anode rod with a high density anoderod or you can have the tank bleached which will kill thebacteria in the water.FlowersforAll OccasionsRecycle your vases or baskets!!Bring in any combination of 3 vases or basketsand receive free flowers!972.292.0404 • www.marygs.comWe are located in the Little Elm Towne Crossing Shopping Center@ FM 423 & Eldorado Pkwy (behind McDonalds).26 www.380Guide.com

Treadingthe Board RoomTBy Kyla Welchreading the boards” has long been an expression that refersto acting on a stage. The term seems to have originated inmedieval times when traveling troupes of actors placed a temporaryplatform on the village green for performances. Now, non-profittheatres, like Denton Community Theatre (DCT), not only requireactors and a few wooden planks, but also a Board of Directors. TheGoverning Board at DCT is comprised of a variety of business peopleand community leaders who volunteer their time, and expertise tooversee the overall health and growth of the organization. The myriadtasks they perform behind the scenes insures DCT’s compliancewith legal regulations, financial security, and adherence to theorganizations mission statement and goals.Updating bylaws, restructuring personnel policy, examining budgets, organizing gala evenings, and selling program advertisements are buta few of the thankless tasks that must be tended to in order for a nonprofitorganization to run smoothly. For the past several years, DCThas been extremely fortunate to have a stellar group of individualswho are willing to serve. During the annual membership meetingon August 28, it was announced that for the first time in severalyears DCT is entering a season with no outstanding debt. AlthoughManaging Director, Mike Barrow, is directly responsible for the day today operations, he is quick to point out that he would be hard pressedto succeed in this without a strong board. The 2009-2010 season heralds new officers for the Board including anew president, Donna Trammell, as well as brand new Board membersDavid Gosdin and Virgil Strange. Governing Board terms are twoyears and members may serve three terms. Outgoing president, GeorgeHighfill, will serve another two years to help with the transition. The year will be an exciting one. Along with the regular season ofshows, special events, outreach programs and theatre school, DCT hasbegun work on an annex that will provide much-needed rehearsal, classroom and storage space. The lion’s share of work, from reviewingthe architect’s plan to choosing the plumbing fixtures, will fall to theGoverning Board.Past-President George HighfillBoard President Donna Trammell with the 2008-2009 Volunteer of the Year, Liz SiebtSo, if anyone thought thatall the hard work was “onthe boards” at the theatre, let’s give a standingovation for DonnaTrammell, Pat Sherman,Doreen Collin, LindsayKeffer, Perry McNeil, PatHeath, Cila Lewis, JoeAlford, Cindy Lee, CarolPhillips, George Highfill,Alex Payne, Jeff Springer,Carol Alexander, PhilGallivan, Dick Williams, and the many others whohave served, or will serve,so that the art of theatrecan continue to thriveat Denton CommunityTheatre.28 www.380Guide.comPresident-Elect, Pat ShermanSPECIALIZING INCommercial & Residential• Plumbing Repairs• Drain Cleaning• Hydro-jetting• Water Heaters• Slab Leaks• Video InspectionsTravis Johnson Master Plumber940-365-0025www.trueintegrityplumbing.com24 HourServiceM37580
