Atlantic waters To accomplish her new role<br />
(he 4,500 ton SEEADLER was armed with<br />
two lOSmm guns, which could he hidden<br />
from approaching ships. She earned a crew<br />
<strong>of</strong> M <strong>of</strong>ficers <strong>and</strong> men <strong>and</strong> was powered by<br />
an auxiliary diesel for 9 knots. Her three tall<br />
masts earned 21 sails.<br />
At the close <strong>of</strong> 1916 SEEADLER sailed<br />
from the Atlantic with Felix. Graf von<br />
Luckner in comm<strong>and</strong>. On 25 December the<br />
ship was stopped <strong>and</strong> searched by the British<br />
auxiliary PATIA. but allowed to continue.<br />
SEEADLER proceeded south to Brazil,<br />
sinking two merchantmen enroutc. During<br />
the next eight weeks the raider took nine<br />
ships <strong>and</strong> accepted many prisoners. Using a<br />
captured French barque, von Luckner rid<br />
himself <strong>of</strong> the unwanted crews, who made<br />
their way to Brazil.<br />
On 19 April, 1917 SEEADLER sailed<br />
around Cape Horn, to begin cruising along<br />
the coast <strong>of</strong> Chile to latitude 35 degrees<br />
south. Subsequently the raider made for the<br />
north-west, crossing the equator in June.<br />
During both June <strong>and</strong> <strong>Jul</strong>y she captured<br />
three American inter-isl<strong>and</strong> trading vessels.<br />
Crew health, fiad by now become critical.<br />
Little or no fresh provisions remained <strong>and</strong><br />
some <strong>of</strong> the crew were suffering from<br />
scurvy. Von Luckner headed towards the<br />
Society Isl<strong>and</strong>s for some rest from raider<br />
activities, a period during which<br />
SEEADLER have captured or sunk 16 ships,<br />
totalling 30.100 gross ions.<br />
However, after a few days at the isl<strong>and</strong><br />
the ship was struck by a slonn jnd grounded<br />
on the isl<strong>and</strong>'s reef. SEEADLERS crew<br />
took to the ships' boats <strong>and</strong> headed for an<br />
adjacent isl<strong>and</strong>. Later they comm<strong>and</strong>eered<br />
an isl<strong>and</strong> schooner, but despite their best<br />
efforts all personnel were finally captured,<br />
being interned for the remainder <strong>of</strong> the war.<br />
