Basically there is no great difference between the different youth hostels. Usually you share a<br />

room with other persons. Some <strong>of</strong> them also <strong>of</strong>fer breakfast. A number <strong>of</strong> addresses are listed<br />

in the appendix under “IYHA Hostels, Independent Hostels, Student and Youth Hotels”.<br />

IYHA hostels<br />

Short-term accommodation, for example for the time you are looking for private<br />

accommodation, is available at several <strong>Berlin</strong> youth-hostels. Enquiry’s can be directed to the<br />

<strong>Berlin</strong> head <strong>of</strong>fice. Please note that you will need an International Youth Hostel<br />

Membership card to stay at a youth hostel. Current rates at youth hostels are around 20 €<br />

per night per person.<br />

In the appendix to this <strong>GPE</strong> guide you will also find a list <strong>of</strong> independent hostels which do not<br />

require membership <strong>of</strong> their guests.<br />

A hint: If you wish to stay in a private accommodation, it is <strong>of</strong>ten necessary for students to<br />

have pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> sufficient financial support.<br />

Just in case you do not find satisfactory housing before you leave for <strong>Berlin</strong>, or enjoy taking<br />

risks and come here without making living arrangements, we have a small collection <strong>of</strong> private<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers <strong>of</strong> accommodation here in the international <strong>of</strong>fice (AAA) in room H 51 (main building <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>TU</strong>B).<br />

4.3 Transfer <strong>of</strong> Health Insurance<br />

If you want to study in Germany, you must register with a German health insurance company<br />

(see Chapter Preparation upon arrival). In many cases, this registration is free, if you can<br />

show certain documents:<br />
