We will provide you a personal contact with Techniker Krankenkasse, after your arrival in
Berlin. Other accredited Krankenkassen are, AOK (Allgemeine Orts-Krankenkasse), the DAK
(Deutsche Angestellten-Krankenkasse), the BK (Barmer Ersatzkasse) or the KKH
(Kaufmännische Krankenkasse). Their services do normally not differ substantially and the
fees for students are the same.
Certificate of the private health insurance
Students who have their health insurance with private companies obtain an exemption from
the compulsory German health insurance through any accredited Krankenkasse. However,
once you have been exempted from the compulsory German health insurance, you can never
be insured by the German state as long as you remain a student. For students who want to
insure themselves in Germany some day, e.g. because they decide to spend their lives here,
it may make sense to register health insurance by an accredited Krankenkasse or they will
have to keep on using private (and the older you are) more expensive companies.
With the AOK you will receive the exemption the same day you provide the certificate. Others
might take a few days, but other public health insurance institutions are accepted, too.
Exchange students who have no insurance or have insurance from their home countries not
recognized in Germany must take a German health insurance for students. (For information
contact for example the TK. See addresses above.) At the TUB in the Studentisches
Koordinationsbüro or at one of the Krankenkassen you can obtain this insurance for a monthly
premium of approx. 65 € at present.
Please note, that you have to pay 10 € if you go to a doctor for the first time in a quarter of a
year. (1. quarter: January to March; 2. quarter April to June; 3. quarter July to September, 4.
quarter October to December). If you need to consult a second doctor the first one where you
have paid gives you a transfer document with which you go to the next doctor with a different
specialization.
